Raising my four sons as a single parent unfortunately I was often too stressed and too tired working two full time jobs at times and then going to college to become an RN to provide more financial security for the future to do this as well as I had hope. It is very difficult being a single parent, and my first 3 sons had their father in their life, but I cannot say in many ways he was a positive role model, he did not have the moral character I would have preferred he led and taught our sons, and in his being the good time father soon they stopped listening to me and the values I had hoped they would embrace, my failure to consistently live the values I said I embraced led them to lose faith in me and caused confusion for them. I cannot stress enough how important it is for a parent to model in their own lives what they are hoping to instill in the lives of their children.My youngest son and I were deserted when I was pregnant and while I tried to provide role models through the church too often men today do not do this well in their own homes much less take another child under their wing, and I had no family support systems in place. So for the most part I had to play both roles and then when he was 8 I remarried and that was a big mistake in many ways as this person was not a good role model, oh he tried but his own issues and age got in the way and my son grew up resenting me and still does to this day.So in my own failed attempts as a single mother my advise may not be helpful but I have learned a great deal in retrospect of my own failures as a single parent.God never intended one parent to be both parents, and trying to do so since this is not natural and you do not have the necessary ways of thinking to provide the other parent most often you will get it wrong.It is well known that the most influential parent in a child’s life is the same sex parent. So for girls that is their mother and for boys their father. So when this is missing in a child’s life either by being absent or a poor role model the child grows up ill equipped to be fully developed and healthy emotionally, and spiritually no matter how hard the one parent tries.Seek through your church or Boys and Girls clubs or Big Brother or Big sisters when no family can or is meeting this need to find your child a healthy adult of the same gender to mentor your child and provide the point of view that you are not equipped to provide.Take care of yourself and stay in your lane and seek to be the best Mom or Dad you can be, and don’t be afraid to share with your child that as much as you want to and will do your best that in some areas you may fail them.Don’t beat yourself up or take your feelings of inadequacy out on your child.Do your best to be healthy yourself spiritually, emotionally and physically so the role you do play will be an effective and good one.Being a single parent places a great deal of stress on that parent and unless you live it this is not well understood especially by your children so do your best to keep the lines of communication open.Seek counseling for yourself and/or your child when you feel like you are running into directions you are not confident you can deal with well and in the best interest of your child.Keep their needs first and foremost and always consider carefully the decisions you are making and how they will impact your child’s life now and in the future.Seek support for yourself through your faith in God and develop a strong and healthy support system with one or two people who can advise and help as needed that you trust and know are living in wisdom themselves to hold up warning signs if you feel lost.I did not have the knowledge or resources that are available today, and I don’t say this as an excuse as my failures are mine to accept, however, I say this as today there are so many more resources available to the single parent in groups, online information and resources and in churches, offering so much more in a day that being a single parent does not have the stigma it did when I was raising mine, thus even if you had the wisdom to seek help it was much more difficult and unavailable in most cases to find.
