NHS is kind of a joke. At my high school at least, the main criteria to get into NHS were GPA (unweighted) and involvement at school. They did not take into account the rigor of classes taken and overly favored those who participated in sports. As a result, there were kids in the society who took no honors/AP classes (many offered at my school) and probably participated in one sport, not even necessarily at the varsity level, who got in while there were 1 or 2 people who challenged themselves with difficult classes and were highly involved outside the classroom (but not so much at school) who didn’t.Since NHS admits quite a few “average” high schoolers because of their odd selection standards, its value goes down a bit. It’s something that doesn’t really help you out in the college admissions process, because about 85%+ of applicants (approximating this) at a top school probably have it on their resume. Most colleges know that a lot of “superficial” people participate in NHS, and a lot don’t even really participate actively in it (fake service hours, etc).In fact, I can name a few people from my high school who didn’t participate in NHS and still got into top universities. One girl was very talented and was one of the best in my grade, but she didn’t want to do NHS because she thought it was a waste of time, as she participated in many other, more meaningful activities. She ended up getting a full scholarship to a top liberal arts college. One of my friends didn’t make the GPA cut off (he was lazy, but very intelligent), but ironically got into UChicago, a school known for its academic rigor. Similarly, one girl got into NHS but was kicked out for not maintaining the GPA requirement the next year, but also got into UChicago.Because you have participated in several campaigns outside of school, colleges won’t care that you didn’t participate in NHS. It’s not like college admissions offers have a checklist, in which NHS is an item; you have demonstrated your altruistic passion for community service in an even more meaningful way and colleges will note that. That makes you stand out a lot more than someone who just did NHS and claimed they loved serving the community, while that was their only service activity.
