This is difficult to answer as all children are different. In previous answers, people suggest rewards, identifying learning styles and offering assistance.Now, I'll tell you what works. Let them fail. Let them fail miserably. How do I know this? I have lived this and have tried everything.My son, while a great kid, was a lousy student! I would get calls from teachers once a week starting in middle school. I knew then I was in for trouble. Going to high school, I knew that he needed to shape up or college was off the table. Off he went to to high school. He wanted to play football but the team had grade requirements. He barely met them but he did.Now remember, I tried offering tutors, suggested he ask for help from teachers, threatened and begged. After almost 2 years of that bullshit, I stopped. I never took football out of the equation because I felt the work ethic and commitment it required was important for him. He needed (or maybe I needed for him) to be passionate about something. He needed something to feel good about, especially since his older sister was a straight A student all through high school and received multiple academic awards.I, as a single mom, made sure he knew I was there to support his achievements. I went to every single football game of his and volunteered my time to help support his team. What I didn't do is ask him if he had homework, or tests, or exams. I stopped because he needed to learn to do things without his mom nagging him. When he talked about college, I simply said “You're not going to college Noah”. He would say to me “Wow Mom, way to be supportive”.What I wasn't going to do was waste a 529 fund on a kid that wasn't ready to go away to college. He watched all of his friends go away to school while he lived with me at home. He saw independence, fun, freedom and a different world in his friends pics on social media.I had to sit back and watch my son flush his future away because of laziness. Fast forward a year and a half from graduating high school and he is finally leaving the nest to go away to school. He worked his ass off in junior college, got very good grades and will be attending a very reputable college.Failure works!!!! Pestering, bribing and punishment doesn't. At least not for my kid.

This is very late for normal Fall 2019 admissions to 4 year colleges, although some state colleges do take applications at this time and later. Many private college application period has already ended. The application for the 2020–21 school year is not open until October 2019. One reason I mention this is because it can help you to file the FAFSA as soon as possible as some aid can run out.Be careful, because I have seen some student file FAFSA for the wrong year and this can disqualify you, because you have to file each year for the year you will be attending.I have worked with foster youth before. As you likely know, you should file FAFSA as an Independent Student using only any income and assets you have and exclude your guardian’s financial info. This is why you are EFC 0.Federal AidWith a EFC of 0 you can get the maximum Pell Grant. This is $6,195 per year (divided into 2 semesters) for up to 12 semesters (or 6 years). You are also eligible to borrow Federal Direct Loans up to $10,500 for freshman year and increasing slightly after. Don’t do this unless you have to to and don’t take this much, the repayment will be too much of a burden.State AidSome states have good aid and some don’t. My state (CA) has very good aid for low income via the Calgrant program. States have deadlines— you need to have filed the FAFSA by the deadline or are not eligible. My state it’s March 2. So what are your grades and test scores like compared to the usual accepted range of the schools you are interested in?You must meet the FAFSA filing deadline for the college— this is usually much earlier than regular federal or state deadlines and is often in the Fall of your Senior year.Outside ScholarshipsThese are scholarships you apply for separately from foundations and organizations. Can include Gates, Coca Cola, Burger King, Elks, Rotary and on. There are some particularly aimed at youth in your situation. Google for ones in your state (X state foster youth scholarships). I recently applied for postgraduate degree admission and it was the same story.So my father who has lost more jobs in two years than a normal person holds in twenty, who has no income and whose address isn't even known to me since he walked out on us is given primary status and my mother's name has to be shoehorned in as “local guardian”.People often tell me to get my dad to do stuff like pick me up from somewhere and there is a horrible moment of awkwardness where I debate whether to tell them he is no longer in my life or smile and just move on.Fathers are an important part of everyone else's life. Oh my gosh, we went through the same bullshit with my youngest and the elementary school.My youngest son was born on Dec 23, 2000, my Christmas gift. He went to school earlier than most of his fellow classmates. He was 4 years and 9 months old when he entered JK, within 2 weeks at school I got a phone call from school. His 27 yrs old teacher complained he is difficult to handle and suggested he has ADHD. I wanted to smack the FUCK out of her but didn't (please excuse my language). I allowed the school to assessed him, and went to his pediatrician and a specialist at SICK KIDS Hospital. They told me he has a mild condition of the bull crap ADHD and will outgrow once he hits his teen. Every freaking young female teachers would complained, their complaints were he has no focus, distracted the class constantly and they can't handle him. His grade 3 and 6 male teachers never once complained, they put him in the front row close to their desk so they can correct his attention. We ended up putting my son on in grade 7, because I got into an arguement with the teacher, she said he got the attitudes from me. I was pissed but I gave in and put him on , in 2 weeks, the side effects of the medication mellowed my son completely, he lost his appetite, lost 25 pounds, his sleeping habits turned into 3 hours instead of 8 hours or more. I watched my son went through a huge drastic change. I was furious and took him off and demanded a matured male teacher or I will get a lawyer and take the school to court.We won, with the help of our pediatrician and the specialists from the hospital. Don't listen to any of their comments, they are not doctors. Their job is to educate our children with subjects we can't, they are just too damn lazy to work on a smart kid and challenge his intellect. So what if a kid has no focus, work with him/her and the child's parent finding a solution.Don't put him on , find solutions, your child is 4 he can learn with a veteran well trained teacher.
