How do I fill out my FAFSA?
The FAFSA isn't as scary as it seems, but it's helpful to have the documents you'll need handy before you fill it out. It's available starting January 1 of the year you'll attend school, and it's best to complete it as early as possible so you get the most aid you'll qualify for. Be especially mindful of school and state deadlines that are earlier than the federal deadline of June 2017. Check out NerdWallet's 5 Hacks to Save Time on Your 2016 FAFSA. These are the basic steps: Gather the documents you'll need to complete the form by following this checklist.Log in to the FAFSA with your Federal Student Aid ID. You'll need an FSA ID to sign and submit the form electronically, and your parent will need one too if you're a dependent student. Create one here. Follow the prompts to fill out the FAFSA. This guide will help you fill it out according to your family situation. You'll be able to save time by importing income information from the IRS starting Feb. 7, 2016. Many families don't file their 2015 income taxes until closer to the deadline of April 18. But it's a good idea to fill out your FAFSA earlier than that. Use your parents' 2014 tax information to estimate their income, then go back in and update your FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool once they've filed their taxes. What is the best thing you've looked forward to in your life?
Getting my medical license. The process is so painful that sometimes I feel like stabbing myself in the heart and gouging my eye out, and jumping off a bridge at the same time. And the most frustrating part of it is that there’s not a single thing I can do to speed things up.The website isn’t very user friendly. They request way too many documents. Like, you need to submit 6 different things to prove your citizenship. Can’t it be assumed that if the Federal Government gave me a passport, they know that it’s because I’m a citizen? Can’t it also safely be assumed that if I graduated from a residency program, I must have graduated from a medical school at some point? The website doesn’t tell you everything you need to send. After you’ve filled out the application online, there is a PDF you’re supposed to find somewhere. The PDF was the old application form. You’d fill it out by hand or by editing the PDF. If you did that, you’d see an number of appendices that told you what other documentation you were supposed to supply. But if you apply online, there’s nothing to let you know what you’re missing. So, you have to call them. When you do, they tell you that you need a bunch of stuff you’d never have guessed: a background check, forms you’re supposed to submit to your residency programs, etc. Why not put that in the online application? Then, after you do all that, you might wonder if your file is complete. So, you call. They’ll tell you that your application hasn’t been processed yet. How long till it gets processed? 3 to 4 weeks! So, they won’t even look at your file for 3 to 4 weeks. And, 3 to 4, of course, means 4. Then, when they look at your file, it might even be week 5 by the time they respond to you. At that point, they’ll tell your that your file is missing some stuff. You ask for clarification about the missing stuff, because you’re pretty sure you’ve already sent it. You hear nothing back for a week. You call them, only to hear that they thought they’d emailed you what you were supposed to fill out… You submit what they’re asking for, having wasted another week waiting. Then, they tell you that your file has been submitted for final approval. YAY!Then you’re told that, since you used to be a nurse, you should also submit a nursing license verification. Okay, no biggie, you think. You did a similar thing for Iowa a few years back. You’ll just go online and have the state of Michigan send the state of Tennessee some information about the nursing license that expired 6 years ago.You get on the Michigan website, and things are so disorganized that you can’t for the life of you figure out how to submit the verification request. Oh, and the process has changed. In 2015, you could use the Nursys verification site. But Michigan has pulled out of this process, because… just because. Now, you have to call during business hours, realize that you’re supposed to download and fill out a form, attach a money order (you can’t pay online anymore), and mail it to a P.O. Box.You do that, sending it by express mail. You call the next day to see if it’s been received. Now you’re told that if you want to send things by express mail, there’s another address you should have sent it to, an address that was never communicated to you when you talked to the Michigan people on the phone. You learn that sending mail to the P.O. Box means that it will sit there for a week, after which it will be processed by the Cashier’s office/Finance office/Treasury office, then slowly make its way to the Bureau of Licensing… this process might take 2 weeks. At this point, you’ve sent your initial application 8 weeks before. You wonder why it is that the process couldn’t be more streamlined. Why couldn’t they be a uniform process for all states? Why couldn’t they at least be a central database where healthcare providers could send their documentation, so that whenever they apply for licensing in a new state, that state can immediately receive all the relevant documentation. You’re powerless. You try to think of other things you might do.You remember that Iowa must have a copy of your nursing verification license. You wonder if you could talk to them and see if they’d share it with you. You’re told that they will emphatically not release the document to you. Why? Who knows. Anyway, they might consider releasing it to the Tennessee people if they are contacted directly by their Medical Board. You sheepishly ask the people in Tennessee if they’d be willing to contact Iowa, giving them a phone number, email, and fax number, knowing full well that it will be to no avail. You decide that maybe, if you were to track down the cashier’s office in Michigan, you could fly there and make the payment in person, in a bid to speed up the processing of your license verification request. It’s after hours now, so you can’t be sure. There’s a plane early in the morning. You could fly to Detroit, rent a car, drive to Lansing, and give it a shot. But… what if it doesn’t work? You decide to wait until the morning and call the office to see if getting there in person would make a difference. You are told that it is impossible to make a payment in person, because… rules. There’s literally not a damn thing you can do.And that, my friends, is the story of my life right now. The most frustrating part of this saga is that not only can I not work, but I’m sort of homeless right now. Let me explain. A while back, I bid on a house. I used what is called a physician loan. What my lender did not tell me is that you need an active medical license. So, we were a week from the closing date before I learned this. At this point, I had three options:Walk away from the home purchase and rent. This wouldn’t have been a terrible idea.Prolong my temporary lease at the place I was renting. I would not do this because I hated, hated, hated them with their nickle-and-diming tactics.Wait for my license.I opted for number 3, because I thought it couldn’t take much longer until I’d get my license. My belongings are currently in storage. I’m staying with my sister in Florida. It’s not the worst thing that’s ever happened to anyone in human life, but it’s still really frustrating. The only bright spot is that I get to spend time with my family. I have a nephew and two nieces here that I hadn’t seen in 9 months. They’re growing so very fast. I am constantly peppering them with mental math questions, but they seem to love me for some reason. So, all in all, things could be worse.

How did Quora interns get their internship at Quora?
Here’s my Quora story over a span of 5 years.I made a Quora account in 2013. Within a few days of making an account, I was hooked. The quality of questions and answers, the community, the knowledge people were sharing—it was all very engaging to me. Quora soon became a product I would use almost daily. To me, Quora was the only social media site on which I was actually learning something. In 2014, when I was applying to colleges, I was so into Quora that I even mentioned it in my application essays! (That’s a story for another time)In 2015, I started studying Computer Science at UCLA. As a freshman, I was looking for internships for summer. Quora was definitely one of my dream companies. However, I knew that Quora was a very small company and their hiring bar was extremely high. At that time, I didn’t feel qualified enough to even apply to Quora. I applied to hundreds of other companies and got a wonderful internship at Thomson Reuters. In 2016, I completed my first internship (I’ve written about it here). At that point, I thought I had enough experience in Front-end Engineering that I took a shot and applied to Quora online. Just to be safe, I also cold emailed one of the recruiters about my interest in Quora as a product and why I wanted to work there. I don’t know which method worked, but I got back a response the very next day! An initial phone screen was scheduled with the UI Engineering manager, Scott Young. I remember discussing my personal website and side projects with Scott during the call. The call went well, and I moved on to to the next round: technical phone interview. The technical phone interview was with a Quora engineer and after the interview I thought I did well. I got an email within a few days. I was rejected. In 2017, I was lucky enough to get a great internship at another incredible company—Houzz. I got a lot of experience in Software Engineering and absolutely loved interning at Houzz and spending a summer in Silicon Valley (I’ve written more about it here). After my internship, I mustered enough courage to email Scott at Quora for an internship for the next summer. He remembered me and offered to schedule another interview! I had a great chat with him again and moved to the technical phone screen. This time, I was able to actually do well in that round since I was much better prepared and the questions were sort of similar as before. So I moved to the next round: Quora onsite. During the onsite, there were about 4–5 back to back interviews. That day was grueling. The interviews were hard, but the format was one of the best interview formats I’ve experienced at any tech company. After the onsite, I had mixed feelings about how I did—I thought I nailed a couple of interviews, but messed up completely on the others. Exactly one week later, I got an email from Quora: I was offered an internship. I got many emails from Quora employees encouraging me to accept the offer, and that’s what I did.In 2018, I finally started working at Quora in June! I'm working as a UI Engineering intern and I'm the only intern in this role this year. Its just been three weeks at Quora and I'm very happy that I've already started contributing to the codebase that runs Quora. I'm working on a very cool upcoming Quora product and I'm excited for the rest of the summer!EDIT: I worked on Quora Spaces during my internship. Your chances increase manifold if your CGPA is >9.0 Not to lose hope if you haven’t got it. Neither did I.Showcase the major projects you have undertaken in your undergrad till date.Share links everywhere in your resume and cover letter. Links to your LinkedIn, ResearchGate, Codechef, SPOJ, Github etc are pretty useful.Upload your project reports to a cloud storage such as Google Drive and share the links in your resume. The mail you are going to write is the most critical part and is usually known as a cover letter. Professors are only going to open and see your resume only if your cover letter is strong.Talk about the technologies you’ve learned, the projects you’ve done or are doing, the collaborations you have undertaken with professors at your own college in your cover letter. This section is the one that convinces the professor of your credibility.Avoid attaching your CV in your mail.Upload your CV in Google Drive and share the links. Emails from unknown sources usually end up in Junk folder of university emails.Make sure your email stays at top.Email professors late at night such that your email will be somewhere at the top when the professor logs in into his email account in the morning.Talk about your inclination and motivation to work under a certain area/domain. Convince the professor about why you want to work in that certain field.Repeatedly spamming a professor will be of no good.Filter out the professors who match your research interest. Mailing every single professor of the entire department may result into marking your email address as a spammer by the institute email filter. An example of mail to professor can be:( Source : Rahul Goradia Answer)Subject : Regarding Internship in Embedded SystemRespected Prof.____________Sir/Madam,I am ——- from ——— pursuing ___________ and willing to do internship under ______________ posted on website for duration _____.Sir/Ma’am, You are working in ________ domain and you have carried out ______ projects. I will be available during whole internship and will be very sincere throughout internship. (You can add reference of your faculty as well.)It will be a great pleasure to work under you.Sincerely————.Now let us focus on my IIT Bombay Internship.Actually I received internship offer from IIT Bombay, IIT Gandhinagar and IIIT-Delhi in my 2nd Year.Focusing on IIT Bombay Internship. The IIT Bombay has two ways of internship1) Ekalavya Internship Program **EKALAVYA HOME Page (EKALAVYA HOME Page)2) By mailing to the professor of your field of interest.Let me describe both one by one and all things which you requireThe Ekalavy internship mentioned : Apply for the internship only if you are completing the 3rd year in April/May 2017. Students completing 2nd year, with exceptional academic performance and other achievements may also be considered. The procedure for ekalavya internship,a) Apply for the internship.b) If you get selected for the first round. Then wait my friend , there is one round more.c) The second round is an Online Test, I was guided a lot by my seniors for the test, they helped me a lot for the test preparation.d) If you clear the online test( which has medium difficulty), congo you got selected. In order to get an internship by emailing the professor, you can look on etiquettes on how to mail a prof., how to search for one, how to get in touch.I will add links to the mailing etiquettes soon.I will edit more details soon, rest you can comment on specific topics which you want to know about, I will be happy to help.I am a student majoring in Electronics and Communication branch. Also, let me add, your present college won’t stop you from getting an Intern anywhere ( A motivation for you).Edit 1:The Art of Emailing Professors to Secure a Foreign Internship ( Source : Internshala )Email is the most under-rated, under-used tool for grabbing an internship abroad. Read all about how to utilize it effectively! There are two definitive ways to bag an internship-1. Apply to various internship programs such as MITACS, DAAD-WISE, etc. Fill up your application form in the fanciest way possible and leave the rest up to fate.OR2. Write an email to a professor as a prospective intern/student.The latter might sound easier than it reads.Being resilient: Professors are busy people. Do not lose hope if your first, second or even third email goes unanswered. You have to be resilient while contacting professors.Timing matters: The time you send out your mail matters more than you think. Never email a professor during the weekends or Friday night; that might be a convenient time for you to email the professor but it is also the professor’s day off and your mail will get buried under the numerous other student’s applications. Professors tend to check their mail during their office hours thus increasing chances of a reply if sent out at such a time.Whom not to contact: It is advisable not to contact more than one professor from the same department as, if found out, it will dampen your credibility in the eyes of both professors.Be specific: I cannot stress on this point enough. In the subject heading of email, be sure to include the specific area you want to intern in. The professor shouldn’t have to scour through the email to search for what you want . If you want to do a research project under him/her, a subject line such as ‘2015 Prospective Research Intern for xyz subject area’ would be ideal.Funding: Most professors are reluctant to provide funding and understandably so; you are an unknown candidate with only words to prove your credibility. Typing out a politely worded, technical email will help your chances. Make sure there are no grammatical errors. If you are good at academia with prior work experience pertaining to their field, then getting funded becomes much easier. The email is all about you being a student that the professor absolutely HAS to offer a position. The real question you should ask yourself is: What can I do to make the professor respond to my mail instead of ten dozen others lying in his/her inbox? Here’s what-Start Early: Consider this. You contact professors in October for an internship that starts in January. Provided one responds, confirmation of a project takes time. There are official procedures to be considered, especially if it’s a funded project. Then there might be a matter of VISA which needs a few weeks at the least. In the end, you might find yourself racing against time to get the confirmation.TIP: If you want an internship offer by January of next year, you should start with your research six months ahead. Keep in mind the vacation timings for the countries you are targeting because most professors will have their automatic vacation responders on during these months. By the time they read their mail, yours will be more than twenty thousand leagues under all other emails.Target the right country: If you desire an international internship, you have to be smart while choosing universities. Some professors just don’t have the funds to admit you. So what’s the point in setting up base camp there?TIP: At the outset, select countries which are known to provide funding to students. For example, news and statistics show that of late, Canada is an emerging tycoon in the education sector and is allocating massive funds to projects. So it could very well be your next destination.Spam emails: Most emails from unknown addresses are flagged as spam and don’t even signNow the inbox. Professors also can’t be sure whether you are truly a student or a fake.TIP: One smart preventive measure would be to use your university email ID which identifies your first and last name and also has something like ‘@iitg’ or some such credible ending. This validates both points at once.Bulk emails: A lot of students have a huge list of professors and play chance with their emails. Writing a bulk email with a set format to all professors will only result in immediate deletion from inbox.TIP: Spell the professor’s name correctly. Get the honorifics right- Professors are usually ‘Dr.’. Salutations such as ‘Dear Dr.X’ or simply ‘Dr.X’ should be used. Write about what interests you in their body of work.Do your homework: Professing interest in someone’s work by saying ‘I would be really enthused to work under you’ has absolutely no bearing unless you give evidence to support it.TIP: Run through the body of work the professor has done, select one publication or project that overlaps with your interest and READ IT. Come up with some interesting insight or query about it. Don’t be vague, use technical words. Try to add your own ideas. Nothing proves your interest more than actually doing your homework.I recently bagged my Latest 2018 Summer Internship in “France- Paris ,Lille”.I will love to share it’s detail along with 30+ Internships that a “first year student too can fill and achieve”.Meanwhile, you can ping me on Facebook or ask your questions in the comment section for any help.(facebook : Animesh Srivastava ).Thanks for all the sources:https://blog.internshala.com/201...Tuhin KunduRahul GarodiaHappy to help you all ! I have scored 100 in CLAT 2017 (Gen). Is this the end of my life? I am a failure.
Hello there, I see that you are in a situation which is very similar to the one which I was in 2015. So let me begin from the beginning. I had always been a good student, always in the top 10 of my class, not exceptionally outstanding but a good student nevertheless. I scored 90% in my tenth boards (went to an ICSE school, almost everyone gets a 90), took up PCM because thats what everyone around me was doing. I joined a JEE coaching and for the next two years struggled to pass in school and in keeping up with the course at the coaching centre. I was miserable and my grades kept on dropping. So cut to 2015. Board year is here again. College applications are an extra addition. I'm barely passing my classes. I see no future for myself. I fill out forms of all engineering exams. Now, here starts the interesting part. I had always been interested in current affairs, and in politics and governance and international relations. I was an avid reader with a good grip on both general knowledge and English. I had known about CLAT for quite a long time so I finally decided that I'll try my luck in CLAT too.The first half of 2015, I slogged really hard, preparing for boards and engineering exams and a little bit for CLAT. Board exams do not go great. The engineering exams were a mixture of good and bad( I cracked some of those, even though my rank wasn't that great). I had joined a month long crash course in April for CLAT preparations.10th May, 2015- Dday arrives. Sadly, I was not equipped for the paper. I scored much less than what I had expected. I scored some 90 odd marks (it was a very low scoring CLAT year). I still remember they released the score 2 days before declaring the rank. I was devastated. I felt like all my dreams were crushed. I had scored a meager 72% in my tweflth boards and I had no desire to study engineering, obviously with this dismal score in boards and due to normalization rules my JEE mains rank was quite a large digit, even though I had qualified a few other engineering exams, those prospects were not very promising. So for the next two days, before declaration of CLAT rank, I used to cry all day long thinking I had no future. Thinking that I was a failure. I felt like I had let down my parents, my teachers and myself. My family tried to console me, but I was so deeply immersed in self-pity and melancholy that I remained gloomy. When I got my CLAT rank, it was not as bad as I thought it would be after seeing my score but it definitely was not what I had hoped for during preparations. Soon the counseling process started. I got NUSRL, Ranchi in the first list. I was both relieved and disappointed at the same time. I was relieved after the score fiasco that atleast I qualified for an NLU but disappointed as I didn't make it to the top tier NLUs. Moreover, NUSRL was a fairly new NLU with its own share of problems. Nevertheless I joined NUSRL and life went on.I felt like I had not given CLAT my 100%, so I decided to attempt CLAT in 2016 too. Now, I was to make this attempt while coping with a full fledged semester in law school. I had to balance law school and my CLAT preparations. Man, it was tough. As a cruel twist of fate, I was again allotted NUSRL, Ranchi in the first list in 2016. That was it, it was an offical sign from the universe that NUSRL was my future. I nearly got debarred for shortage of attendance that semester. So I picked up the broken pieces of my dreams and decided to move on. I am not going to tell you that it was easy, it was really tough. I used to cry myself to sleep every night. I felt like a failure more than ever before. And because I had missed my classes a lot at NUSRL, I had no time to mop around, I had to catch up fast as end semester exams were approaching. May and June, 2016 were really tough for me.But you know what, all these failures made me stronger. I learnt that in life you will not always get what you desire, so sometimes one has to make the most of what one gets. I did the same. I cried and wept and lost heart and struggled but I finally overcame this, I made peace with my situation. I embraced my shortcomings, worked really hard at school, focused on developing myself and I can proudly say that I'm a very different person than what I was an year back, I'm stronger and better at handling failure. I made the best of what I got and became a whole new better person. So I will suggest you to do the same. Embrace and accept your shortcomings and work on them, don't lose heart, keep working hard and never feel like a failure just because you didn't do well on a test, I will not lie to you that test scores don't matter, they do but they are in no way the measure of a person's full potential. Your father is right, don't lose heart, you have the chance to handle failure and make the best of an unfavourable situation. All the very best for your future endeavours. And if you need any help, feel free to ping me, always here to help.-A person who had been in your situation once and learnt how to make the best of it.
