Congrat’s on your training! For the next week you can do a few things to optimize what ability you have carefully developed. Let’s discuss how to make sure you have your best odds of performing your best race this weekend:First, hydrate. Drink lots of fluids and consume electrolytes to help keep everything balanced. I don’t mean drink a little extra here and there, I mean concentrate on getting lots of fluid and electrolytes into your body during the full course of every day.Second, eat purposefully: Eat extra carbs. You want your muscles loaded up with glycogen. On that note, don’t eat much fat. No booze. Eat fruits and vegetables, especially high fiber a few days before your race. You’ll be faster if you can get those intestines cleaned out and not carry extra waste in your body. On race day, eat only light foods with complex carbs and a little protein. It’s OK if you get a little hungry. You want to be lean and mean, well hydrated, well-fueled, and otherwise mostly empty by the time you compete.Third, stretch. Don’t do anything to make your muscles sore or tired a day or two before your race, but warm up and do some stretching routines to get everything balanced and ready to perform. I like to do my stretching in a hot tub when I can. Do 30 minutes or more of careful stretching one day and at least 15 minutes on the next. It should feel good. Get a massage a few days out if you can… nothing too deep, but enough to help relax and loosen everything up.Fourth, sleep. Get an awesome night’s sleep for at least a few nights in a row and you’ll be feeling good.Finally, focus. Visualize your race. Decide beforehand where you’re going to dig deep. Decide now that you’re not going to back off when it starts to hurt. Prepare in advance for the fatigue and the pain. Also, maybe watch an inspiring running movie (Without Limits, Chariots of Fire, etc.) or YouTube clips of great races, read “Once a Runner”, “Born To Run”, or find other material that makes you really want to run.Most of all, run happy. Joyful runners are hard to beat.
