Waiters waiting for a tip of their preferenceThere was this hotel in Andheri East near the station in Mumbai,India. It was during an afternoon of March 2012, when I was coming out of the coaching class and heading to take my lunch from any restaurant I could find. So I headed out to this one restaurant that serves a regular thaali and south indian dishes. I was drooling over for a masala dosa so enquired of they are serving the dish for lunch. Once confirming I booked a seat in this restuarant and waited for a waiter to take the order. This one guy attends to me and he looked quite distracted with chaos around the restaurant with many coming possibly being lunch time of the day. I had to reiterate my order to him that included the dish, juice and other side items shown in the menu. He took the order, however it took me an rough 40 minutes to get my dish served on my table. This waiter went one dish at a time to serve by placing on my table and heading back to the kitchen to get another. So it takes another 7 minutes and I finally have all I needed. I was so caught up by the chaos and the delay that I took it real slow to complete my lunch. Once done, I immediately signalled for the Bill. As the bill arrives I left a change of 40 INR as a tip and paid the bill, whilst I had seen two other customers putting a couple of 10s and leaving. I thought that atleast the lunch was great and probably the waiter was having a rough time. But to my surprise, the waiter was observing at a distance and rushes to me as I stand up to leave saying “Sahab, sau rupiye toh dho, aaj bahut bheed hai, itne se kya hoga” - Sir , please tip 100 INR as its a crowded time, what will I do with this you have given ? I was like out of courtesy I paid to this much else I would be like others giving 10s and you are asking this much. He starts to act wierd and pitch in the status quo, saying that most “rich” folks should be courteous enough to pay more, as he thinks I look well off , being properly dressed with college bag. The problem he thinks I may belong to the rich families affording to go to college or pay heavy tuition fees, so he can bargain for more. Well I like to dress nicely but I am not from any rich bckground but understanding how things are for such work life as a waiter, I atleast showed some gesture this time. So we go back and forth speaking on status, philiosphy and by them I just stormed out leaving the 40 INR change. I felt it was unethical as if a customer gives you a tip, you graciously accept or decline, either in their presence or absence. I would not appreciate to argue or be adamant to demand more, provided the bill already covers your restaurants services and VAT. I felt strange, however this was just that one incident.

Caution: Lengthy answer ahead:I was lucky enough to be selected by Indigo (a major low cost carrier in India) as a junior first officer in August 2017 after clearing about 5 rounds worth of their selection process. Now, the exact and rounds process may vary from airline to airline but the essence is the same throughout the industry. Now remember that the process that I'll describe is for a fresher in the industry, i.e. Non Type Rated CPL holder. If you're an experienced pilot with lots of hours, the process may be different for you. I'll elaborate on indigo's process and provide details about other airlines' process too wherever I can.Round 1 - Technical written examThis is the first round for almost all airlines' selection process in India. There are 120 odd multiple choice questions based on topics like aerodynamics, jet engines, performance, meteorology, air navigation, regulations , etc etc. Though the questions are multiple choice, they're not objective questions. Some of them (numericals) need to be calculated and marked accordingly.Indigo's first round was on pen and paper with an OMR sheet being provided. It was the same with Vistara, a full service airline in India. Spicejet (another low cost carrier) had this round on computer screens.Round 2 & 3 - CASS and PsychometryCASS, in my opinion, is a test of your presence of mind, multi tasking skills, and stress management. You'll be in a room with 5 computer screens. 3 of them will be in front of you, combined, and 1 each on either side. On the 3 screens in front, you'll be playing (almost) a computer game on which you'll be flying an aircraft with the help of a joystick. No technicalities, it's pretty easy to handle. You'll be following instructions which will be given to you through headsets. At the same time, you'll be solving some problems on the screens to your left and right. Problems based on mental math, memory, logical reasoning etc. You'll also be given a 4 digit pin to remember right at the beginning of the session, and you'll be asked questions about the pin (sum of digits etc) during your session. You'll also have to look out for traffic, follow instructions, and fly the aircraft safely while doing all this. The entire session lasts for about an hour.After the session is over, you'll have a debrief in which you'll be asked to rate your performance, tell them about what went wrong, why it went wrong, and what you could've done to do things better.A few days after CASS (can be done before as well) you'll have to fill out an online psychometric form. 160 odd questions to get to know you better. Then you'll have a Skype interview with a psychologist (I think) from the UK and this will last for about 50–60 minutes where you'll have to open up and be completely honest about the questions they ask you. Some of the questions could be based on the psychometric form you filled out so make sure you fill it yourself and you fill it honestly. There are no right or wrong answers. It's just to know you as a person.Other airlines may conduct a COMPASS test which is also to check your multi tasking skills and stress management abilities.Round 4 & 5 - Group activity and Personal Interview (GA/PI)Congratulations on getting this far. Last few steps now.You could have your GA and PI on the same day or consecutive days. In the group activity, you'll be put in a room with 4 other people and 3–4 moderators who'll be judging you. Now remember, it's a group activity, not a group discussion. So you 5 will be given a scenario on which you all have to work together. Showcase your leadership skills here but do not be overly dominant. Work as a team. Work the problem. If you're not able to, tell the moderators at the end of the activity what didn't work and why it didn't work. The session lasts for about 30 minutes.The personal interview. This is your chance to leave a last impression on the panel. The interview is a mix of technical and HR. On the panel will normally be a couple of senior captains and one person from the HR department. That doesn't mean that the captains can't ask you HR based questions. You require adequate technical knowledge and a good personality with confidence and passion to clear this round. Do not, for one second, think that you can fool the panel in any way. They're probably in this industry since before you were born. They will catch you.Get one more thing straight - knowing the A-Z of Aviation will not get you a job. Even if you know the A-J, but have a willingness to learn, a positive attitude, and you're ready to accept when you're wrong and not argue unnecessarily, you'll make the cut. Smile, be confident, be courteous, and think twice before you speak. You'll not get this opportunity again for a long time.The interview could last anywhere between 10 minutes to an hour. Don't judge the interview based on how long it lasted. My interview lasted for 50 minutes. My friend's lasted for 10. We both cleared.The results are declared within 10 odd days via email.I hope I've been of some help. Getting transcripts from Delhi University may seem like a challenge if not properly informed. Fortunately, it is possible to get the official transcripts at your home address by applying online without having to visit the college. You just have to fill one form, pay the online fee, and send the copies of necessary documents. Once your documents signNow the Examination Branch, it takes a minimum of 10 working days to prepare the transcripts.However, please note that this is possible only if you have the copies of the following mandatory documents.1. Copy of all Mark sheets (All Semesters/Years)2. Copy of Syllabus: The Examination Branch needs a copy of syllabus to verify your Paper details. If you are a recent pass out, your syllabus will be available on the DU website under the Syllabi section. If you can’t find your syllabus online and had passed out some years back, you can get it in your college library. For this, you’ll have to go to the college library or ask someone else to do it on your behalf. The syllabus must have the details of all the papers for all years/semesters.3. Pay the online fee:Depending on the number of transcripts you have requested in the form, you need to pay the online fee. Check the Transcripts Application form > Instructions > Point 7 for fee-related details.2.1. Here are some important things which you should do for boosting your numbers in English section especially.Problems :1.Grammar : You read this or not, it doesn’t matter in bank exams. Anyone who has a little bit of understanding of english only as a language, can do its questions when it comes in D-day, but the only point is he/she had a general Idea about solving question which varied from person to person. If you’re the aspirant of SSC then you have to know about grammar little bit more but if you’re a aspirant of banking exams then it doesn’t matter more. Anyway, if someone amongst you want to read Grammar then don’t use too many books for Grammar, if you want you can use this book SHINE BOOK but even if you not take this then also its not harm you bcz this book contained some rarest SSC level grammar rules which can also helpful for you in your understanding of the subject a bit more.2. Word Power : It is the key for your success, How?, I would tell you here. In a nutshell, your overall knowledge will grow. Now the question is how someone read a newspaper who has never read it before for a competitive purpose, Don’t worry I would tell also this to you here.Whenever you reading a newspaper, first read the content of any article and then translare it in your own language as it is. By this you can start to linking words in sentences which will help you in spot errors and filler sections and after linking sentences you can actually improve your sentence arrangement areas. I will share two stories:When I was 5 I made a new friend, Evan. Evan and I played each day in my room. My mom and her boyfriend were not concerned about my “imaginary” friend, until they started seeing him. They would see him standing near our bathroom or in their bedroom sometimes. Once, my mom’s boyfriend literally ran out the bedroom and refused to sleep there. They thought switching rooms would help.One day, As Evan and I were playing, he became upset and hit me. My mom called a Reverend and his wife who were close friends of my family. They came over and brought others, but I don’t remember how many. When his wife entered our apartment, she went straight to my bedroom and walked over to a net that held my stuffed animals. She pointed at my favorite stuffed Barney and said “This one, he’s attached himself to this one”.Next, Reverend, his wife, and the others formed a circle around me in our living room. They were praying and speaking in “tongues”. This is what I remember the most: I was terrified, confused and crying. I remember them being so much bigger than I. I didn’t understand why Evan was bad and I certainly didn’t understand what they were doing.After their prayers, the Reverend told my mom that we mustn’t speak of him. He also told her that we would be getting a lot of company over the next few days. I remember getting MANY visitors. My mother would only let them in if they agreed to let her put a cross on their foreheads with oil, I think. There were also crosses on the door to enter the apartment. Later, she told me that she was instructed to annoint everyone because Evan would be trying to get back in “on the backs” of our visitors.She never let me talk about him after that. It’s funny because I remember him. He was a small boy, around my age. He had dark blonde hair, he wore a white collared shirt and white shorts. He was a kind boy, a fun playmate. Perhaps we had a disagreement about my toys like many children do. He was real to me even though his memory fades as I age. It’s insane to me until this day that he wasn’t “real”.That particular complex had some strange happenings from what I can recall. I had some very vivid nightmares during our time there, and even though I was quite young, I still remember them very well.There was a woman across the hall that would always come to my mom’s house and as I eavesdropped, I overheard the woman say that something was attacking her and her son. A lot of the people there gossiped about the complex being haunted.I have another memory of talking to another boy in the hall of the complex, he was older. He said something funny or I think he did because I remember we laughed. He walked away from me toward an elderly woman’s apartment who was one of the residents on our floor, Maggie. When I turned to say goodbye, he was gone. I had never seen him on our floor, my mom was friends with literally everyone on our floor (there were only 4 apartments). I do not know if the boy was “real” or not.I also heard years later that the residential manager said that the complex was built over a former cemetery. I do not know if there is any truth to this, I have not looked into it. If I can confirm that it is in fact true, I will update this post.————————STORY #2———————-I have an aunt and uncle who are very close in age to my brothers and I so we all grew up together. We all shared this weird experience while having nightmares. My aunt called them “Hanks”. The hanks were malevolent entities that we could not see, but they would attack us and grab and squeeze our sides. The sensation that was felt when they would grab our sides is similar to what it feels like when you’ve hit your “funny bone”. The feeling was deeper and more intense though, an uncomfortable feeling…like they were digging.When I got older, I started searching the Web for similar experiences with no luck initially. Finally, I came across a term: “haint” which are spirits that are unable to find peace. So, obviously I realized they weren’t called “Hanks”. It’s just odd because my aunt never told us how she learned that word. Even today, she has never said how she knew that, even though she was mispronouncing the word.I still have nightmares about the Hanks (I still call them this). Now, they appear to me as people. When I was a teenager, I was convinced that they were grabbing my sides because that was the easiest way to get to my soul. Now that seems so absurd but, after having so many nightmares about them over the years and considering the emptiness I have experienced over the years, I wonder if they haven’t been taking it piece by piece all of this time. This experience is recurring so, I’ve learned to wake myself up when it happens. Sometimes I can’t, so I close my eyes and pray to whomever is listening to wake me up.
