How did you get into Stanford? What advice would you give to someone who wants to study at Stanford?
First off, you must be academically competitive. In other words, get As in challenging classes (AP, IB, dual-enroll, etc), take the most challenging and intriguing curriculum that interests you, score within Stanford’s range on the SAT, etc. Those are the basics. However, most schools including Stanford need to see way more than that to admit you. They want to see what you do outside the classroom. My number one tip is to develop your passion. Take it above and beyond what you thought possible. For example, pretend you are passionate about neuroscience. You love the subject so much that you start a club about it at school. Yet, don’t stop there. Develop a curriculum and expand it into a county-wide, state-wide, or even national initiative. However, the key thing is don’t just do things to get into Stanford. Admissions officers can see right through those activities. For me, I genuinely wanted to teach girls computer science and somehow my initiative grew international. Stanford is an entrepreneurial school. You cannot simply craft a resume to get in. You must love creating and leaving an impact, thus Stanford admissions wants to see that in your application. They are looking for a personality and work ethic fit to their school, so if you fit what they are looking for, great! If not, it is fine. The reason why some kids get into Harvard and don’t get into Stanford or vice versa is because of personality fit. Find the school that fits your goals and your personality. If you believe Stanford is that school, then show them why you are a good fit by illustrating your personality through your essays, teacher recs, and activities.

How many times a year do Stanford University alumni give back as money donations back to Stanford?
I’m sure that different Stanford alumni donate every business day of the year, and probably other days via online donations. Stanford probably has a dedicated staff of “development” employees who call alumni (and possibly parents of current students) year-round to ask for money. All schools ask for money, but many do not have the fundraising resources of Stanford. Heaven knows Stanford doesn’t need another dime.

What advice can you give to a Scottish Medical School drop-out looking to transfer apply to the IVY-League, MIT, Stanford, etc.?
My primary advice is that if you are serious about changing your major and attending university in the US, then you should apply to universities that you are actually likely to get accepted to. This does not include MIT, Stanford, or any Ivy League university.I don’t agree that the “quality of teaching are exceptional” at these top ranked schools. I had some excellent professors at MIT (undergrad) and Stanford (graduate school), but I also had some bad professors at both schools. These top ranked schools are known for their research more than for their teaching. There are a lot of universities in the US and in many other countries that have excellent professors. There are a lot of universities that can give you an excellent undergraduate education. If you want to drop out of medical school and pursue medical technologies, then you should apply to other good universities, and you should take costs into account. You are likely to want a graduate degree, which implies that you should find an undergraduate program which is good and which is affordable. Try to get very strong grades as an undergrad to improve your chances of admission to top graduate programs.

How hard would it be for someone to transfer out of MIT to Harvard or Stanford?
Personally I have degrees from two of these schools, and know multiple people who have attended the other one. I have seen pretty widespread agreement that academically MIT is the toughest of the three. The quarter system at Stanford does however go quite fast, so staying ahead in your classes at all times is important there.Generally, if you are majoring in anything that MIT is good at, then transferring from MIT to either Stanford or Harvard is a bit odd. If you have straight A’s at MIT, why would you want to transfer to an easier school? If you don’t have straight A’s at MIT, then why would you expect to be accepted at Harvard or Stanford? The only case that I can think of where this transfer would make sense is if you have decided to major in something such as History or Music where MIT does not have a good program. In this case, I think that you are unlikely to be accepted, but it would be worth applying and seeing what happens. If transferring does not work out, then as an MIT student you can still take some classes at Harvard and at Wellesley College.

Which is more likely to be successful: transfer to Stanford form four-year university (LMU) or community college (Foothill)?
I taught honors students at Stanford for 25 years and took a course at Foothill to learn about maintaining computer systems to buy off a course in the Economics Department. (And have a friend who has taught at Loyola Marymount University, if that is the LMU you are referring to.)Community colleges in California are basically open enrollment, meaning anyone who has graduated from a high school in California or has the equivalent GED (over 18) is admitted. I had no problems getting in! Many of the people in my computer class were immigrants trying to get a foot in the door of a Silicon Valley employer. They were highly motivated. But I doubt if all the classes are taught at the same level as LMU. Therefore, Stanford would probably transfer few of the credits from a California Community College. On the other hand, it might also be difficult to get into Stanford as a junior with two years at LMU. You are better off doing well at LMU or a California State University or University of California campus, then going to Stanford for graduate school. In the end you will have a Stanford degree, just not an undergraduate degree. Finally, if you can’t afford LMU, Stanford, a CSU or a UC, go to a community college and do well, then transfer into a CSU or UC, or even LMU. In the academic year 2016–2017 in-state tuition at Foothill was $1,551/year and out-of-state tuition was $8,391/year! For comparison, UCB was $13,431 for in-state and $38,139 out-of-state, LMU was $42,795/year and Stanford was $48,987! However, many students at Stanford have some sort of financial aid.Is it worth it? Maybe, if you are studying something that you love. Maybe not, if you end up in a field you hate. If you are not sure what you love or hate, start at Foothill. As soon as you know what you love, invest in your education: it is a BIG investment!
