it's what mixed emotions for many people that this this era in new london's history is coming to an end this is like a monument to the winthrop urban renewal project that began in the 60s for many many of us in my generation you know we've lived with the effects of of urban renewal and the winthrop cove project and the damage that it did to the city in hindsight well meaning as the government policies were they failed our city and they failed the families that tried to build a community here i grew up here i lived there for 19 years i arrived here when i was uh 1981 i was six years old and i lived here until 1998. uh and i'll tell you i'll tell you one thing i made many many fun memories that i have of this place i mean here is where where i began to learn how to speak span english here is where i learned how to play basketball how to play you know uh football out there in the field that you can't see it no longer because of the uh the building that's there i learned how also to play u
