How do illegal immigrants live in the US successfully for 20 years, including getting a driving license, get a job, pay taxes, and buy a house?
I live in Arizona and have seen a lot of this go down over the last couple decades. It boils down to numerous businesses, both small and large who are willing to capitalize on a cheap, extremely hard working labor force (legal status be damned). There are very few white people in this state who work as laborers in landscaping, roofing, concrete, tree trimming, house painting, dish washing, car washing, house cleaning, and crop harvesting. The white people run the companies. Or are the foremen or managers. But almost every person busting thier ass at the physical work is from Mexico and many speak little if any English. They are getting paid under the table, or they are using stolen identites for tax purposes (a decade ago a friend of mine's brother was sent a letter from the IRS claiming he was several years and thousands of dollars behind on taxes, his brother was 13 at the time). These immigrant workers are also doing the job for less than a legal citizen would take, sometimes less than minimum wage. This saves the companies money, and law enforcement did little to crack down on the employers. And since the businesses were making money on the cheap labor, they didn't want the cops to end the gravy train either.A cottage industry of slum lords were more than willing to take rent money from these immigrants for houses and apartments, and if you sell a car in a private transaction there is no legal requirement to verify the legal status of the buyer. Sure they are supposed to register and insure it, but that only matters if they get pulled over, and the smart ones register it under a family memeber who is a citizen or has a green card. Now that you have an immigrant population with money to spend, entrepreneurial people who speak the same language will start local businesses to cater to the needs of these folks who might be shy to spend their money in a store where they have trouble communicating. And all this feeds back into and perpetuates the cycle. So the short answer is: money!

What were some “red flags” new hires shouldn't ignore when starting a new job?
Let’s discuss 10 red flags to watch for within the first 3 months of your job. 3 months gives you ample time to find. My credentials for this answer: 20+ years in the corporate America cube farm. Fortune 500, mid-level, and start-ups. Ready…Let’s go get it.Has your job, in the first few weeks, suddenly morphed into something different from the job role on your employment contract? And, if you call management out on it, and they use silly phrases like not “being flexible”. Congratulations, you’ve found your first red flagAside: If you learn nothing else from this post, read this: “Flexible” and “Team Player” mean do more work, but not get paid for it. Learn this quickly. Because the most important thing every morning is waking up, looking in the mirror, and being able to respect yourself. If you work in a job as a “doer”, such as developer, builder of things, etc., do you find yourself booked up in many meetings? Then congratulations, you’ve discovered a red flag. “Doers” should not be in too many meetings. Because gasp…they need time to actually do stuff. If management cannot squash this early so you can do what you do best, you’ve found yourself at a mismanaged company. In the first few weeks of joining a company, do you notice lots of “cliques” and keep running into “unexpected, unspoken rules?” If so, you’ve dug up another red flag.I remember working at a company years back, doing development. In my interview, I was crystal clear…”I don’t like filling out a lot of paperwork to push code. I just want to code, test quickly, and push it out there.” Alas, 3 weeks after getting hired, management “revealed” that every code push needs a 3 page document filled out, a web form filled out, 3 layers of approval, just to get a change in. It’s ridiculous. The more red tape, the bigger the red flag.Does your company push “social-time” off hours and unnecessary get-togethers? Do they push, and I mean push charities, social justice groups, and other hootenanny garbage? Congratulations, you’ve found another red flag. Nowhere in any standard employment contract anywhere, does it state you must be active with charity, social justice causes, and any of that other garbage. Nor should it, because none of that has one iota to do with your job and the company making money. Not one iota. So if it’s pushed on you, run for the hills.Does your company value “in-office” time more than they do accomplishments during your work hours? If so, you’ve found another archaic, and detrimental red-flag. If I get 8 hours of work done in 2 hours, then what I do after that shouldn’t matter. Because, it’s not like corporate will pay you more for additional effort. Great bosses will let you leave early and give flex time when you pump out work quickly.Do scheduled meetings always run over time, or start late, or both? Congratulations, you’ve found another red-flag. Time wasters. Also, meetings, especially corporate meetings, are notorious for posturing and politics. And if you aren't a fan of meetings like me, then this is a HUGE red flag. Meetings should have an agenda, allow no rambling, and get to the point quick. As in, who is doing what, who needs help, and when can we expect things to get done. That’s it. No more. Are you having a hard time finding a document about annual raises and bonuses? As in, you do “x” and “y”, and this is how you advance. And when you ask about it, does your manager hem and haw or avoid the subject. Congratulations, you’ve found another red flag found at 90% or more of corporate jobs.Does the majority of people at or above your level use unnecessary buzz words to describe something? As in, can you find a word from grade 5 to grade 7 on the Flesch-Kincaid reading level to replace their silly buzzword, and not only keep the meaning of what they were trying to say, but enhance it? Congratulations, you’ve found another red flag. The key to communication is simplicity and clarity. And buzzwords violate both those rules. And if we can’t have a simple conversation about “my contract” and not “annual incentive protocol”, then we have a red flag on our hands.Do the dumbest people get promoted, and the superstars get passed over or marginalized? Congratulations young padawan, you’ve uncorked another red flag. And this, like #7, happens at 90% or more of corporate companies. It’s red flag football, and you never score a touchdown.Does your new company change “direction” every 2–4 weeks? Pat yourself on the back detective, you’ve found another red flag. If management cannot figure out what to do, and they get paid large coin to do one job, then you’ve found yourself at an insane asylum. Best to pull the cord and exit stage left.Heed these 10 rules my friends, they just might save your life down the road.

My retained and paid attorney failed to show up in court (on my behalf), Now he is ignoring me. His law firm apologized but the damage is done. What should I do?
Write a letter to the lawyer and managing partner at the firm describing in detail:when you retained them, what you paid them and when (enclose a copy of the engagement letter if you have one - many states require written agreements - if you don’t have one, mention that no written engagement letter was provided. Also enclose a copy of any receipt for payment),what services he was supposed to provide, what he failed to do,when the hearing he missed took place and what the hearing was for, what happened as a result of his failure to appear, how you were damaged as a result of his failure to appear, stating the fact that he apologized and how (phone, email - if email enclose a copy) and whenrequesting full refund of the retainer, and advising that you are reporting the attorney and the firm to the State Bar Association.Show that a “cc” of the letter including enclosures is going to the State Bar.Be sure to date your letter, include your full name and contact information, and to keep a copy of the letter and all other documents you are enclosing for yourself.Contact your State Bar Association and tell them you want to report this incident. They may have a form for you to fill out. If so, get it, complete it, and submit it with a copy of your letter to the attorney and all enclosures. If not, send them a letter telling them you are filing a grievance and enclosing a copy of the letter to the attorney and enclosures.A Bar representative may call you after you file your grievance for more information. If you suffered signNow damage beyond the loss of fees paid, contact an attorney who handles legal malpractice cases to see whether you have a viable claim. Most attorneys will meet with you for free initially to evaluate your case.

What will happen if you provide your SSN for employment while on visa over stay in the I-9 form?
To answer your immediate concern, no, neither IRS nor the SSA will report your friend to immigration service. Both agencies get billions of dollars every year as taxes from unauthorized workers, and they don't have the knowledge of who's authorized or who is making an honest mistake (people misstype their SSNs all the time). On top of it, many if not the majority of immigrants do not inform SSA when their immigration status changes to that of a permanent resident or citizen (or any other status that allows employment), so these agencies truly would not know much beyond whether someone spelled their name/SSN correctly. Now let's address your friend's status. First of all, misrepresentation on the I-9. Had she checked the 'US citizen' box, she would most likely be totally screwed (i.e. permanent inadmissibility to the US without the possibility of a waiver, even if she marries a US citizen), but if she claimed to be a permanent resident, it would be much harder for the USCIS to ban her just for that. However, it is much safer for someone working without authorization to work as a contractor, not an employee. W-9 does not require you to disclose your immigration status, and this way both the contractor and the employer are safe. I know people who have worked for years as contractors without authorization, and have been able to get permanent residence (but only through marriage to a citizen).Second, there is an important distinction in the immigration code that your friend needs to understand, which may save her behind, after all. While her employment is unauthorized and she is out of status, it does not necessarily mean she is illegally present - yet. And there is a world of difference between being out of status and being illegally present. Once she is illegally present for 180 days, the 3 year admissibility bar kicks in, and she will be unable to legalize her status (unless, again, it's a marriage to USC). The date she needs to look at comes either from her work visa approval or the stamp she got when she last entered the country, whichever happened later. If that date has not passed or passed less than 180 days ago, she can still get a new work visa, but she will have to leave the country and come back (most likely will have to go to the consulate). It is called date on I-94, and she should definitely talk to an immigration lawyer about it.Third, yes, she needs to file her taxes. Being employed unauthorized does not mean you don't have to file a return. In fact, the IRS treats unauthorized workers the same way it treats legal immigrants - in the eyes of IRS they are all 'resident aliens'. In fact, not filing a return may present problems later if she ever gets to apply for citizenship.P.S. If you thought the US immigration system is punitive, then you need to know that your friend is one the few lucky ones who get to come to the US legally, a privilege not offered to the vast majority of would be immigrants. In other words, others have it worse.

What did you do after getting recommended from SSB?
What did you do after getting recommended from SSB?It was this day of 02nd July at SSB Bhopal when in second and last attempt I was recommended for training at OTA. Six months back, I was rejected at SSB Allahabad. When I was in the list of selected candidates, it was the biggest feeling of achievement. I had worked on it since last seven years. I had joined in the ranks of Indian Navy seven years back. After completing two years of basic training as Naval boy, I ventured onto realisation of alleviating my career from rank to Officer. I took admission for graduation as external candidate. I used to sail on board warship. I used to perform six hours duty and in next six hours of rest, I used to study for three hours and sleep for three hours. When i was in last year of the graduation, I attempted both simultaneously, the CDS exam and final year. I Passed both but got rejected in SSB. I had come to Allahabad from Andaman islands for SSB. Having been rejected, I decided not to show face to my father and went back to port Blair to be back with unit. I had one more chance . This time again I passed CDS and made it at SSB Bhopal. As I found my name in the list, I kept the happiness hidden as there were other candidates who were depressed as they could not make it.The first call I made was to my Commanding Officer. He was waiting for the news. I could hear him making announcement on PA system in unit lines about my selection. He ordered me “ Last time after you failed at SSB Allahabad, you didn't go on leave. Now proceed on two weeks leave from Bhopal. Spend time with family. After leave report at Chennai. I will have you flew in air force cargo plane to Port Blair.”I picked up my bag and left SSB centre for railway station. There was some hours left for departure of the train. It was drizzling. I went and sat in solitude at Lake Bhojtal. Closed eyes and thanked god for having bestowed on me what I dreamt. On the way, found shop selling army uniform and accessories.signNowed next day hometown of Aurangabad. Father and Mother were surprised at sudden appearance of me. I had smaller luggage. I used to always bring a defence made whiskey for father. This time I asked him to close eyes. I placed in his handIt took seconds for him to know what was it. He stood up like a young man and embraced me and started weeping. The joy of tears. The news was out in our village that someone first time is going to become officer in army. Two days later my birthday was celebrated amidst the entire village.I left after my leave was over. I reported back to Chennai. The CO had kept his promise.First time in life flew in air and that too in cargo plane. After two months, again the kind CO summoned me and asked me to pack up my bag and report to his office. He said “ I am sorry to inform you that your father has passed away. I am sanctioning you leave again. After rituals, report directly for training at OTA”. He personally dropped me at Port Blair Airport, never to be seen again later”.

I'm the founder of a new startup and recently I heard that when I employ someone, I need to fill out form I-9 for them. The employee needs to fill it out, but I also need to check their identity and status. Is it true that I am required to do that? Is it true that all companies, even big companies that employ thousands of people, do this?
In addition to both you and the employee filling out the form, you need to do it within a certain time period, usually the first day of work for the employee. And as mentioned, you do need to keep them on file in case of an audit. You need to examine their eligibility documents (most often their passport, or their driver's license and social security card, and the list of acceptable documents is included on the form). You just need to make sure it looks like it's the same person and that they aren't obvious fakes. You can find the forms as well as instructions on how to fill them out here: Employment Eligibility Verification | USCIS On the plus side, I-9's aren't hard or time-consuming to do. Once you get the hang of it, it only takes a few minutes.

How do people with horrible handwriting cope? Do they have any strategies for making their writing more readable? What do they do to avoid writing illegible notes/checks/letters?
Had to laugh. Could not help but laugh. I was born to answer this question, hahahahaI cannot upload a sample of my beautiful penmanship due to some technicalities but anyone who knows me can vouch for my super handwriting. Some of the memorable facts that I received over the years:During high school, I was cleaning up boxes under my bed and saw a photo of me in kindergarten. It was Recognition Day. I was standing in front of a nun (Catholic school) and looking toward the audience. What struck me was the award pinned on my blouse“Best in Writing”WHAAAA?? What? What?? I showed it to my mom and sister. They laughed and surmised that the school might have run out of awards and just gave me that -_-Mom could not even recall I had that award. She recalled the other awards I got but forgot I even had this one. After digging through a pile of kid memorabilia, we even saw the actual award ribbon. Yep. Best in Writing. We concluded that I was given that because I could WRITE compared to my classmates. Technicality. I knew HOW to write my name and words better than them. Thanks, I guess.Several people over the years could not read my name when I write it down. Even my own childhood BFF had a hard time reading my letters for her. Yep, you read that right. Even with my horrible penmanship, I loved (still do) writing.Another unexpected sort-of-compliment moment was when a college instructor commented on my handwriting. Can’t recall why the conversation went that route but what she said was“Pim’s handwriting is… it’s big and roundish. It’s easy to read.”Hahahaha xD I saw her struggle not to offend me, hahahaTo answer your question, when I have to make sure that my handwriting needs to be read/ seen right, I write big enough for the space available, I emphasize curves better and really try not to rush in jotting down words. In spite of my regal penmanship, I still write a lot in my journal, sticky notes and every other opportunity that this skill can be displayed big and proud ;)

Can I claim my parent as a dependent 2019?
Note: The 2017 Tax Cuts and Job Act eliminates personal and dependent deductions, so starting in 2019, you will no longer be able to claim your parent as a dependent. Instead, you may be able to claim a $500 tax credit for any non-child dependents.
-
Who can be claimed as a dependent in 2019?
Your relative cannot have a gross income of more than $4,150 in 2018 and be claimed by you as a dependent. Do you financially support them? You must provide more than half of your relative's total support each year.
-
How much can a dependent earn in 2019?
For 2019, the standard deduction for a dependent child is total earned income plus $350, up to a maximum of $12,200. Thus, a child can earn up to $12,200 without paying income tax.
-
Who qualifies as a dependent?
A dependent is a person other than the taxpayer or spouse who entitles the taxpayer to claim a dependency exemption. Each dependency exemption decreases income subject to tax by the exemption amount. A taxpayer cannot claim a dependency exemption for a person who can be claimed as a dependent on another tax return.
-
What documents are needed to claim a dependent?
Birth Certificate. The most direct way to prove the child is yours to claim is with her birth certificate. The birth certificate enables you to both prove parentage and apply for other legal proofs, such as a Social Security number, and register her for school.
