Scouting has been declining in membership. When will the Boy Scouts of America die out?
As of 2018 - I think the best answer is Not any time soon. Yes enrollment is down and some aspects of the program are at odds with today’s lifestyle, but here is a simple truth, you only grow old and die when you stop learning and adapting to the world around you.The Scouts are very much adapting. In the last 5 years or so, they have stopped judging and excluding people from the program based on gender and sexual orientation and added additional support for Scouts with special needs. I believe as many others do, that this is not a foundation for dying out, it is one for growth and change.I’m not sure if Scouting will ever be as big as it was 60 years ago and this is true of almost all service organizations, people spend their time differently today than long terms commitments to voluntary organizations.People however still thrive on learning, developing leadership and trying to do good - that doesn’t seem to change and that is somethings Scouts definitely offers.Me personally, I think change happens and its usually for the best. Just traded my Zune in for an Ipod - progress!

What percentage of Boy Scouts signNow the Eagle Scout rank in Boy Scouts of America? How long does it take?
Of all Boy Scouts, only about 3–5% of them become Eagle Scouts. However, this includes all Boy Scouts, even those who dropped out after a few months or barely participate. For those who put forth the effort and truly desire the award, success rates are much higher. That doesn’t mean it’s easy. If it were, the numbers would be a lot higher than 3–5% and it wouldn’t be as respected as it is. A lot of time, energy, leadership, and sometimes blood sweat and tears are needed to get there. As for the timing, it really does depend. I was in Scouts for a decade (including Cub Scouts) and earned my Eagle award late, six days before my 18th birthday. The earliest you could technically do it is around 12 or 13, assuming you started at 10 and really just did it all in a whirlwind. Most take longer and earn it around 16 or 17, and sometimes at 18 (there are limits to that). In my opinion, as a scout you shouldn’t focus everything on Eagle. Start your required badges early and always be planning for it, but take the opportunity to enjoy the program. Go to Philmont, volunteer, go on bike rides and hikes and everything else. You will develop leadership skills and personal growth that you didn’t think possible, and that will make your Eagle award all the more rewarding. Despite all of the blisters and cuts, the long miles and cold nights and sunburns and bug bites and sometimes worse, scouting is a truly transformative experience. Enjoy the journey. If I had to do my ten years of scouting again, I would in a heartbeat.

Will the Former Boy Scouts of America be handing out the pink knit hats anytime soon?
Nope. The program is staying the same, with no major changes to uniform, rank requirements, or troop leadership. It’s also not the former Boy Scouts of America. The company will co yinue to be the Boy Scouts of America. The only change in name is to the program for youths from 11–18, “Scouts BSA” rather than “Boy Scouts”, which makes perfect sense, as it’s not just boys. , thr majority of internarional scouting programs are co-ed already, all of which have gender-neutral names.

What was the logic behind changing the Boy Scouts of America's name to "Scouts BSA"? The name literally translates to "Scouts Boy Scouts of America".
What was the logic behind changing the Boy Scouts of America's name to “Scouts BSA”? The name literally translates to “Scouts Boy Scouts of America”.First, Boy Scouts of America is not changing its name. Boy Scouts of America is a national organization that operates several youth related programs focused on the organization's mission. The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.[1]There are five programs. Cub Scouts, Boy scouts, Explorers, Sea Scouts and Venturing.[2] A sixth program is currently in pilot stages called STEM Scouts.[3]Of those programs three of them have been completely co-ed since their inception. Those are Explorers, Venturing and STEM Scouts.Sea Scouts became co-ed in 1969, when BSA introduced Exploring and attempted to incorporate Sea Scouts into that program. The intregration failed to catch on so later BSA maintained Sea Scouts as a separate program. Then in 2016, after a decades long push by Scouters, BSA decided to begin the process of allowing boys and girls to participate in all of their programs. Several Councils joined the pilot programs allowing girl's into Cub Scout Packs and permitting them to form Boy Scouts Troops.Through this process at no point are these Units co-ed. Instead, the boys and girls are kept separate in Dens for Cub Scouts and in their own separate Troops in Boy Scouts. As of August 2018, the Cub Scout program is completely “co-ed” in that boys and girls are part of the same Pack.Coming up in February 2019, the last BSA program will permit girls to join. The problem though, is that this program is currently called Boy Scouts. It is a very gender specific name given that both genders can participate. This means the program needs a name change. But what do you call it. It has been BSA's signature program for over 100 years and Scouting is critical to that. Scout has to remain in the name. Wait…it is BSA's signature program. Ahh…Scouts BSA…it literally becomes the organization's signature program by carrying the organization name. Perfect. The organization isn't changing, just the name of the signature program.Footnotes[1] Mission & Vision - Boy Scouts of America[2] Programs - Boy Scouts of America[3] Science Technology Engineering Math

Why did the Boy Scouts of America change the name of their organization to Scouts BSA?
The organization name hasn't changed - that would take an act of congress since it's a congressionally chartered organization. One of the five programs under the organization has had a name change. The organization - Boy Scouts of America covers:Cub Scouts BSA 5–10 (girls and boys, separate dens)Boy Scouts (boys only) - Soon to be: Scouts BSA 10–17 (girls and boys, separate troops)Venturing BSA 14–20 (Co-ed)Sea Scouts BSA 14–20 (Co-ed)Varsity BSA (defunct) 14–17 (boys only)Explorers BSA/LfL (secondary congressional charter for reasons)Only one program name is changing. Not the entire organization name.

How does the Boy Scouts of America enforce its exclusion of gay and atheist members?
Speaking as an Eagle Scout myself, this varies heavily from Troop to Troop. The adult leadership of each Troop has lots of leeway over how they run their own Troop, meaning the fate of a gay or atheist Scout is really up to the individual adults leading the troop more so than regional or national councils. But from my experience, Scouts are not commonly evicted from BSA solely on the basis of homosexuality or atheism. Now, I know they have been at times and I know that people across the country have different experiences with this, but I've not seen a great deal of heavy enforcement of those rules, in my Troop or in Troops that I interacted with. I've known several gay or atheist Scouts, and while none that came through my Troop made Eagle, a great number of them I met at camps for Scouts in leadership positions (e.g. National Youth Leadership Training, Order of the Arrow, etc.), and at least one of them has made Eagle by now.Generally, Boy Scouts who have run into trouble on the basis of sexuality or religious views were not expelled just for that. Essentially, Scouts could have whatever opinions/lifestyle they chose, BUT when in the Scout uniform and at Scout camp, they were expected to show respect to the traditions of Scouting. An atheist Scout with whom I was decent friends didn't run into trouble, but a Scout who repeatedly mocked or denigrated others' religious beliefs would get in trouble. And Scouts who were seen as going overboard with expressing themselves would get a talking-too from adult leaders but they'd have chances to revert to showing respect--much the same way that Scouts with behavior troubles got second and third chances. Now, I've only ever known one Scout who was gay AND an atheist (I live in Indiana, mind you), and he was in fact expelled, but it was not for those things but for unrelated and highly inappropriate behavior (constant sexual jokes and obscene gestures, disrespecting authority and bullying younger Scouts) that got this kid expelled--his conduct was un-Scoutlike, and that's why he was thrown out. I've never known a Scout who was expelled from Scouting for being gay or being an atheist, though I've seen a few need to talk to the Scoutmaster about, again, showing respect for the beliefs and traditions of Scouting while at Scout events. But that's just my own experience.

How do you feel about the Boy Scouts of America's decision to allow transgender boys?
Cautiously optimistic. Cautiously. As one of my friends, a former Scoutmaster kicked out of Scouting years ago for his sexual orientation, reminded me today, the policy change opens the door to transgender boys’ membership, but does not:give transgender children resources to protect themselves from harassment.change the fact that the BSA has yet to actually signNow out to the LGBTQ+ community, a group that has been alienated repeatedly, past not discriminating against them on the surface.address the longstanding homophobia and transphobia that exists around the country towards youth members of the Scouting program. Adults and youth harassing youth. This decision lets transgender boys in, but also opens these boys to the same kind of harassment many of their cisgender peers currently face.set up any sort of system to track and ensure compliance and safety.acknowledge the BSA’s troubled past and give any indication of lasting, meaningful change. So does this decision seem rather superficial? Leaning towards yes for me.Does that make it inherently bad? No! As a young person who has benefited greatly from my community’s Scouting experience, I want to see this experience offered to as many young people as possible. In order for this experience to be healthy, however, the BSA needs to go further. This is only a first step towards being a truly inclusive, sustainable organization. Please explore Scouts for Equality for more on this topic.
