So building new dams or increasing the capacity of our current dams seemed not neccesary. It is also important to note that in 2014 (and today still) other projects also required money. The building of new houses, school and clinics were more relevant back then than spending money on the dams or other sources of water.But then, in the folowing three years, little to no rain fell during the rain seasons, and dam levels decreased rapidly. Other noticable things that happened last year and this year were recordings of +50 degrees Celcius in Australia and -47 degrees Celcius in the US, snow in the sahara desert and deaths because of storms in the Netherlands. Our climate is changing and this will cause climate change-related disasters, including droughts in the World’s major cities.Cape Town will not be the only city affected by climate change, and I think this drought is a good opportunity for South Africans to show that we can work together on problems like this. I also hope that Cape Town can serve as a learning platform for other cities at risk for drought.
