Second question is; ownership for what purpose?The two methods of protecting intellectual property (IP) in most countries, including the U.S., is either a patent or a copyright. The difference is based on the medium of the new product.However, you cannot “patent” an idea (What can be patented? , Can you patent a math formula?) which leaves copyright. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem you can copyright a mathematical formula either (5 Things You Can't Copyright ) … although perhaps there are exceptions.Do you simply wish to be recognized as the discoverer of the formula? In that case, simply getting it published in a recognized paper seems all that is necessary. Once it is recognized in a public space, under your name…assuming no other has already published … then you can claim reasonably to be the originator.If you wish to somehow monetize the formula, I have no idea how you could “legally” prevent people from using the idea (based on the above patent and copyright limitations). Even if you could, the burden falls to you to seek out infractions (I.e. you have to find the people illegally making money from your idea, prove they are using your exact formula - and not a legal derivative - sue them, get a judgement, and then force them to cough up the money).SO…If your goal is to monetize the formula, then your best bet is to be quiet, find a company who can profit from the formula, and make a deal with them. Of course you have to study that before the interview. Take as long time as you need if you feel rusty. It takes some time to get ready for the host matching (it's less than the technical interview)  but it's worth it of course.
