What are some mind-blowing facts about Japan?
A lot of things have already been said! But I will share a few more based on my personal experiences & visits to a few Japanese corporates!Gifting is a religion there. The companies overburdened with souvenirs. a) Tokyo Stock Exchangeb) CITIZEN Factory: A famous Japanese company for Digital equipments. They welcomed with Cap, good luck charms, pen etc.c) TCS Japan: Not purely Japanese but the Japanese branch of an indian company2. Heavy reliance on Seafood / Non-Vegetarian: Being an Indian vegetarian, it can be very difficult to survive in Japan without prior preparations. A funny incident happened when one of my friends asked for vegetarian options in a hotel to which the waiter replied if “Ohh, you are pure veg! So only egg or fish will do”!It’s just a huge tuna fish-head. Nothing worth seeing :P3. Strong focus on detailing In India, we don’t really know what detailing mean. Apart from warm-seater toilets and technologically advanced traffic system, even their menus are detailed for various spice levels.4. Tokyo Stock Xchange: They must be the only stock exchange who use opposite signs. The stocks which are improving are shown in red while the falling stocks are shown in green. They have interesting reasoning for that! Want to take a guess? Comment section, please!5. Indian Food: A little bit of patriotism is necessary, right! For a risk-averse person like me who doesn’t take risk when it comes to food, I searched for Indian restaurants. I finally stumbled upon a scene in a Tokyo Hotel which was mind-blowing! India-Pakistan rivalry is well-known but who knew the two flags can be seen together on the streets of Tokyo. This restaurant was run by Shaikh Sahab, a Pakistani who got so emotional to know that I am an Indian. He offered a delicious free tandoori chicken! What more can you expect? Much love, sir! <36. Cars: The most exquisite models of cars in any country. McLaren, Porsche, Ferrari etc. you name it!It was an extremely interesting country for me to explore! I wish you all the luck for the Tokyo Olympics 2020.Last but not the least, it would be a shame to not show the beauty of Tokyo and what their cleanliness is all about.I will keep adding !Thanks for reading :) . Have a nice day!

How should one fill out the DAF form for the UPSC civil services?
1) Things to keep in mind while filling your DAF1. DAF is not like your resume, the more achievements the more you will score. Here DAF is only a way to know about you so that they can ask questions.2. Please do not try to fake or write for the sake of writing. If there is no achievement, then don’t create one, no hobby then don’t write fake one .3. Be specific. For you music might be a hobby (listening in free time), but they will expect you to know about music in detail. . You might like cooking but they will ask you anything related to cooking ( about preservatives, masalas, cooking recepies, types of cuisines etc).So better to avoid writing such open ended things. Write specific things which you know you can prepare.a4. Writing something and not able to answer basic questions related to those things sends a very wrong impression. When you are filling DAF ensure you write less but meaningful things you are confident about.2) Service Preference ListImportant : These are my personal views which can be biased. Detail about each service, growth opportunities can be found here http://persmin.gov.in/AIS1/Welco...Brief about Services1. IASGood work, Good Infrastructure and highly respectable. Issue is interference and work pressure. If you want a very peaceful life and tension free life then think about it.2. IFSWork as diplomats. Good services, especially for people who like to travel, pursue intellectual hobbies. You will have alternate terms in foreign country and India. Yes do give a consideration from family perspective and secondly from perspective that if you want paraphernalia you will not get it.3. IPSMostly work is in law and order domain. Lot of power, infra and Paraphernalia. However IPS is a very tough job and not everyone is made for it. It needs lot of patience, sacrifice in personal life and has maximum interference. So choose accordingly.4. IRS IT and CustomsMy personal advice would be to choose IT over customs ( stable cadre, timely promotions , decent infra and good places of postings) However work can appear to be boring due to a desk job restricted to taxation. Customs on the other hand is having more variety.5. IRTS vs IAASIRTS is IAS of railways. Lot of manpower under you. Good infra and facilities. However issue is very hectic life especially if you are in operations side as you have to manage timely running of trains. So don't opt it if you want a peaceful and tension free life.IAAS on the other hand is a totally different service. It audits almost everything in government. Remember it is not just auditing of accounts here but a larger purview. Also stable posting, normal working hours, postings in state capital and Delhi plus lot of foreign visits and yes timely promotions. Plus everyone fears an auditor. However you won't enjoy executive powers and perks like IRTS. So decide what kind of life you want.6. Accounting ServicesIRASBest among accounting services. Total financial power in railways. Good infrastructure, work life balance and good postings. Plus lot of opportunities for deputation due to finance.IDASThis is also a good service. Lot of financial power in defence sector. Good infrastructure, work life balance and good postings. Plus lot of opportunities for deputation due to financeICASThis is more of an accounting service. It has the responsibility to consolidate accounts of all the Dept except few. Posting in Delhi. However housing, car can be an issue.IPTAFSThis service has lost lot of ground due to BSNL and MTNL separating from DoT. So major work is collecting spectrum allocation and licence fee. Infrastructure issues are also there.7. Railway servicesRailway services have good infrastructure and facilities. Housing, car and manpower is not an issue.IRTS - IRAS - IRPSIRPSNot much work, dealing with unions and personnel management .RPFI would suggest to fill it among the bottom 5 services. Its like paramilitary force (Railway Protection Force)8. IPoSGood service. Administration of all post offices. Good infra and facilities. Plus post office's are getting modernized so new work is coming up.9. IDeSThis is a service where you work as CEO of cantonments/defence estates. There is huge infrastructure at your disposal, very good facilities. However growth is stagnant, work is not dynamic. Also you will not always be working in cantonments, HQ postings and other postings are there as well.10. ICLS and ITSBoth are new age services with postings in Capital cities and Delhi. ICLS are regulators of corporate sector. They implement company law and are involved in Registration, M&A, and Liquidation etc. Service seems to have a promising future but as of now it is not much preferred. Reasons include Infrastructure problem, desk work and stagnation as the top level.IT on the other hand deals with trade policy implementation. Officers working closely with traders and exporters. Also working in SEZ, policy work and some International exposure. So work is interesting and promising.Issue with both the services is similar. These are comparatively new service & do not have a huge infrastructure compared to postal, defence and railways. So Car, housing, other facilities might be a little problem. Also at senior level stagnation issue.11. IoFSNot much of an idea but their scope is more or less related to management of ordinance factories. Infra won’t be much of an issue. But usually filled among bottom few services12. Danics & DanipsThese are like State civil services(UT civil service) with a difference that promotions are better compared to most of the states. Many people prefer them at the bottom due to Group B. However in terms of power, work, infra these are better than many group A central services.13. Indian Information ServiceThis is like a PR Job. Most IIS officers work in various media units which are under Ministry of Information and Broadcasting such as DD News, All India Radio, Press Information Bureau etc. Even posted with various Ministries as spokespersons to handle the Ministry's information and communication needs and help in policy formulation. So work wise this is a nice service, plus majorly you stay in Delhi. Infrastructure, car housing is again an issue.14. AFHQ + Pondicherry civil serviceBottom services to be filled. Now how to fill service preference listSee this is a totally personal choice depending on what you want from your life. What matters to you : balanced life ? Quality work ? Power & Infrastructure? Delhi Posting? Decide accordingly. Here are some hints based on common choice1. Most preferred services (IAS – IFS –IPS – IRS IT –IRS Customs – IRTS /IAAS) .2. Less preffered services ( AFHQ , Pondicherry civil services , RPF, IoFS, IPTAFS ,ICLS )3. Middle Category ( IRAS, IDAS, ICAS, IPOS,IDES,ITS,IIS,IRPS)As per meIRTS >IRAS>IRPSIRAS>IDAS>ICASIPOS>IDESIDAS>IDESICAS, IIS, ITS (one is accounts, other is media/PR and one relates to Trade. Usual preference is ICAS – IIS-ITS)4. Adjust DANICS & DANIPS as per your convenience. Some people prefer them after Railway, Defence and Postal while majority put it at the end. Decide as per your own choice.Delhi Posting : ICAS , IISServices where Infrastructure won’t be an issue (Apart from Most preferred services ): IRAS,IRPS,IPOS,IDES,IDAS . I think infra will not be an issue even in IOFS and RPF.3) CADRE PreferenceP.S : Totally personal views. For details you can refer here http://www.iascoachingindelhi.or...UP: great work opportunities and infrastructure. But if you don't want an exciting and challenging life, it should not be high on your list.Bihar: Mostly like UP but more backward.MP, Rajasthan, Haryana: Good cadres. Balanced ones. Usually preferred by people.Punjab: Mixed reviews about the cadre.Jharkhand and Chattisgarh, Odisha: People carry lot of misconceptions. These are nice cadres to work plus good infra. Naxal problem is prevalent only in certain areas. Other issue is these are little backward areas. But I think these are highly underrated cadres .Uttarakhand and Himachal : Decent cadres to work but terrain issues. Not everyone likes hill posting so keep that in mind.Northeast cadres : Mostly people fill them lower in their preference due to factors like distance, culture, hills, personal life etc. Assam-Megahalya is the most preferred choice among north east cadres.J&K : considered a tough posting. Hills + security concerns etc.West Bengal and Kerala : Work wise normal but their political setup is different so many people don't prefer these cadres. So decide accordingly .Andra and Telangana : Good cadres to work. North Indians prefer them most among southern states.Karnataka: fineTamil Nadu : state services is very strong here so at times they hold important posts in the district .Maharashtra : Good cadreGujarat : Mixed reviews.Agmut: mixed reviews. Good thing is you get to stay for long in Delhi.Making choicesI can’t tell you what to opt. But I can share what people preferably fill at lower preference. Again as per my knowledge.- North eastern States- J&K- Kerala and WB ( some people prefer to fill them low)Also sharing some favoured cadres due to different reasons:- Rajasthan, Haryana, MP (Delhi proximity and balanced cadres )- UP & Bihar (Strong power centres for IAS)- AGMUT (Delhi posting, but not for those who like UP , Bihar work culture )- Sorry but I am not able to comment on south Indian cadres due to lack of in depth knowledgeCadres considered bad but are actually not- Chhattisgarh and JharkhandThat is all from my side. Hopefully this post can help you to some extent. All the best

My son wants to rent the basement, I feel bad charging him because it’s my son and I don’t need to take his money. What are some options I can do to make him have responsibility without having to pay me?
This is what my son and I did when he wanted to live independently, but couldn't really afford to live out on his own.I live on the west coast of Canada. Rents are very high, so it is difficult for young people to work at the minimum wage jobs available to them, and live independently. We have a strong Provincial Landlord Tenant Act which governs both landlords and tenants. Everything is very clear, and life is easier for all concerned if landlords use the government forms, and follow the act.My son called me one day, after living away from home for maybe 3 years, saying he wasn't going to be able to pay the rent due in 3 or 4 days. Could he please move back home into his room?I rented a truck, about 3 hours was all I could get at that late date, and we moved him home.It turned out he was having trouble with having a consistent income with the minimum wage jobs he was qualified for at the time.He moved into his childhood room, which is tiny, and my living room became a storage room for the rest of his things. (I have a tenant paying market rent in a one bedroom suite in my basement. It pays the mortgage.)Not long after, we moved him into the master bedroom, which has an ensuite (master bath), and all his things moved from the living room into his room, which is very large.Next, he filled out a provincial government landlord tenant form, and began paying $200 each month.I put a full size fridge and microwave in his room. He did his own grocery shopping, and cooking. He did his own cleaning and laundry. We didn't share a bathroom, so that removed a source of friction.I certainly did not worry about the cleanliness of his room. That's what doors are for, although it turned out he cleaned more regularly than I did.I did not enter his room without permission or proper notice, as per the Landlord Tenant Act.I had already taken him grocery shopping a few times to show him how to shop and cook on a budget.I hired someone else to cut the lawn. My son had no time, and I didn't want to be arguing with him about chores. He was no longer a child. I had my chance raising him. That period of both our lives was over. He was trying his best to be an independent adult in a difficult financial climate, so I treated him like an adult. I also treated him like any other tenant I've had.My thinking was if I wouldn't say it to my tenant downstairs, I didn't say it to him.All of this meant that our only interaction was social, so we became good friends. It worked a treat. We get along great now.Your son is trying to be an adult, taking small steps. Let him. Make him a tenant, and treat him like any other tenant.Charge him $200 a month, which is low enough to keep him there, but high enough that he will have to budget to make sure he can pay it.Treat him the same way you would treat a tenant who is a stranger. Treat him like the adult he wants to be.Let him do his own laundry. Make up a schedule, if necessary. He gets the weekends, you get weekdays; he gets Wednesday and Sunday, you get the rest of the time.Hire someone to mow the grass. Do not expect “family chores" from him, just as you wouldn't from a tenant who is a stranger.Put a full size fridge, a microwave, and a hot plate in his suite if there isn't a kitchen. Then take him grocery shopping and show him how to shop, and cook, on a tight budget.Do not expect him at the family dinner table every night. You will find yourself chasing him to find out when he'll be home for dinner every day. Let him set his own schedule, cook for himself, eat what he wants. If he needs cooking lessons, teach him, or sign him up for a class. After he's settled, invite him for Sunday dinner, but not every week.If he needs to be driven when he drinks too much, pick him up. Ask no questions.Try very hard not to judge as he navigates the difficult time of young adulthood. Help him get through without any life altering issues — everyone alive, no one pregnant, no record. All of this will help him learn how to organize his life successfully in the adult world while he is in a safe place. It will also provide a foundation for your future relationship, and your respect for each other. He wants to be an independent adult. Let him, and help him.It has nothing to do with whether or not you need the rent money. It has everything to do with helping your son become an adult. My son stayed for 2.5 years. It was great having him here. When he left, he got in his car and drove, alone, across the country to live in Toronto, which he felt well prepared to do. I then offered his room to a young, aspiring musician who wanted to live semi-independently, with someone around. She pays market rent, I listen to beautiful music every day, and we both have someone to talk to.If you read my thread, you'll see some of my experiences with my son as he went through young adulthood, and how we navigated to what I now consider successful adulthood.

What are the best ways to think of ideas for a startup?
I see hundreds of startup pitches every year. I am constantly evaluating companies, new incumbents and my competition. I live and breathe the art of business, and if there’s one thing I see emerging, it’s that convenience is king.In a marketplace of distraction, the company’s, products and services that can save you TIME, are going to win. That is why Amazon is a market leader. That is why Prime Now wins. They have simplified the process of buying and selling. They have saved you enormous amounts of time. This is important because it’s the one commodity you can’t get more of. No matter where you are or what your economic situation is, you will never have more time. It’s why we as humans will do anything to purchase it. It’s why we choose the $24 Uber instead of walking. It’s why we pay $7 extra for delivery. It’s why we pay $500 to fly instead of drive. It’s all about time.No one wants complexity layered upon their daily life. No one cares about specifications and numbers and horsepower anymore. People literally want cars to drive themselves!! They want freedom and simplicity and SPEED.It’s one of the biggest market advantages you can possibly create. Uber saves you TIME. Amazon saves you TIME. GrubHub and Seamless and Doordash save you TIME. It’s why they’ve won.So when running your startup, you should be considering how you can save people time. How does your product, your business, or you service expedite a market experience that used to be tedious and tiresome for all? If you are trying to create a competitive advantage, you should really start thinking about SPEED and CONVENIENCE as the two things that will help you succeed. If you can do this, and execute, you are going to have a good chance.More importantly, make sure the end consumer perceives that additional convenience or speed you provide. Too many people focus on shipping a technical iteration or adding features to a product that only complicates the experience. Here is a video where I talk more about how startups succeed:Hope this helps!!If you liked this answer, say hi on:INSTAGRAM | TWITTER | FACEBOOK | SNAPCHAT | ITUNES

Why does the NRA reject a ban on semi automatic guns to people who are under 21? Why do they reject mandatory firearms training for anyone who wants to purchase a gun?
Let me tell you about a law that passed in Maryland in 2013…Post-Sandy Hook, the one party rule state of Maryland decided to push a raft of gun control laws. None of which had anything to do with or could have prevented Newtown but since facts and logic aren’t the strong suit of gun control and control is the name of the day, they rammed these laws through. One of these laws was a fundamental change in handgun ownership. Due to Baltimore being one of the top 5 cities in the USA for violent crime, they pushed for a “Handgun Qualification License” (HQL) as a means of stopping gun violence in the city. They literally sold this law as a gun violence prevention measure. The HQL is a permit-to-purchase for any new handgun from October 1, 2013 onward. You need to have one to buy a handgun in Maryland. So what does getting an HQL entail? Here’s the list:Taking a mandatory, state approved HQL training course by a state approved instructor at your expense. This course is a minimum of four hours and includes a live fire component which limits its location to places where ranges exist or the course is split over several days. Average cost is around $150 not including your travel time.Getting yourself fingerprinted at your expense by a state-approved fingerprint provider with electronic submission capability. Once taken, you have only a few days to submit your application. The cost of the fingerprinting is $50-$80.Submit an HQL application online only via the Maryland State Police Licensing Division website and pay the application fee via debit card or credit card only. No mail in forms, no in-person application, no cash or checks. If you don’t have Internet access you are out of luck. First time fee is $50.Wait for the Licensing Division to process the application. There is no mandated time limit to process the applications and average time is several weeks to a month or more based on informal surveys of applicants. After processing you will receive an HQL card in the mail. This card is the property of the Maryland State Police (it is very clear on this point) and it is your state-issued permission slip to begin the process of purchasing a handgun. The HQL is good for ten years. So, on average based on anecdotal accounts of hundreds of people who have gone through this process and tracked on the Maryland Shooters forum this process costs $200-$300, take around two months to meet the prerequisites to apply unless you’re really lucky and another 2–4 weeks to receive your government permission slip. Now to the fun part… the HQL did not change the prior purchase process in place! Even though a full background check is performed to issue the HQL, you still need to then fill out a purchase request application with the State Police at $10 per transfer, buy the gun, fill out all of the paperwork and still be subject to the 8 day waiting period. The HQL, despite being a license, is merely a license to let you start the process. They did not rescind or modify the process at all and added the HQL as an additional burden to acquire a handgun. It has all of the things that gun control states they want. Deep background check, a photo ID license to get a gun, fingerprinting and mandatory training. It was sold as a crime reduction measure to reduce gun violence in Baltimore and other places. How many HQLs do you think have been acquired by criminals in the 4 1/2 years since its creation? If you answered “Zero”, you’d be correct. So we reject these proposals because I can point to actual, real-world laws that do all of this, was sold on a lie and has done nothing to reduce crime. All it did was impose a signNow burden on the law-abiding in the exercise of their rights. So signNow there are several cases proceeding challenging the HQL requirements. Especially the “online only” element and training requirements that serve as a serious and disproportionate impact on lower income families and would-be owners. How Long Did Your HQL Approval Take?Handgun Qualification License
