Sometimes it is incredibly difficult to get to see someone who specializes or is experienced with DBT, so I can see attempting the exercises on your own in tandem with CBT as being helpful, at least until you can get in DBT sessions.In my case, since my BPD is more “mild” and I had been in therapy for a long time prior to my BPD diagnosis for my depression and anxiety, my therapist and I found that I had already been implementing a lot of DBT techniques already on my own, which made the process a bit easier for me. I didn't have to teach myself an entirely new way of thinking, but rather just enforce and build upon much of what was already there to better manage my emotional deregulation in times of extreme stress.That being said, going through DBT with my therapist was still much more helpful than anything I could have done on my own. It helped me realize that I wasn’t far from the right path, and it really helped me improve my coping skills and mindfulness. It took me from a novice, to an intermediate, and will continue until I am an expert.I absolutely reccommend that you explore DBT and CBT on your own and learn all you can because it is extremely helpful. However, it’s not a substitute for a therapist. Ideally you want both.

Animals are good for the cranky soul.Can they take on any household daily responsibilities (scheduled?)Doing some kind of walking activity would help them expend energy. Working at the Good Will would be fun. There are still good finds they could have first go at.Well, maybe going out every day will be a good change of pace. Being needed is always good. I encourage strongly finding somewhere they can be useful, where a supervisor could keep them busy.You could drop them off and pick them up, sending them with a bagged lunch and healthy snack.The holidays is always a good time.

Therapy doesn’t always help because you are telling a complete stranger your darkest, deepest, most painful experiences. They cannot relate because their childhood was full of love and respect and green lollipops. The therapist says “how did that make you feel when nothing was done to change the situation or when nobody was held accountable? Well how the hell do you think he feels. Confused, angry, sad. Every negative emotion you can think of. Then the therapist wants to know what coping mechanisms you use- obviously you don’t or you wouldn’t be talking to them for $100 an hour.I did it by finding a lady my age who had experienced a scarily similar childhood to mine. Together as we talked we suddenly didn’t feel so quite alone. There was someone else who could understand my thought processes and more importantly a person I could tell everything without fear of feeling ashamed. Had I not found a person to talk to one on one which I feel really is best, my next step was going to be a group session where again people have shared similar experiences and can appreciate why you feel the way you do.The internet is a great place to find information on local counselling groups, survivors of physical abuse, mental abuse etc. I would suggest that or find a survivors chat room and once you find someone with similar experiences ask if they would be interested in contacting you directly either through email or messenger or some other program. If you live close you might even be able to get together after several conversations. For me it was nice to get down to the level of pain I felt and how it still deeply impacted my life. How it effected my children and my lack of trust for anyone but myself to look After my children. I trusted nobody. Everyone was a suspect if I even saw a tiny little red dot on their butt or a rash, even if they were taking too long changing a diaper I was in there supervising everyone and anybody. The fear of repeating the cycle even. It is very important to get the help he needs to heal his heart and soul. The sooner the better. Heck even I’m around if he needs although same sex is actually more suitable for shared experiences.Good luck

Definitely ask for a psychologist referral!  You want someone on your side who can understand your issues and be willing and eager to advocate for you with the beancounters because disability can be rather hard to get some places, like just south of the border in America.Having a psychologist means you have a more qualified specialist filling out your papers (which is a positive for you and for the government), and it means you can be seeing someone who can get to know your issues in greater depth and expertise for further government and non-profit organization provided aid.If seeing a psychologist on a regular basis is still too difficult for you, start with your initial appointment and then perhaps build up a rapport with a good therapist through distanced appointments (like via telephone, if that is easier) until you can be going into a physical office.  It would probably look good on the form if your psychologist can truthfully state that you are currently seeking regular treatment for your disorders because of how serious and debilitating they are.I don't know how disability in Canada works, but I have gone through the process in the US, and specifically for anxiety and depression, like you.  Don't settle for a reluctant or wishywashy doctor or psychologist, especially when it comes to obtaining the resources for basic survival.  I also advise doing some internet searches on how to persuasively file for disability in Canada.  Be prepared to fight for your case through an appeal, if it should come to that, and understand the requirements and processes involved in applying for disability by reading government literature and reviewing success stories on discussion websites.

Sometimes it’s hard to ask a parent to join you in therapy especially if you have something that you want to share with them and process with the therapist present. It may be easy to ask and explain that you would rather wait until the session starts to share why you want them in there. Another possibility would be for the therapist and you to call the parent/s together and see if they could help you request they join you. When I have counseled a mother and daughter, I invited the mother in with the daughters permission as she was waiting out in the waiting room so it made it easier. I would ask your therapists direction in this as it’s different for each therapist.
