Not only can their property be damaged but they also run the risk of other tenants becoming angry and taking it out on the landlord. In some cities, it's also the landlord who's held liable for laws that are being broken, which means the landlord is the one who's fined.It's not illegal in some cities to do what you're describing (in NYC, for instance, renting a room out is legal for <30 days if the tenant is also there the entire time). But that isn't the same thing as getting your landlord’s permission.If you want to do something that's legal without permission, check your lease to see if you're allowed to do it.
