Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed. I’m a child of the 90s.When I was a young lad going to school, there was little in the way of “how to motivate kids to take on challenges”.I mean, there was definitely literature around…but it wasn’t widespread.Many of the teachers saw some kids as “lost causes” when it came to specific subjects and just did enough to get them to “pass” to the next grade without learning the fundamentals of that specific subject. If you struggle with basic Math as an adult, you know where I’m coming from.In the early 2000s, that started to shift a bit with the rise of the Internet, but it wasn’t enough. Many people still believed that “you either had it or you didn’t”.That’s the old, industrial economy paradigm. Here’s the updated 21st century version.Over the past several years we have made tremendous progress into the areas of overall mind-body improvement and optimization. We know a substantial amount more about how the brain works, how motivation works, and more importantly - how we learn and take on new challenges.The most basic explanation is this: you learn and change by increments.Every step towards the person you want to become in a certain area must be done sequentially and it must build off of the foundations before it.For example: if you want to become a yoga master, you don’t start off doing crazy vinyasa yoga. Each time you do it, you have to flex less, until it becomes second nature. For some people, even opening up the Math book to do practice problems is a flex of willpower. For some people, just walking into a crowded venue with strangers is a flex of willpower. You need to have enough mental fortitude to override your sense of dread in both of these situations, which is an entire topic of itself.Don’t Fear Failure - You will fall flat on your face several times in the pursuit of greatness in a specific area. You will get several problems wrong. You will look like a fool in front of the people you try to woo. This is part of the learning process.Post-Game Analysis - This is where many people go wrong. They never assess their performance. It’s one thing to try something twice and it ending up in failure, it’s another thing to try it 3 times. Where did you go wrong? How can you improve? What needs to go better the next time? Where in the chain was your weakest link?Work the Weaknesses - Here’s another area where people go wrong - they only focus on their strengths, not their weaknesses. When it comes to working out, people capitalize on their strengths, not their weaknesses. That’s why they never see any progress over time.Refine, Refine, Refine - After a while (if you’ve done this process right), what was once a monster task is now second nature. This is where you start focusing on improving the quality of every step in the chain. For example, a basketball player who can shoot free throws may focus on shooting at different angles, under pressure, or at different ranges. If you lift weights, maybe you focus on lifting a smaller amount of weight the next time or your form. Either way, you have to get even a tiny bit better than you were the last time.That’s how gains are made. They aren’t made by doing a burst of activity, then burning out.
