That is, an individual who violates the rules in casting a vote themselves. This can be someone who is not authorized to vote at all but does so; or someone who is authorized to vote, but does so multiple times, and/or in places other than where they are authorized to do so; or someone who casts a vote in someone else’s name, etc.Now this is a problem with voting systems, and generally makes little or no difference except in very rare case of extremely close elections—so primarily is going to have little or no impact outside local elections.In order to have any serious impact, you’d have to have a large number of voters committing fraud in a systematic fashion, which is hard to pull off on the quiet. Not that it never happens, but it is difficult, expensive, and the larger the attempt, the higher the chances of getting caught.Now, Election Fraud is a larger category, which can include organized large scale voter fraud. But it also includes other forms of fraudulently influencing an election—and it is much more common, and much more effective, than simple voter fraud.It includes hacking voting machines, stuffing ballot boxes, fraudulent vote counting, mass de-registration of eligible voters, mass registration of ineligible voters, all sorts of funny business with absentee ballots, and so on.My personal experience—and one of the most egregious cases of mass election fraud I’ve come across—happened in 1995/96. I had just come back from overseas (I was in the Army), where I had been voting via absentee ballot for the past 6 years in my home of record (NC). I came back to the States, and got involved with a congressional campaign, in which a retired Army Col. was running to unseat an incumbent congresscritter who’d held the office for over 20 years, and iirc had essentially inherited the seat from his father who’d held it for 20 some years previously, etc.During this election, I served as a poll watcher, and personally observed vans pull up outside the polling place, poll workers bring handfuls of ballots to the van, and then be handed stacks of filled out ballots to put into the boxes—the received ballots having obviously been pre-marked, as the handoff literally happened in seconds. I later watched thru the locked doors after the polls closed (and poll watchers were illegally forced outside during the count), as poll workers “re-marked” ballots and ran them thru the ballot counters again.Poll workers from other precincts reported identical activities at their precincts.Also, deputies picked up ballot boxes at several precincts at the close of business (around 8PM) and then disappeared with the ballot boxes until they finally showed up at the central elections point at 0130AM. Sometimes with more boxes than they had left with.I showed up to vote in the precinct I had been registered and voting in (by absentee ballot) for the past 6 years, and found that I could not vote because my name had been removed from the registry.The campaign I worked on had spent great time and effort registering people to vote—and on the day of the election, literally 800+ people whose registrations had been submitted well before the deadline found they had been removed from the rolls.We found, upon looking at the records of people who had voted in each precinct in the district, MANY people who had pretty obviously voted in multiple precincts under different versions of their own name.We found 14 pages of people who were pretty obviously deceased (all with birthdays prior to 1910, one who was born in 1870), who had registered and voted that year (these were all new registrations—no telling how many dead folks hadn’t been removed from the rolls).We had affidavits from people who showed up to vote and found someone had already voted in their name.We had one affidavit from someone who showed up to vote, and was asked why they didn’t come in to vote with their daughter. When she told them her daughter had moved out of state several years ago, she was told her daughter had voted earlier that day in that precinct (obv. someone had voted in her daughter’s name).By the end of OUR investigation, we had a double-stack of loose-leaf binders FULL of affidavits and accounts of cases of blatant voter and elections fraud. We submitted these to the US House of Representatives, and the NC State Bureau of Investigation, and the FBI, conducted an investigation, which found, in their words: “Wide spread evidence of serious voter and elections fraud.”Which was followed by their suggestion as to what steps ought to be taken next: “Do nothing.”Can you guess what the House did in response to the evidence?Hint: It wasn’t Something.Add to this the fact that it turns out the candidates home of record was Alexandria, VA—so not even in the state (you don’t have to live in the district you represent, but you do have to live in the state)—and so far as we could tell, the congresscritter didn’t own or lease any home in the state.When I first came back to the States, I heard many of the folks in the party complaining about the corruption. I was young and naive, and I literally said: “I’m sure there’s some corruption on all sides, but it’s all exaggerated.”Oh boy was I wrong.I learned in that election.BTW: I was actually brought into the campaign I worked on because they suspected the campaign office was bugged, and I had some experience with surveillance equipment. And they were correct—we found the office was bugged.Not to mention the County Sheriff’s Dept. engaged in wide-spread intimidation against the campaign workers. But that’s another aspect of the story altogether.So don’t believe the folks who investigate themselves and then tell you “No, it’s a myth—we don’t do anything wrong.”Safest bet: Assume EVERY election is a sham.

There was no requirement that I had to be “on duty” to fly armed. If I was on leave and I wanted to carry, I didn’t need a reason to do so.Technically, you’re not required to fly armed if you are “off duty,” but you are highly encouraged to do it. And while we are on the subject of being “on duty/off duty,” it’s a concept that is generally met with contempt among FBI Agents, especially among the tactics and firearms instructors. The mentality is, as an FBI Agent, you are never really off duty. One of my firearms and tactics instructors would constantly beat into our brains the awful scenario of leaving our service weapon at home if we were to go out to the movies and find ourselves in an Aurora-like situation, or worse, be on an airplane and encounter one like 9/11. Talk about regret.Ok, back to air travel. I’m not going to lie - it was a great perk being able to fly armed. No lines. No metal detectors. It was very easy traveling. There were a couple of other perks to flying armed, too, but I’m not going to list them because they will probably just piss you off.But with all those perks came an immense amount of responsibility.Many times, I found myself on planes where there were no Air Marshals and neither of the pilots were armed. If stuff were to hit the fan, it would be on me to make sure it didn’t go badly.So before I boarded the plane, I took stock of who my fellow travelers were going to be. Who could be a potential problem? And if there was a problem and I needed some help, who would be a good candidate to back me up?I didn’t do any sleeping, either. At least I did my best not to. Whatever security inconveniences I was able to bypass, they were pretty much offset by the need for me to be “on” for the duration of the flight.Looking back on it, I think the most difficult part of flying armed was trying to conceal all of that gear around my waist when I had to get my carry-on up into the overhead compartment. I tried to keep my badge as close to my gun as I could so if people saw the gun they would hopefully put 2 and 2 together and not freak out.
