I already had a poor opinion of the jury and court system before I was ever summoned. My experience merely confirmed it.Trial by jury is an anachronism, and in an age where jurors have to send to the judge to ask what a Senator is, it is dangerous. It was a necessary remedy 750 years ago, when Henry II sent royal justices from shire to shire to try cases on the Crown’s behalf. Knowing nothing of local circumstances, the justices had a panel of local men swear to the truth of a matter. Of course it was an improvement over trial by ordeal or combat.Many matters today are simply too complex for reasonable decisions to be rendered by anyone except experts. To think that I might find myself at risk of being deprived of life, liberty, or property by the sort of person who voted for our current President is intolerable.Around 1976, I read Louis Nizer’s My Life in Court. Nizer argued for the plaintiff in a civil case in which a professional had been egregiously negligent. Any reasonable verdict ought to have included enormous damages. In his summation, Nizer said the defendant’s indifference to his professional duty had been little short of criminal.When the verdict was read, the jury found for the plaintiff but, to Nizer’s astonishment, awarded an insultingly trivial sum. This judge seemed intent on badgering everyone, of any background or persuasion, to acknowledging that they could be objective in judging any case. He made a show of asking for people’s opinions but then simply ignored them. For instance, the case to be cried was a gun crime (but not a violent one), and I told him that my cousin’s two children had been shot to death by their stepfather just a few years before, and the judge still said “But you can be objective in this matter, yes?” I suspect many people answered “Yes” for fear that if they answered otherwise, they would be held in contempt, perhaps even jailed.One poor woman even spoke up and said she had Crohn’s disease, which would make her bathroom needs urgent and immediate, and the judge still said he thought it best if she would serve. I found his forcing her to admit such a thing publicly, disgusting.Despite the judge, the attorneys found ample reason to challenge me, and I was dismissed.I believe cases should be tried before mature, well-informed people of sound judgement and sufficient knowledge to evaluate the evidence. To think that such a group is likely to be discovered in today’s United States by the present jury selection system is simply laughable.

As many of you know, the process of acquiring a student visa (F-1 visa) to the United States is nerve-racking for Indian families. Having gone through four years of college, graduating with a good GPA along with multiple summer research stints/internships, then applying to several US universities at considerable expense, and finally being rewarded with an acceptance letter from a respected school, Indian students are sometimes rejected from entering the US at the final hurdle—the visa interview at the US embassy.I recall the buildup to my interview four years ago. Many of my friends had theirs scheduled before mine, and they scared the bejeezus out of me recounting their horror show interviews involving scores of questions from grim interviewers with piercing glares boring into their souls trying to catch out any hesitation in their answers, any possible untruths.My parents did what any self-respecting Indian family does before their kid heads to an interview—they took me to a temple. And not just any temple—they took me about 1000 kilometers north of home to the searingly hot city of Baroda, Gujarat, to visit one particular Hanumanji temple (apparently this was our family God in our family temple, goodness knows why, we’re Tamils from Chennai—and I’m an atheist!)So after much prayer and puja, blessings from family members and well-wishes from friends, I stood outside the US embassy on a cloudy, muggy, summer day, shitting my pants under the narrow canopy that automatically opened over the street when it rained (a nice touch there, ‘Murica).My stomach churned as the line slowly moved forward. Oh man, I always love it when a GOP politician says that they will “simplify the tax code by reducing the number of tax brackets”. This is easily my favorite economic proposal because it’s so demonstrably useless. Do GOP politicians think that the difficult thing about taxes is calculating the amount of money one makes in each bracket. I think the majority of people just use a computer program to calculate this for them these days, but even the people who fill out the paper forms just need to look up a number at the end. One doesn’t calculate the amount of money you owe in each bracket, one simply calculates one’s taxable income and then looks up a number in the back of the packet. The bottom line is that this proposal does nothing, NOTHING, to simplify taxes for anyone, but it will make taxes more regressive.Now, the above is not the biggest lie in this speech, it’s just the one that tickles my fancy a lot because it’s a lie that even the slightest bit of thought will cut through. It’s the kind of weakly thought-out, arrogant lie that one tells to people one has no respect for.The rest of the speech is pretty much the greatest hits of the GOP: “slash taxes”, “gut regulations”, “get rid of Obamacare”, and of course “I’m rich so clearly I know how to fix the economy…because those two things are the same somehow.” There were plenty of distorted statistics and outright lies used to prop up these cases, but we’ve been there before, and the case for these policies is extremely weak. Elizabeth Warren said it best in one of her tweets about the speech: was the problem of 2008 too many regulations, or too few?Overall, I barely feel the need to refute the above points. They’re all very tired and have been exhaustively debunked. Gutting taxes simply won’t generate nearly enough to demand to make up the deficit, so it’s either run up debt levels that make the last 16 years look tame, or pretty much destroy discretionary spending (the latter is what republicans want, though it’s never going to be politically feasible). Similarly, gutting regulations won’t release some magical growth-creation monster…regulations just aren’t nearly as onerous as republicans imagine them to be (and those that are onerous are onerous for a good reason).Trump is trying to pretend he can be a good conservative, and it’s not working too well.

I was selected for a summer internship 2016.I tried to be very open while filling the preference form: I choose many products as my favorite products and I said I'm open about the team I want to join.I even was very open in the  location and start date to get host matching interviews (I negotiated the start date in the interview until both me and my host were happy.) You could ask your recruiter to review your form (there are very cool and could help you a lot since they have a bigger experience).Do a search on the potential team.Before the interviews,  try to find smart question that you are going to ask for the potential host (do a search on the team  to find nice and deep questions to impress your host). Prepare well your resume.You are very likely not going to get algorithm/data structure questions like in the first round. It's going to be just some friendly chat if you are lucky. If your potential team is working on something like machine learning, expect that  they are going to ask you questions about machine learning, courses related to machine learning you have and relevant experience (projects, internship). Of course you have to study that before the interview. Take as long time as you need if you feel rusty. It takes some time to get ready for the host matching (it's less than the technical interview)  but it's worth it of course.
