To me, no, I don't find it strange. Maybe his level of urgency and persistence about it is strange but the actual skill seems normal to me. I was 15, when I was taken to the bank to open my first checking/savings acct. My mom and grandparents showed how to write checks, how to read a check, sign a check, fill out deposit forms etc. It IS an integral and impt life skill and I see your Father's reasoning for it. Elementary age seems young bc a kid that young isnt going to have a real reason to personally use checks, BUT getting a head start on learning those basics is invaluable.I never considered doing that with kids and I find it to be a great idea. But HE should be teaching it to your sibling like he taught it to you - that is only fair. Sure most of your classmates won't have a clue about banking, but you will be ahead of them. It's a very impt thing to know how to do, so the younger the better I say - kids are sponges!

Departments of education and school districts always have to make decisions about what to include in their curriculum.  There are a lot of life skills that people need that aren't taught in school.  The question is should those skills be taught in schools?I teach high school, so I'll talk about that.  The typical high school curriculum is supposed to give students a broad-based education that prepares them to be citizens in a democracy and to be able to think critically.  For a democracy to work, we need educated, discerning citizens with the ability to make good decisions based on evidence and objective thought.  In theory, people who are well informed about history, culture, science, mathematics, etc., and are capable of critical, unbiased thinking, will have the tools to participate in a democracy and make good decisions for themselves and for society at large.  In addition to that, they should be learning how to be learners, how to do effective, basic research, and collaborate with other people.  If that happens, figuring out how to do procedural tasks in real life should not provide much of a challenge.  We can't possibly teach every necessary life skill people need, but we can help students become better at knowing how to acquire the skills they need.  Should we teach them how to change a tire when they can easily consult a book or search the internet to find step by step instructions for that?  Should we teach them how to balance a check book or teach them how to think mathematically and make sense of problems so that the simple task of balancing a check book (which requires simple arithmetic and the ability to enter numbers and words in columns and rows in obvious ways) is easy for them to figure out.  If we teach them to be good at critical thinking and have some problem solving skills they will be able to apply those overarching skills to all sorts of every day tasks that shouldn't be difficult for someone with decent cognitive ability  to figure out.  It's analogous to asking why a culinary school didn't teach its students the steps and ingredients to a specific recipe.  The school taught them about more general food preparation and food science skills so that they can figure out how to make a lot of specific recipes without much trouble.  They're also able to create their own recipes.So, do we want citizens with very specific skill sets that they need to get through day to day life or do we want citizens with critical thinking, problem solving, and other overarching cognitive skills that will allow them to easily acquire ANY simple, procedural skill they may come to need at any point in their lives?

I once got a chance to mentor this young 15 yo boy for 7 days (2 hours a week). He was from underprivileged background with very little means. His father is a low earning daily wager. But the boy is exceptional in his intelligence, manners and eloquence. His radiance was obvious and so we two got a quick click of chemistry. At the end of our mentoring program, he even did a parody of me (as part of an arranged tableau program). It made me love him even more, as I felt he noticed me with great attention.To my loveliest surprise, the boy broke the records of his neighborhood and scored the highest in his first board exams. And then he got the admission in the best college (for the 11th grade) of the biggest city in the country.Now he is preparing for the entrance tests in best universities in the country. The last point of the the page - advisor availability - is the one thing that is entirely outside of your control. There are only so many professors who can advise only so many students, and depending on who’s graduating, and which labs got their funding, even very capable students might not be accepted because there’s no room to adequately support them. It helps on the funding end immensely if you come with your own funding (i.e. fellowships), but you can’t control the comings and goings of people who are interested in different things.Did I mention that you should try to do research?
