If a calamity were to wipe out the continental United States, how powerful of a nation would Alaska, Hawaii, and the rest of our territories be?
Let's assume for the sake of this question that the calamity is that the entire country just sinks into the ground and is covered in water. Conveniently for Mexico and Canada, this happens exactly at the borders. Now, the question was what the status of the US would be in this case, but we're missing the bigger picture here - the entire world would be in shambles. The #1 superpower, the one that just about every country trades with / gets support from / sells oil to, has just been obliterated, and that'd suck for just about everyone, except for the countries who are able to sustain themselves without trading with the US.Countries who were somewhat peaceful due to US intervention or presence will start wars.Countries whose economy was dependant on the US would collapse.Prices of goods abundant in mainland US would skyrocket. And we, the rest of the world, are supposed to be concerned about Alaska and Hawaii? Now, those two states will be OK militarily, as they get to split the US Navy, but there's no way in hell that they'd re-form the United (two) States of America. Heck, a fair portion of the Hawaiian population already wants to secede from the US as it were. But a global superpower? These states don't have the abundant resources that the mainland USA has, nor do they have the central hubs from which they'd do business. They'd even eventually cut back on the powerful navy they'd have, just because they have so little to protect. So bottom line - the US would lose everything.

How likely is it that the USA will cede the Minor and Outlying Islands to the State of Hawaii?
Unlikely - particularly in the Caribbean! That said, Wikipedia says Palmyra Atoll (near Kiribati, some distance south of Hawaii) was claimed by Hawaii back when it was independent, and was officially part of Hawaii until Hawaii became a state.

How can I find out what my State of Hawaii ID number is, because I lost my card?
The best place to start would be the nearest driver’s license office (state IDs are issued by driver’s license offices). If you’re located on Oahu, here is a list of locations: http://www.honolulu.gov/cms-csd-...Tell the folks at the counter that you lost your ID card and they will assist you with the forms you need to get a new one.

I moved to Hawaii from out of state, do I need to do a whole driving written test again?
Don’t take what I say per verbatim because I might be wrong. I got my drivers license in Hawaii but my husband got his drivers license in California. We’re both locals to Hawaii but due to the military and other circumstances played a factor in this. Anyways, when he moved back to Hawaii he was able to get a Hawaii drivers license without having to take the driving written test again. You’ll need social security card, another form of ID, birth certificate & two bills that show proof of residence. I’m not sure how much the fee will cost you. And they won’t give you the actual DL that day, just a paper card, and actual physical plastic card will come in the mail. Google Hawaii DMV and look at their website or contact them, so you know for certain the requirements. If you’re on O’ahu—Kapolei, Kalihi, Wahiawa are usually the fastest DMV’s to deal with. There’s a DMV location at pearlridge mall but the wait time there is ridiculous and some of the staff are err—unpleasant.I ended up googling the website for you. Here’s the link for the Hawaii DMV:Motor Vehicle Registration

Would it be a bad idea to study marine biology as an out-of-state undergraduate at Hawaii?
There are so many variables when you ask a question like that. The easy answer is no, Hawaii is surrounded by ocean and many of the schools have some type of marine biology course work, it just depends on what you want to do when you’re finished with your program. Do you want to study a specific piece of marine biology that can only be found in the Pacific Ocean? Are you coming for your undergrad or graduate studies? What do you want to do when you’re not in school? Where do you want to intern or work when you’re not in school? I was fortunate to grow up in Hawaii so we had marine biology as an option in high school and in college, even though I was not majoring in it. Good luck, if you can afford it, go for it.

How do the crime rates in Hawaii compare to the rest of the United States?
I live on the Big Island in Hilo. The crime here is minor compared to the Mainland. I feel very safe here including in Kona.I read the daily newspaper and also receive the Crime Report weekly in my inbox. Most crimes are those of opportunity….for example, you leave your keys in your car unlocked (duh), you leave purses or backpacks clearly visible within your vehicle, you have a vehicle that people want and know they can steal (mostly old cars and trucks), you leave your house open when you are not at home etc. Most violent crimes that I know about are within families or groups of friends.Houses being built are also susceptible to crime because of the easy access with no one watching. I have heard of windows and solar arrays being stolen in unprotected houses, but not recently. I built a house along the Hamakua Coast in 2004 and had a Craftsman tractor stolen from a shed. We learned our lesson. We ended up staying at our house until it was finished. The more remote you are, the more chance there is of someone looking to steal from you. But rarely is there violence.Of course, in Honolulu there is more crime, but on the other islands, not so much.Due to the recent lava flows and loss of housing, I am expecting an uptick in property crimes for money reasons. I have lived in Hilo 3 years and have had no problems, but I also have dogs and a fenced in yard.
