The woman known to history as Wallis Simpson was born Bessewallis Warfield, in Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania, around the 19th of June 1896, however, the exact date of her birth is somewhat unclear, as there is no birth certificate for Simpson, and there are no contemporary records of her birth in newspapers. Her father was Teackle Wallis Warfield and her mother was Alice Montague, the name they gave their daughter was an amalgamation of the name of her aunt Bessie, and her grandfather’s friend Severn Teackle Wallis, this was soon abandoned however as, in her words, it was ‘only fit for a cow’; she preferred Wallis  for its androgenous character,  and its distinctiveness.
