How do I fill out the New Zealand visa form?
Hi,Towards the front of your Immigration Form there is a check list. This check list explains the documents you will need to include with your form (i.e. passport documents, proof of funds, medical information etc). With any visa application it’s important to ensure that you attach all the required information or your application may be returned to you.The forms themselves will guide you through the process, but you must ensure you have the correct form for the visa you want to apply for. Given that some visa applications can carry hefty fees it may also be wise to check with an Immigration Adviser or Lawyer as to whether you qualify for that particular visa. The form itself will explain which parts you need to fill out and which parts you don’t. If you don’t understand the form you may wish to get a friend or a family member to explain it to you. There is a part at the back of the form for them to complete saying that they have assisted you in the completion of it.If all else fails you may need to seek advice from a Immigration Adviser or Lawyer. However, I always suggest calling around so you can ensure you get the best deal.

Has New Zealand changed from happy go lucky, let's go bungy jumping, mate, to 'fill out this form in triplicate and think the right thoughts'?
Seems like you may have already made up your mind on this one! You can't judge a place based on one experience, of course - and you know that there are jerks everywhere. Does the potential position involve working with/for lawyers? OK..kidding. But are your expectations of New Zealanders too high? I've lived in NZ and the US for equal periods of time, and I've noticed that Americans tend to idealize NZ a bit, ie. Everybody is nice, its very safe, you can hitchhike everywhere...Hobbiton it ain't.My mother grew up in NZ in the fifties, and she found it crushingly conformist, backward, and old-fashioned at the time. She (and many others) couldn't wait to leave the country to move to...London, Australia, the US...anywhere. NZ was about thirty years behind the rest of the world, and that wasn't necessarily a good thing. Over the years I think NZ that reserved, self-conscious atmosphere has lessened, NZ becoming more open minded, more sophisticated, and more secure in its identity. I would say it's definitely more "PC" and conservative than Australia (but what country isn't?).Australia is becoming more like the United States, and NZ is becoming less like Australia. The thing that strikes me as the biggest difference between NZ and the US is that in the US you are encouraged to be as confident and self-promoting as possible, whereas here it's kind of frowned upon. There's a phenomena known as "Tall Poppy Syndrome" in NZ where you must cut down the "tall poppies", ie. those who are more successful than you, to make yourself feel better. I do miss the utter (blind) self-confidence of Americans.I would say that the American "niceness" you speak of, that fake smiley shit, doesn't exist here and I don't think it will start any time soon. I do like how straightforward people are here. NZers are far more likely to invite you to their homes than Americans are (again, this depends on what part of the states you are from. I'm from the passive-aggressive Northwest). One final point: Auckland is so thoroughly different from the rest of the country, and if your job will be based in Auckland this might be the heart of the problem. Auckland was voted the Least Friendliest City in NZ recently (not that there's a lot of competition, but still). You might fare better in Wellington.Don't worry, this is still a really great country, on the whole I find people a lot more trustworthy - and has not been taken over by the PC Police. But do be aware that while America is very much the "Wild West" of free speech, I find NZ to be a bit more stringent on that one. I was shocked to find when I moved back here that there is an Official Censor, which would never exist in the United States (we librarians wouldn't let that happen).

What's the best advice to writing an "expression of interest" to immigrate to New Zealand?
Thanks for the A2A. The BEST advice I can give you is reading the questions carefully on the form and making sure you answer them correctly and truthfully. As Immigration New Zealand gets a lot of applications, they wouldn't bother about applications which have obvious mistakes. Take time to ensure all your documents are in order. They verify all the documents. Other things to know are:Expressions of Interest that have total points of 140 or more will be selected automatically from the Pool Expressions of Interest that have a points total of 100 or more but less than 140, and include points for anoffer of skilled employment or current skilled employment in New Zealand, are selected (according to their points ranking) in sufficient numbers to meet New Zealand’s Immigration Programme requirements. The "expression of interest" (EOI) form is divided into multiple sections. Most of the sections require you to answer basic questions about yourself, and any of your dependents. You gain extra points for some things such as having a close family member who is a resident in NZ, having post-graduate qualifications and if your occupation is included in the 'Area of absolute skills shortage'. Of course, bonus points if you already have a job offer from an employer in New Zealand. You will improve your chances greatly (almost automatically selected) if you have a job offer in New Zealand already. You will also have better chances of being selected if your occupation is one that is included in the 'Long Term Skills Shortage List'. Here is the list - http://skillshortages.immigratio...Here is a guide to the EOI - http://www.nukiwi.com/nzis1101EO...Hope that helps. Good luck :)

What are the chances of being invited to apply for New Zealand's skilled migrant visa under the expression of interest?
Hi, with recent changes to NZ immigration law unfortunately you will not qualify for a direct resident visa. The two important criteria to be met after recent changes to policy are, 1) You should have skilled employment/offer of skilled employment in New Zealand or 2) You should have studied in New Zealand for at least 2 years leading to a doctorate or masters. If you do not have at least one of these, then a direct resident visa is ruled out. Plus you need to get 160 points for age, qualifications, work experience, etc and you need to be of good character and health. You can signNow this points’ threshold and also fulfill condition 1 above if you get a genuine job offer from NZ. But finding jobs directly here in NZ when you are not present in the country is almost impossible unless you are very qualified and experienced in one of our skill shortage areas. So that avenue is also not worth pursuing till you get into the country first. There are other ways of course and for some the next best option could be a Skilled Migrant Category Job Search Visa. But again most people don't qualify for this either unless you are very qualified and experienced in one of our skill shortage areas. Even if you qualify the rules do not permit any family members to accompany and for a lot of people this is not acceptable as they want to travel with their family. Alternately there is also a study+settle pathway for which you will definitely be eligible and strongly recommended, especially as a couple (if married) where one of you can study and work part-time and the other can work full time from day one. If you choose the right level of course, potentially you can both end up with work visas for 4 years which is a lot of time to fulfill any requirements for eventual residency. Also your child/children will be eligible for education in NZ as domestic students ie free education if you opt for this pathway. This pathway is strongly recommended since many couples have used it successfully. I would suggest one of you to take up a course and the other one can come on a work visa as you both have very good credentials and can find a job here. This in turn can lead to the PR subject to meeting the requirements. This is something to be considered if you or your spouse have contemplated higher studies at any time even at this stage in your career, especially as a pathway to migration. Its also very viable if you are single too. Hope this helps :)Follow this group for continuous updates on NZ settlement opportunities and visa information - https://www.facebook.com/groups/...

How long did it take you from the time you sent your expression of interest till the moment you got your permanent visa in New Zealand?
It was in 2004 so nearly ten years ago, but from memory, we started the process in early September and arrived in early December? Does that help? For what it's worth, moving from NYC to Wellington was one of the best decisions we ever made as a family! Let me know how I can help.
