What's a better city to live and work in, Arlington, Texas or Charlotte, North Carolina?
I’m a Texan that has called Charlotte home for the last two years after living in Dallas and Austin for nearly 15 years. Charlotte has certainly grown on me and I can say that I really enjoy living here. However, I am looking forward to going back to the Lone Star state in the near future for a couple of reasons. Here’s a quick, surface-level, and unintentionally biased breakdown of some differences between the two.Taxes - The taxes in NC were a shock. I mistakenly assumed that other states are free of the state income tax like Texas - obviously not the case. It’s also more expensive to register vehicles here because of an annual highway usage tax. I imagine it balances out in the end if you do an in-depth comparison between the two states, but seeing the deduction on each paycheck and shelling out a small fortune for registration is tough.Business Environment and Economy - Texas received a higher ranking in terms of economy than North Carolina, which takes into consideration business environment, employment, and job growth among other factors. Generally speaking, Texas has a solid, stable economy and is less affected by economic downturns than most other states. Charlotte seems to have a lot of opportunity in the healthcare sector, though the dominant industry remains finance.Weather - Surprisingly, the weather is comparable. Charlotte has a few more winter days and Texas has more summer-like days, but there’s not really a difference in my opinion. Both places see a day or two of snow and temperatures over 100 degrees.Culture - In my opinion, Texas residents are more friendly and the Mexican food is leaps and bounds better, without question. There’s also more state pride down south and at times it can be overwhelming and/or obnoxious. Texans don’t know a stranger - everyone is welcome. Sports teams are better, the speed limits are faster, and the stars shine a little brighter.Charlotte seems to be split between two groups - one that wants the city to grow and invest in infrastructure, research, etc. and one that wants the city to remain exactly as it is. It’s an interesting contrast that leads to tension, especially around housing and education. I would argue that Charlotte is the least progressive place I’ve lived. Additionally, the infrastructure was not built to support the current population level and it gets worse every month. There are projects underway to help alleviate the issue, but it’s too little too late. Less important though a complaint of mine - the speed limits are ridiculously slow. Toll roads in Texas post speed limits of 75–85 MPH, so 55 seems like a crawl.I might be hard on Charlotte, but both places really do have a lot to offer. Good luck!

How does Dallas County in Texas compared to New York City?
I’m from Dallas and I love NYC - I’ve never lived there but I’ll do my best to answer your question. I do have a lot of family in New Jersey, so I am familiar with many of the cultural differences.I think that there are a ton of differences between NYC and Dallas - most created by urban sprawl and lack of proximity. The Dallas-Ft. Worth area is very spread out, and in many cases residential areas are far from business centers and places for going out. This is changing somewhat and there are more places to live available near the city center. I might go for that option if I were you. Plano is a great place to raise a family but a kind of boring place to be a single young guy.Commutes in Texas tend to be long, and you will certainly need a car. Cost of living overall is much lower, so that will help make up for the expense of the car.People often ask me about racism and backwards attitudes in Texas - Dallas is an international city and no more racist than any other major city center. There is a lot of religious and ethnic diversity, and Dallas County is a Democratic area., though Collin County (where Plano is) is Republican. There is a gay part of Dallas (Oak Lawn, though that may have changed), and lots of gay clubs and other organization. That said, it’s not nearly as progressive as NYC, where it sometimes seems that most anything goes.Dallas has many cultural and fine dining options (including good deli food), and almost world-class museums. It’s very hot much of the year but there are good parks. Remember that although Dallas has a huge airport, it’s very far from everywhere - the beach and the East and West coasts, so there aren’t many opportunities for fun weekend trips and travel can be a pain.It makes me kind of sad to admit this, but I think Dallas’ most distinguishing characteristic is extreme materialism and class-consciousness. I have lived in several other places and no where else was there such an all consuming obsession with shopping, luxury cars and other class markers. You said that you’re a male, but you should still know that Dallas women take their appearance and grooming very seriously, and many seem to aspire to marry wealthy men and “retire into marriage.”

Is Texarkana, Texas, as dangerous as crime statistics make the city out to be?
No, not at all. In fact it is the first city in America to have not old fashioned Guardian Angels but Guardian Pentecostals! These able Christians are taught self defense at an early age. Their chant “Fight, fight, fight, cause we know we’re frigging right!.” has become this fair cities anthem. Crime has been reduced by two thirds. Some crime is kept around so these long skirted guys and gals have something to fight. But this city no longer dreads sundown! That’s for sure.

Do all narcissists up and leave to another area, town, city, etc., after being found out? My narcissist moved from South Texas to North Texas, like a thief in the night.
No but we lived in his appartment. Me and our newborn had to move to my mom’s 100 miles away. His ex wife does live in the same town so they have joint custody over his other three kids. She is a total grey rock though amd it’s been driving him nuts for 10 years since their divorce. I was told she’s a bitch though and in two years I lived there and helped him take care of his kids, I’ve never met her.

In San Antonio, Texas, how, why and when did the northeastern quadrant of the city emerge as the unofficial "Jewish part of town"?
This is not the case in San Antonio. The "Jewish" part of town is Castle Hills and the area north of it. The neighborhoods of San Antonio have changed over the years, of course, with Hemisfair '68. Many ethnic neighborhoods just disappeared or moved to other parts of town. Both the Italians and, oddly enough, the Jewish people relocated on their own to the north central area of town, bisected by Loop 410. As time has passed, a new synagogue moved further out Military Highway to be followed by a population from other parts more north west (Agudis Achim -sp?) closed its doors and people moved closer to the new, modern area, Shavano Park. A chain grocery store that specialize in kosher foods has opened in the last two years, and the entire community is quite vibrant.

Is it okay to have a regular Texas accent while being born and raised in the city of Houston, Texas?
Not everyone who lives in Texas has a Texan accent or a Southern drawl. I’ve lived in Houston for most of my life and have heard all types of accents. It isn’t unusual to hear a Texan accent or Southern drawl. No one makes fun of you, if they do, they are morons. How are you to judge someone just by the way they speak?
