South Africa's economy is now officially in a state of disaster because it cannot keep the lights on while its state-owned power company eskom was crowned the world's best power company in 2001 Africa's most industrialized economy now faces hour-long blackouts every day so what happened well first eskom was a victim of its own success after apartheid it brought electricity to thousands of black and colored citizens this increased economic growth which in turn increased demand for power demand that couldn't be met because ascom had failed to invest in new power plants not great but it got way worse when South Africa's rulers started replacing competent managers with corrupt ones and as a result many power plants haven't been properly maintained for years so now young South Africans are increasingly bringing their business and talent to countries that can actually keep the lights on
