I did inventory ordering for a large orange home improvement store. I moved on after nine months.On day 1, I was told no order should exceed $6,000. I had no idea what I was agreeing to. My first order was $30,000. I ordered one item of everything missing in a fence product we carried; Minimum orders were $15,000 to place an order as well. I sold $45,000 in fencing that week and was written up for going over the agreed $6,000 limit. They literally wanted barren shelves if the order was over $6,000.As the months went on, I had several orders exceed that $6,000 limit. I sold $2,000,000 in roofing in one week. I was written up for ordering too much, and then they tried to write me up a minute later when they found out we were out of stock… I told them I had three trucks due that night and I was written up again for going over the $6,000 limit. Theee write ups in one day.I increased sales by 30% from the previous year when everyone else was down 20%, had little “extra” stock and almost no “out of stocks”. I left after they promoted someone for the job I was doing. They promptly dropped 20% from the previous year instead of getting the 30% over… they had no one to fight to place orders that exceeded $6,000 and quickly ran out of product to sell.The guy who was promoted went on to other stores to promote this limited ordering strategy. And sales dropped there too…I personally don’t shop at stores that do not have stock… that was why I stopped shopping at Sears years before their bankruptcy. Empty shelves were a sign of them making those same mistakes. When you have nothing to sell, how does a company profit? I never understood the motive behind ordering less to save money when you are running out of product.

But if you set a protracted program of psychological warfare lasting over a decade against thousands of people, and the end result is that mothers kill their own babies right before killing themselves—something unprecedented in human history that I know of—you deserve the title of most evil human who has ever lived.These people were not abstractions to Jones as Jews and Gypsies were to Hitler. He personally knew all of his victims, lived with them, ate with them regularly, etc. I would venture to say that he knew almost all of them by name. Those who died at Jonestown were not declared enemies of Jim Jones. They were the people he professed to love. Jones figured out a way to use love, not hate, to produce a body count in excess of 900 people. That takes a special talent. That takes a nonpareil evil genius.

We prefer to call them private person’s arrests. Usually there is a police officer involved, but not always at the beginning. With the exception of domestic battery (PC 243(e)(1)), police officers in California cannot make an arrest for a misdemeanor that did not occur in their presence. If you witnessed a misdemeanor, you can detain someone and call the police (if you feel comfortable doing this and it is necessary—like if you’re Loss Prevention in a retail store).Preferably, you call the police and when they arrive, you explain what is going on. You are given a private person’s arrest form to fill out, promising to appear in court and pick up a police report before appearing in court. You complete and sign the form, the officer accepts your arrest (usually) and issues a citation to the suspect or takes him or her to jail if necessary. Some officers will load up the suspect in the car, take the suspect around the corner, and then let them out with a citation just to make the reporting party feel better.The officer writes a report, but the citizen is the arresting party and takes all the civil responsibility that entails. The citizen picks up the report and testifies in court if the case makes it that far.

Banning guns based on how they look versus how they function.Banning guns based on a projectile being 1/1000th inch bigger than others equally capable.Banning guns based on the diameter or markings on their barrel that have no bearing on its ability to function.Making existing gun owners wait 8 days to take possession of a gun as a “cooling off” period.Banning possession of sheet metal or plastic boxes with springs because these, after all, are some of the most dangerous objects on the planet.Banning and not banning aforementioned boxes based on the number of rounds they hold but allowing the exact same box to be sold legally if it possesses the correct markings on the bottom.Having a one-gun-a-month law to prevent gun trafficking or straw purchases but allow anyone a lifetime waiver of that restriction by simply sending a form to the state saying they are a collector. Any reason for collecting is permissible (“In the event of a zombie apocalypse” is an acceptable reason).Where you live determines your ability to own a gun in the same state.Telling victims of home invasion they are to be arrested and treated as criminals because of the property someone else took from them.Being so concerned about privacy rights that you demand any would-be gun owner waive their HIPAA rights for life to make sure they aren’t “dangerous”.Declaring 18 through 20 year olds children and barring them from exercising their right to own a gun. But that’s the only right they are too immature or unable to exercise as a legal adult at those ages.Compiling lists of guns and gun owners in the utterly illogical belief that a couple pieces of paper solves crimes.Banning the publication of computer code or plans for firearms that are freely available in printed form without restriction. Hating two parts of the Bill of Rights is pretty impressive stuff.Demand that we have noise dampening devices on vehicles and hearing protection on around machinery that can damage hearing in an instant as a public safety measure but regulate the same for firearms to the point it takes 9–10 months and Federal and State permission to own. And not all states will allow you to protect your hearing.Requiring a person to be fingerprinted, photographed and provide a background check and at least two days of training at their own expense and submit the application within 3 days for a license to allow them to apply to purchase a handgun. It is not a “permit-to-possess” but merely a permission slip to fill out a form.Declaring that items meant to safely hold a firearm in order to use it are too dangerous to have fitted to a gun.Buttons are verboten.Changing the color or finish on a gun makes it illegal to sell as “unsafe”.Declaring any semi-automatic rifle an “assault rifle” regardless of age, caliber or feed type.Declaring a Marlin or equivalent tube-fed .22LR semi-auto rifle an “assault weapon”.Allowing anyone via hearsay to claim someone is suspicious or may have violent tendencies and have their guns taken away from them without Due Process.I can go on. And on and on. All strange and ones I could have never come up with on my own.Note for the Irony Challenged: Every single item on this list is an actual law or regulation in force today somewhere in the United States.

Gun control is based of an idea that less availability of guns -> less gun crime. Let’s leave aside the idea that measuring gun crime separately from all crime is an indirection designed to make gun control look supportable and assume that reducing gun crime is a laudable goal for some reason.Here are some facts:We have 300 million guns in the USA, and not nearly enough police to make sure none of them ever change hands illegally.Guns are home manufacturable with a cnc machineMost criminal things you would do with a gun are already illegal. Murder and assault. Some, particularly the mass shootings a lot of people care about are basically suicide missions.None of the laws proposed actually confiscate weapons, despite conservative outcry that that’s coming.So you have 300 million weapons, no plans to take them away from anyone. Even if you did, home manufacturing is never talked about and a likely alternative much the way that bootleg alcohol was and every drug in the war on drugs is. The whole “no one needs a ____” slogan is hard to apply to a CNC machine. How hard do you think it’s going to be for a would be mass shooter to find one of the owners of those 300 million guns who reviles gun control so much they’ll sell them an AR-15 under the table, or build them one? I would bet that it wouldn’t be that hard.This isn’t an endorsement of confiscation—I think that’ll cause way more problems than it’ll fix and way more people will die than currently die from mass shootings. I’m just saying that gun control is a flawed idea to begin with, and it only works in countries where the citizens didn’t care about guns much anyway, so in order to make gun control “work” they have to convince Americans not to *care* about guns. Despite their best social assaults, anti-gunners haven’t really changed the culture very much, and I don’t expect their current efforts to do much on that score. It’s just laughable to watch someone posture as all tough and angry like they have power over you and know they only have mean looks and snide comments to back it up. Occasionally they’ll show you a graph that seems interesting if you don’t think critically about it. It’s just not enough to get someone to forsake their right to self defense over. Until they manage to do that, gun control will always be ineffective.

Prison food tastes good. It gets a bad rap and I don’t know why. They provide a balanced diet that meets all nutritional requirements. When the minimum requirements are only 1500 calories a day, food starts to taste better.The first meal is often given away. If not all of it, at least a portion. New guys don’t realize that everything has value. Nor do they realize just how hungry they may get in the days and weeks to come.It’s a shock to the system. Some people eat toothpaste to get by and others pull stuffing out of their mattress and try to eat that.So when it comes time to eat, people can hardly wait. The most disciplined always save some for later.First thing they told me was to accept the change.“It’s going to feel like you’re starving, but you aren’t. Once your stomach gets acclimated to the portions, you’ll be okay.”We always saved the hard boiled egg for lunch. They provide a breakfast bar at about 3 am that is marketable. It’s like cash. Save one or save 10, that bar is always an easy trade. I could get two eggs for that bar and usually did.At lunch we get a sandwich with turkey or bologna. There’s juice and one piece of fruit. Lastly a small portion of celery and carrots.We sit down and make a spread. The eggs get chopped up and mixed in with top ramen noodles. We only use noodles and not the broth. in fact, we cook the noodles bland and then drain the water. Then we add the flavoring direct.We mix eggs, meat, carrots and celery. Add some mayo and mustard. Keep mixing and guys throw in more. Maybe some cheese sauce from the commissary. Maybe some jalapenos.We take those two pieces of bread and use this spread to make a wrap. It always get rolled like a burrito and never stacked like a sandwich.That’s a bigtime lunch that costs about a dollar and it does taste good. We’re all in it together and that’s good too because generosity shifts.A good contribution can get you in with a good group of guys. Having nothing can keep you on the outs.Oh yeah, they give us two cookies for lunch. It makes for a nice chaser.Quality is relative to availability and prisons don’t buy organic. They won’t provide corn fed beef and if your expectations are that high, realize that quality has a new ceiling.A big portion of top ramen spread and good friends all around - I liked that part. It was good fun and once and I said, “think what we could make on the outside…”Then Brandon said, “We tried it on the outside. It’s not the same. This stuff only tastes good in jail.”People complain about prison food and jail food, but when you see guys eating stuffing from a mattress, those meals they are serving don’t look so bad. Then you find ways to make them better and it’s still punishment, but feels less taxing.A little bit better is always nicer than a little bit worse.So don’t compare it to what you ate on the outside.Compare it to what you ate yesterday and see if you can improve on it.More calories and better flavor are out there, you’ve just got to learn how to find them.

I retired essentially one year early because I was fed up with the way law enforcement was being treated in general in the country, and in CA especially. At the time I retired, I was facing no disciple and my past evaluations, (going back many years) were all “outstanding”, the highest rating possible. I mention this so you will know I didn’t “retire in lieu of being fired” as sometimes occurs. When I say “one year early” I just mean our pension formula maxes out for age at 55 and I was 54 when I retired. After that, the formula increases by 2.62 percent a year for longevity, and I get a 2 percent COLA so working after 55 doesn’t really net me anything..Anyway, the “war on cops” is a real thing. The amount of senseless paperwork has only increased. When we arrest and book someone now, we have to fill out a form as to wether the arrestee, after being bailed out, would care to voluntarily extend his/her time in jail. How ridiculous. “Sir, after you’re free to leave our jail, would you like to stay in jail instead? You can let us know when you want to leave.” The clearance form on the computer after self initiated activity used to be half a page. Now it’s several pages long. They have to capture more info to comply with a CA law against “racial profiling”. Chicago PD wound up having to fill out a similar form resulting in much less self initiated field activity. No surprise, shootings and murders are running at record high levels there. The crime rate in LA will go up as well.. Thanks to new laws in CA (prison “realignment”, Prop 47 etc) tens of thousands of felons are back on the streets to commit new crimes. If you think they won’t, you’re naive and don’t work in the criminal justice system. Previous felony level crimes are now classified as misdemeanors. There is now “misdemeanor theft auto” in CA. In LA county, due to jail overcrowding, most misdemeanors now go unpunished. Shoplifters can no longer be arrested for burglary as in the past (if intent to steal prior to entry could be established). Shoplifting items with a value of $950 is no longer punished. Felony drug possession of cocaine, heroin, and (personal use) are now misdemeanors. Cops aren’t wasting their time much anymore arresting people for mere heroin possession. No, I’m not kidding. Our department, as huge as it is, is short around 2,000 deputies resulting in mandatory overtime. This includes “drafting” deputies working the current shift and holding them over to work the next shift because we would otherwise be falling below minimum staffing in the field (same occurs in the jail system). Detectives are forced to work shifts back in patrol cars in lieu of their regular duties resulting in less time spent working cases. You can bet they aren’t too motivated when they work a patrol car at this point.There are tons of homeless people in LA. Many (possibly most?) have some form of mental illness. They also enter Starbucks and create disturbances and throw rocks at passing cars, necessitating a call to law enforcement. How would you like to deal with a rock throwing mentally ill transient on an almost daily basis? If you hurt him, you’ll be reviled for not being compassionate to a mentally ill poor person. So, you know, keep that in mind. After you 5150 him (psych hold) he’ll be back on the street in a matter of days if not hours. Due to laws that make CA a beacon for the homeless, the homeless population is swelling, increasing calls from storeowners and increasing the likelihood we’ll have to come in conflict with them. (restaurants for some reason don’t like the homeless using the side wall of their store as a latrine, and don’t care for the needles and condoms left on the sidewalk in front of their business…go figure..but it’s not PC to complain about them for large proportions of Californians..cops are caught in the middle)I could go on for many pages. I’ll stop here. The men and women of the LASD do an incredible job, all the more impressive considering the headwinds they face. I truly miss my coworkers. I’m glad to be out of CA however. It’s only going to get worse before it gets better.
