While you watch, every second, there are millions of pixels lighting up your screen with high-definition images with rich stereo sound, both coded with billions of bits streaming to you through the internet. Mobile devices, smart TVs, and easy access to high-speed internet have made this all seem common. Trivial, even. But the magic of how these images and sounds are coming to you, instantly, just about anywhere, is a pretty incredible feat of engineering. The technology has become so commonplace that the appearance of a buffering symbol, even on mobile internet, is considered a failure of the streaming service.
