The only part of the equation I can gather in is two equal parts: opinionated strength of schedule and record overall. After that, I would venture to say a little bias, a little more bias, and a little bit of “let’s throw in a Cinderella team to quiet the naysayers of our system”. If the question is really how I would fill it out, that would be a difficult task as I am human and would fall to some of their weaknesses (bias, chance, New blood, etc) so I would still say it’s a good job at selecting. A single-elimination, knockout, or sudden death tournament is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of each match-up is immediately eliminated from the tournament. Each winner will play another in the next round, until the final match-up, whose winner becomes the tournament champion.

Continuing this process shows that for 16 teams, there are 8 + 4 + 2 + 1, or 15 total games. Using brackets can be done for any number of teams. For 64 teams, there are 63 games; for 32 teams, 31 games.

This format requires eight rounds, five for the round-robin and three for the modified double-elimination. The most games a team will play is seven.

Therefore, in a knockout tournament of 100 teams, there needs to be 99 games, each game eliminating one participant such that we are left with the winner after 99 games.

To determine the number of games for a single round-robin tournament, as seen above, use the following formula, N x (N-1)/2. With a tournament of 6 teams, the calculation would be: 6 x (6-1)/2 = 6 × 5/2 = 30/2 = 15 games.
