a native american archaeological discovery when fixing the front porch hi everyone amanda hughes here for family tree nuts and i'm on the banks of the beaufort river on the present-day naval hospital compound and so what was this archaeological discovery that i'm referring to well it was that of a trash pit a shell midden was found here when they were doing refurbishment on the commanding officer's front porch area in archaeological terms a shell midden or midden is a mound or deposit containing shells animal bones or other refuse and that it indicates the site of a human settlement the consistency and form of this particular midden led archaeologists to believe that the area was used as a site to preserve the oyster catch of the local native american tribe most likely this area was used seasonally by the eska makuu or the wimby tribes who were a nomadic people group in the south carolina low country their villages were more inland so the site here on the bluff was just a temporary gat
