[Music] hi i'm morton mosswild i'm a forester with the maine forest service and we're here today to talk about how to know your trees a lot of people spend time in the main woods not everybody knows the trees that are around them it's not that hard usually when we're looking at a tree we only need to know three or four things about that tree in order to be able to identify it and recognize what kind of tree it is the first thing we might want to think about is what kind of leaves does a tree have there are basically two different kinds of leaves that we might see on a tree one kind of leaf is shaped like a needle it's long and narrow and these are still leaves they function as other green parts of plants do other trees have leaves that are shaped broad and flat and this is what we would call a broad leafed tree there are many different kinds of broad-leaved trees so now we have needle-leaved trees and broad-leaved trees it's a good place to start most of the needle-leaved trees in main
