For example, when I drive by my favorite liquor store I purposely press on the gas pedal and distract myself so I don't stop in. When I go out at night to pick up my son from work I take my teenage daughter with me so I can't stop at the liquor store. I purposely don't travel with money on short trips. I buy my favorite drink ( clamato ) and have hot spicy virgin caesars at night. I also have a few non alcoholic beers at my disposal for when I just need the taste of beer. I can fool myself into thinking I'm enjoying a nice cold alcoholic beer, and it helps with the cravings to drink.  Don't be afraid to confide in family and friends about what you are trying to accomplish - you will soon figure out who your real friends are when you quit drinking. Humility is important! The real ones will support you and help you stay sober. Again, sobering up long term is a one on one battle with yourself but it's one you can WIN. It does take determination and an attitude change ( you have to WANT to live ) and it will get boring as you stare at yourself sober and can't figure out what to do with yourself. Seriously, think about a gym membership or your local YMCA you can afford it now you aren't drinking It will be rewarding. And again - try not to think of not drinking as a whole big challenge, break it down into smaller, easy to achieve decisions. I always thought "I'll never quit drinking!" as it seemed like an insurmountable problem taken as a whole. However, it's really EASY to just drive PAST the liquor store!
