Answer: Effective fall 2009, the Hazelwood Legacy Act (81st Texas legislature)allows veterans to transfer their unused Hazelwood hours (up to 150 SCH) to a child (stepchild, biological, adopted, or dependent for income tax purposes). A veteran cannot transfer his/her unused hours to a spouse; only to a child.

The Hazelwood Act exempts qualified veterans and dependent children of certain disabled or deceased veterans from specific tuition and fee charges at public institutions of higher education in the state of Texas. The exemption is for a maximum of 150 credit hours and may be awarded regardless of financial need.
