I often wonder how people come up with these ‘how much…’ and ‘how many…’ type questions when the answer so obviously depends on HOW BIG something is or some other totally variable item.Simply stated, Fire Trucks have fuel tanks that carry ‘as many gallons of fuel’ as the ordering department request. And/or as many as the chassis is built to carry. And/or about 16 (pick a number that is more than 12) operating hours at full throttle. A ‘mini-pumper/attack pumper’ Type 3 I used to crew had a 25 gallon tank; a 1500 GPM Type 1 (full-sized, urban service) engine had a 90 gallon tank; a 2500 Gallon Tender Type 1 (tandem-axle tanker) had a 75 gallon tank; a A/S 32 P-2 Crash fire truck (FWD chassis, 8-wheel drive, two Continental 340hp gas engines, water and foam carried on board, 66,800 pounds fully loaded) had a 120 gallon tankFew fire trucks pump for more than 12 hours without service by the mechanics; larger fires and operations usually have mechanics and fuel deliveries as a part of their logistics plan.

Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed. In my area, few towns have hydrants. While there are two hydrants near us, along the pipeline from a reservoir to the city a few miles away, it isn’t enough to cover the entire area.We primarily rely on tanker shuttles or long stretches of large diameter supply line to keep the water flowing.This is relay pumping, drawing water from a river and pumping it to another fire engine, in this case about 800′ away.This is drafting from a drop tank, basically a 2000 gallon collapsible swimming pool.This picture (not mine, pulled from the internet) is a tanker dumping.So, to answer the specifics of your question, trucks are kept full at all times. At a fire scene, the water on board the trucks is used for the initial attack, then we switch to water supplied by tank trucks or relayed by a large hose from another truck drafting from a river, lake or the ocean, or even from one of the few hydrants in the area if we’re close enough.When we haven’t had enough rain, such as this year, some of the water supplies we use may be too low to draft from, so we always have a secondary source in mind. So far, we have had a few streams get low, but have always been able to draft from a lake or reservoir. Since we are located on the coast, we also have the option of drafting seawater. Seawater is corrosive, but can be used if all the hose and appliances are flushed with fresh water after the fire.When the demand at the fire is low, the operator will use some of the water to refill the tank on the fire engine. That gives us a reserve if the supply from the tankers or relay is interrupted. At the end of the fire, when water is no longer needed to fight fire, all tanks are topped off before the water supply operation is terminated. That the responsibility of the pump operators, and the incident commander.If the water being used for firefighting isn’t what we’d like to keep in the tanks, such as seawater, muddy or swampy water, then the engines will drive to the hydrant, and refill there with clean, treated water.
