Full disclosure:  this advice comes from when I applied in 2007.   Perhaps some aspects of the process have changed, but that would  surprise me quite a bit.When they say you should address the two merit review criteria of "Intellectual Merit" and "Broader Impacts," they really mean it!After applying, you get to see the rating forms filled out by the three people that reviewed your application.  At least when I applied, the form consisted of two sets of check boxes: one for the "Overall Assessment of Intellectual Merit" and one for the "Overall Assessment of Broader Impacts."  They check one of "Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, or Poor" for each criteria.  They then write 2-3 sentences explaining their score.  As far as I can tell, whether you get the fellowship or not depends entirely on your scores on these sheets.  I know people who scored 5 "Excellent" and 1 "Very good" responses received the fellowship my year; I seem to recall people receiving 4 "Excellent" and 2 "Very Good" did not.The reviewers are likely reading hundreds of these applications over a weekend, and for every application they have to find something to say about the two merit review criteria.  If you yourself tell them exactly how you fulfill those criteria, they will often take your explanation and paraphrase it into the text box that they have to fill as explanation for their score.  If you don't explicitly address the criteria, they will have to really ask themselves how you satisfy the criteria, and they may not rate you as highly if they can't explicitly see how you are meeting the criteria.  I would strongly recommend trying to discuss the merit criteria in all 3 of the required essays.  You can even explicitly talk about "Intellectual Merit" and "Broader Impacts" to make it even easier for your reviewers to find.

Security online (or lack thereof) can be a big factor in putting people off following through with a sign-up or purchase and so lending them this helping hand to show them how strong their password is will give a sense of safety and satisfaction.Overall field validation - When a field has been successfully completed, it is highlighted with a green outline to validate this clearly. It’s a nice way of giving the customer a sense of completion and closure for each step and letting them see their progress - this type of positive reinforcement can be useful in encouraging people to see through the sign-up process until the end.Clear indication of errors - Equally, it’s important to clearly notify customers when there is an issue with one of their completed fields. There’s nothing more frustrating than spending time filling out a form only for it to refuse to submit but with no clear identification of where the error is. If you really think you can do it yourself, use a flat fee listing service and get it on the MLS. Don't list if for sale by owner or you will field 20 calls a day from agents trying to list your house. Make sure to take good pictures and get the clutter out. Be prepared for things to get messy. You must keep track of deadlines and be a good negotiator. Will you be prepared if the buyer backs out or tries to renegotiate the deal after inspections? How are you determining the price? Have you sold a house before and do you know how the process works? You are also taking on a lot of liability without a broker. You will need to fill out disclosure forms etc. on your own.The biggest issues I see are bad or no pictures, no return calls for showings, and the price is too high for the value. You will also want to offer a buyer's commission or risk no one wanting to show your house. Buyers will not want to pay the agent's commission so you will severely limit your market if you don't.If your house is priced right you will get a lot of calls for showings so make sure you have the time to answer calls all day.

I'm a hacker who served 4.5 months of a 9 month sentence 5 years ago. I was in two jails in that time, spending the majority of the time in the second, lower security place. The experience totally changed me, but in a positive way.First of all, I actually had a lot of fun in jail. My education made certain aspects of the prison system very easy for me to navigate, such as legal documentation and debating with guards. My ability to mend broken electronics very quickly became known. These things made me feel very safe, since people were actively protecting me. It also made me feel quite important in the community.It started when someone came to me and asked what I knew about mending mobile phones. In UK jails, many people have mobiles, usually obtained by over-the-fence smuggling. Pay-as-you-go credit vouchers are a major form of currency. This guy was very important on the wing - he had a crew of other guys who walked around with him and people often came to pay him. I said I knew enough about phones, and what did he want? He explained that someone had owed him money but couldn't pay. He'd taken the guy's phone as payment, but the phone was pin-locked and he couldn't get in. The phone was an old Samsung, one which I knew (having previously owned one) didn't impose any limit on the number of pin attempts. So I told the guy: yeah, I know a few tricks. But I need to get my tools out so I'll do it overnight. (Note: I didn't have any tools). The guy left me with the phone overnight, and I sat up through the night to try all 10,000 possible 4-digit combinations. Thankfully, the correct code turned up in the mid 2000s. So the next day this guy turned up and was amazed that I had figured out the code. He went round telling everyone that I was some tech wizard and that people should always come to me with their problems. In return for the job he arranged for me to have a Playstation 2 in my cell for two weeks, and to get access to a phone whenever I wanted. For the rest of my time, people would bring me trivially broken electronics and I would retire for the evening to make it out like I was doing something difficult, then return the fixed item the next day. It massively increased my quality of life in there.Secondly, it opened my eyes to how people less fortunate than me live their lives, and how terrible the prison system is for most people. Many, many people in jail were severely mentally ill. There was no support for them. Some were killed in jail, either by inmates or staff, because they flipped out and people got scared. Another large group of people were hopelessly addicted to very harmful drugs. People who exploited this group were the most powerful - they would have drugs smuggled in, then build an army of addicts who would do their bidding to get the next fix. It was a really explosive situation. Almost every act of violence was drug debt related. Immigrants were completely screwed in jail, because there was no way for them to navigate the bureaucracy. I helped several people avoid deportation, including one cell-mate who had a hit contract out on him in Jamaica because he defended his business when yardies tried to extort him. He couldn't read or write, so he couldn't fill out the asylum application. His patois was so strong that his lawyer couldn't really understand what he said, and the border agency was going to send him back to Jamaica to be killed. I wrote letters to the border agency, the prison governor and the home secretary and he was granted asylum and an interpreter was arranged so that his legal visits would be more productive. Hundreds of others in similar situations go without that help every year.Thirdly, I saw some horrible things. For example: 'syruping' - when someone mixes sugar into a bucket of boiling water and dumps it on someone's face. The dissolved sugar makes the boiling water cling to the skin longer, and the skin peels off leaving the raw flesh exposed. I also saw someone held down by four guys, who performed anal surgery on him with a sharpened spoon to extract drugs he was hiding. He later maimed all four of his assailants, stabbing them in the neck with a pen (saw that too). Another was a guy who was clearly paranoid schizophrenic. His cell was opposite mine. He started screaming one night and barricaded himself in. He then stripped off and covered himself with baby oil, and started setting fire to his cell. The guards came in riot gear to tackle him, but he was so slippery it was like trying to catch an eel. He gave them the run around for quite a while before they eventually held him down and injected him* and he was carried away screaming. He died in hospital.Fourthly, I felt so ashamed of myself that I changed my life forever. I was a middle class white kid with a great education who got obsessed with hacking and document security as a teenager and went down for figuring out how to replicate the driving license, thus throwing away many of the advantages that luck, society and my parents had given me. Everyone else in there had no such advantages. Most of them were born to a life where poverty, drugs, violence and lack of education all being concentrated in their environment led to them being systematically channeled into prison. I was there essentially through misplaced intellectual curiosity, while others were there because their lives were so bad out of jail that crime was actually a rational survival choice. Society failed them, while it tried to hold me up with both hands. I was, and am, disgusted with myself. Upon leaving jail I learned programming, worked freelance to pay for my tuition while I got a degree, got a PhD position, and am now working towards spending my life using my skills as efficiently as I can to improve the lives of as many people as possible. If I ever have a lazy moment, I just have to cast my mind back to prison, and the disgust with myself rises up again, and I launch myself back into work with an energy I never knew I had before prison.Finally, I would say that my criminal record has not held me back. I no longer have to legally disclose it**, but when I did I always did so with a letter explaining some of the circumstances and how deeply it had affected my life. I had several positive comments about my disclosure, and I have never been turned down for a job I've applied for. It doesn't have to hold you back - your attitude has to convince a potential employer that your background makes you a great candidate, not a worse one.*This has been corrected: In my haste to write the post I previously wrote that a dart was used, when in fact it was a needle. Thanks to Marty Bee for pointing out that this was not likely.**For those who are curious, a conviction becomes 'spent' in the UK after a certain time. The times were recently reduced in a little publicised law (Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012), so my conviction was 'spent' after 48 months.

First, don't overspend for your neighborhood. If you're in a neighborhood of 50,000 dollar houses, sorry, you can't spend 40 grand on a kitchen. It won't return as much as it costs. Don't aim to be the most expensive house on the street.Second, the highest returns will be on fixing flaws. If the house is pretty nice except it still has granny's 1959 kitchen that's where you spend. If your neighborhood has high parking demand and you only have one space, look to double the driveway, add to the garage, or add a pull-off. If there is no dishwasher that's a flaw. No over the stove microwave, flaw. Window ac instead of central, flaw.Third, maybe the flaw isn't fixable, like being on a noisy road or next to a fast food joint. At least diminish it, like triple-pane windows on that side, a berm, a fence, and/or bushes. If you have a yard where grass doesn't grow, switch to a low water landscape plan that doesn't use grass. Diminished flaw.Fourth, first impressions count. The front entrance should be boldly colored, attracting the eye. It should be widely framed, well-lighted, and easy to approach. The front door lock should be smooth and easy to operate. Remember that the showing agent will be keying in through that door. The driveway and sidewalk should be powerwashed. Landscaping should make the yard look big, no clutterFifth, the thing that always adds way more value than cost is paint, inside and out. Make an empty canvas with your paint with very light shades and completely white ceilings. The art and furnishings are the color not the walls.Sixth, finished basements don't pay. They have low ceilings, inadequate windows, noisy mechanicals, and most people after spending money on finished basements discover they barely use them, too dark and too separate from the main quarters. The exceptions are if you are fixing the flaw of way too little square footage, have a walk-out basement with daylight windows, or can add a bath, kitchen, and outside entrance for a Mother-in-law type or even legal separate unit. Mostly I like a very light finish in basements. Just make the space bright, clean, and very sparsely furnished. A big empty space is appealing to buyers. They can imagine their own use. Don't clutter it with a pool or ping pong table. Maybe lay down a light colored rug but not wall to wall carpeting. If the house has the flaw of too few bedrooms then finishing half the basement might pay. You might need to dig out a window well to be an emergency egress, otherwise by building code it's not a bedroom. Besides then you have some natural light.Seventh, don't exceed conforming use. If most houses in the neighborhood are three bedroom then paying for a fourth bedroom adds less than its cost, and adding a fifth is so non-conforming it adds 1/10 the cost of building it. The exceptions are when you get it cheap. Say for example you are building a detached two car garage (in part because nearly all your neighbors have large garages and yours only has a small one car attached. That's a flaw. See number two above.). Turning the old garage into a bedroom cheaply could add more than it costs. If you are in a two bed house in a three bed neighborhood you are fixing a flaw, see number two above.If you are in an affluent area of 3000 sf homes and you have 1900 sf then an addition could pay, but you don’t have to go big. Get up to 2500. I’ve been in big houses with tons of wasted space, little hallways here, there, everywhere. It’s ok to trail the average a little. Be efficient.Eighth, a “light” remodel can do wonders. Maybe in a bathroom after painting I’ll replace a faucet, the curtain rod with one of those curved ones, and the light fixture with a multiple bulb LED. It’s not a gut-to-the-studs renovation, but it can freshen up the space considerably.Ninth, perception is value. For example I personally don't think radon is near as dangerous as most people do, but I know their perception affects value. So when buying a house I test for radon, get a clause in the contract, and do the mitigation. I know I'm going to sell some day. Those that perceive a problem will let it affect their desire to buy and willingness to pay more. I'd rather nip that in the bud so when they test for radon it comes in below the 3.9 pico-curie action level. Flaw fixed. For the same reason I remove lead pipes and buried oil tanks. When I go to fill out the seller's disclosure form when it comes to lead pipes and oil tanks I check the box no. Flaw fixed.Things that make it more saleable add value. If it’s appealing that’s value.Also if by clever decorating you can make a space "feel" bigger then that's perception. It works on real estate brokers and appraisers too. There's room for subjective shading adjusting values for the CMA.Tenth, value is determined by buyers not sellers. If you have a pencil to sell and ten possible buyers in front of you then the value is whichever buyer will pay the most. If you have one hundred buyers then whoever among them willing to pay the most determines the value. If your pencil is odd, like a strange color or only is comfortable for lefties, such that nine of ten buyers would reject it then you have a non-conforming property that will take longer to sell and get less money.There is no absolute value. If you spend 40 grand on a stupidly designed kitchen you can't hold a gun to the buyer's head and demand your money back. You have to be smart but humble, with understated style, conservative (but not cheap) in spending on improvements, and put yourself in the buyer's shoes.All the advice above is pretty standard stuff. Most good appraisers and brokers will agree, but I do want to add one little thing that's different. I like a little hook, something memorable. If a couple of transferrees are being squired around to ten houses on a Saturday by a rookie agent I want them to remember my house for something interesting or amusing, a theme perhaps, like dolphins, an interesting piece of art, a water effect in the yard, or just anything that'll make them say something like The House with all the Pumpkins instead of 123 South Maple Avenue. I was selected for a summer internship 2016.I tried to be very open while filling the preference form: I choose many products as my favorite products and I said I'm open about the team I want to join.I even was very open in the  location and start date to get host matching interviews (I negotiated the start date in the interview until both me and my host were happy.) Of course you have to study that before the interview. Take as long time as you need if you feel rusty. It takes some time to get ready for the host matching (it's less than the technical interview)  but it's worth it of course.
