What is the most absurd rule you ever had to follow at work?
Ha! In working for a hospital, I see a lot of stupid rules. For instance, on one wintery midnight shift I was let in by a security guard in the front of the building. I was wearing my proper photo identification front and center, my work clothes, and I had been doing this for years with no trouble. Then, when the security guy asked if I was a temp, and I replied in the affirmative, he told me I had to go back outside, walk the mile around the hospital to the back hospital entrance (which isn't well-lit and goes past woods), and he'd buzz me in. He said the other security guards weren't enforcing the rules. However, he couldn't explain the reason for this rule and he wouldn't tell me his supervisor's name. Eventually, he just let me in and told me to follow the rules next time. I made sure to tell him very sweetly that I would be sure to call for him each and every single time I needed a security escort to my car parked in the proper lot and to that back entrance. He was going to have to protect little old me and walk alongside me every time I called for an escort. I'm not sure if I was a catalyst, but that rule was gone in a week.Another time security rules were an unnecessary hassle was regarding my id before we had photo IDs. We had our name tags, but at the gate you had to show a photo id. No problem. I had my passport ready and showed the guard. Instead of waving me on, he told me to pull off and show my driver's license. That's right-- A U.S. Passport was not good enough id for this guard! I couldn't believe it! If I remember correctly, I had to have three forms of identification to get a passport and it is also a photo id. My driver's license required far less identification. The story did end happily because I do also carry my license, but it was an unnecessary stop for both me and the security guard. I still laugh about how it's easier to get into the country than it is to get into my hospital. It's not even the WHO headquarters in which they have deadly diseases to worry about. It's a long-term care nursing hospital. Do they think terrorists are going to try to infiltrate the hospital to kidnap pap or granny? Lol.Then, there was the smoking escort policy. My hospital has a little smoke shack for patients outside the hospital. It's kept warm with heaters and patients frequently chain smoke out there for as long as they can. That's fine for them, but I'm allergic to cigarette smoke. There's a hallway still in the building in which one can see through the windows and scramble outside as necessary to prevent runaways and so on. No, I was told. I either had to be inside the smoke shack or be outside in winter in nothing but my short-sleeve scrub top for minutes to hours. (Hoodies and jackets were also forbidden during duties). When the nurse in charge told me that, I told him the only way I was going into that shack was with an epi-pen in hand. They could charge me with all the insubordination they liked, but I was waiting for my patient indoors. That policy changed shortly after that to allow nurses who did smoke to take patients to the smoke shack for nonsmokers.

How do illegal immigrants live in the US successfully for 20 years, including getting a driving license, get a job, pay taxes, and buy a house?
I live in Arizona and have seen a lot of this go down over the last couple decades. It boils down to numerous businesses, both small and large who are willing to capitalize on a cheap, extremely hard working labor force (legal status be damned). There are very few white people in this state who work as laborers in landscaping, roofing, concrete, tree trimming, house painting, dish washing, car washing, house cleaning, and crop harvesting. The white people run the companies. Or are the foremen or managers. But almost every person busting thier ass at the physical work is from Mexico and many speak little if any English. They are getting paid under the table, or they are using stolen identites for tax purposes (a decade ago a friend of mine's brother was sent a letter from the IRS claiming he was several years and thousands of dollars behind on taxes, his brother was 13 at the time). These immigrant workers are also doing the job for less than a legal citizen would take, sometimes less than minimum wage. This saves the companies money, and law enforcement did little to crack down on the employers. And since the businesses were making money on the cheap labor, they didn't want the cops to end the gravy train either.A cottage industry of slum lords were more than willing to take rent money from these immigrants for houses and apartments, and if you sell a car in a private transaction there is no legal requirement to verify the legal status of the buyer. Sure they are supposed to register and insure it, but that only matters if they get pulled over, and the smart ones register it under a family memeber who is a citizen or has a green card. Now that you have an immigrant population with money to spend, entrepreneurial people who speak the same language will start local businesses to cater to the needs of these folks who might be shy to spend their money in a store where they have trouble communicating. And all this feeds back into and perpetuates the cycle. So the short answer is: money!

Why did my employer give me a W-9 Form to fill out instead of a W-4 Form?
I wrote about the independent-contractor-vs-employee issue last year, see http://nctaxpro.wordpress.com/20...Broadly speaking, you are an employee when someone else - AKA the employer - has control over when and where you work and the processes by which you perform the work that you do for that individual. A DJ or bartender under some circumstances, I suppose, might qualify as an independent contractor at a restaurant, but the waitstaff, bus help, hosts, kitchen aides, etc. almost certainly would not. There's always risk in confronting an employer when faced with a situation like yours - my experience is that most employers know full well that they are violating the law when they treat employees as independent contractors, and for that reason they don't tolerate questions about that policy very well - so you definitely should tread cautiously if you want to keep this position. Nonetheless, I think you owe it to yourself to ask whether or not the restaurant intends to withhold federal taxes from your checks - if for no other reason than you don't want to get caught short when it comes to filing your own return, even if you don't intend to challenge the policy.

Do military members have to pay any fee for leave or fiancee forms?
NOOOOOOO. You are talking to a military romance scammer. I received an email from the US Army that directly answers your question that is pasted below please keep reading.I believe you are the victim of a military Romance Scam whereas the person you are talking to is a foreign national posing as an American Soldier claiming to be stationed overseas on a peacekeeping mission. That's the key to the scam they always claim to be on a peacekeeping mission.Part of their scam is saying that they have no access to their money that their mission is highly dangerous. If your boyfriend girlfriend/future husband/wife is asking you to do the following or has exhibited this behavior, it is a most likely a scam:Moves to private messaging site immediately after meeting you on Facebook or SnapChat or Instagram or some dating or social media site. Often times they delete the site you met them on right after they asked you to move to a more private messaging siteProfesses love to you very quickly & seems to quote poems and song lyrics along with using their own sort of broken language, as they profess their love and devotion quickly. They also showed concern for your health and love for your family.Promises marriage as soon as he/she gets to state for leave that they asked you to pay for. They Requests money (wire transfers) and Amazon, iTune ,Verizon, etc gift cards, for medicine, religious practices, and leaves to come home, internet access, complete job assignments, help sick friend, get him out of trouble, or anything that sounds fishy. The military does provide all the soldier needs including food medical Care and transportation for leave. Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed. I am just trying to show you examples that you are most likely being connned.Below is an email response I received after I sent an inquiry to the US government when I discovered I was scammed. I received this wonderful response back with lots of useful links on how to find and report your scammer. And how to learn more about Romance Scams.Right now you can also copy the picture he gave you and do a google image search and you will hopefully see the pictures of the real person he is impersonating. this doesn't always work and take some digging. if you find the real person you can direct message them and alert them that their image is being used for scamming.Good Luck to you and I'm sorry this may be happening to you. please continue reading the government response I received below it's very informative. You have contacted an email that is monitored by the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command. Unfortunately, this is a common concern. We assure you there is never any reason to send money to anyone claiming to be a Soldier online. If you have only spoken with this person online, it is likely they are not a U.S. Soldier at all. Why do ex-employers refuse to fill out the VA form 21-4192 for a vet?
VA Form 21–4192 is an application for disability benefits and like similar state benefits, it must be filled out by the veteran or by his or her qualified representative. This is a private, sensitive, legal document and every dot or dash in it can be critical, so must be accurate and verifiable.Employers have zero responsibility to fill out this form or furnish information for it, however, Social Security would have all the information required that the Department of Defense did not have. The veteran’s DD-214 is likely required, but does not furnish all the information required on the form.

What kinds of RFEs USCIS are imposing on H1B Extensions?
FYI: Effective today, Sept. 11, 2018, USCIS officers are no longer required to issue a Request For Evidence (RFE) or a Notice of Intent to Deny (NOID) and may outright deny an application, petition or request for even minor clerical mistakes.4 major issues with H-1B visas that can trigger an RFE1. Deference to previously approved visasThe first major hurdle for H-1B visa holders came in the form of Policy Memorandum 602-0151 issued on October 23, 2017. The new memorandum rescinded previous guidance, issued April 23, 2004, that gave deference to prior determinations of eligibility for H-1B visa holders filing for extensions that involved the same parties and underlying facts as the initial petition. In other words, USCIS introduced a series of policies with more stringent standards to apply to previously approved petitions.2. Level 1 wageThe second complication to H-1B petitions is wage levels. More H-1B RFEs now question wage level 1. On March 31, 2017, USCIS issued a policy memorandum that put into question the qualification of ‘computer programmer’ as a specialty occupation. Specifically, entry-level positions that require a university degree, but no experience are typically classified under level 1 wage. USCIS has argued that the job duties paying level 1 wages are not complex enough to qualify as specialized but too complex to be considered entry-level because they involve the exercise of judgment and thus require oversight from a wage level 3 supervisor. Quite the predicament.3. Specialty occupationThis brings us to the problem of singular degrees and specialization. USCIS contends that a specialty occupation requires a theoretical and practical application of a body of specialized knowledge and together with at least a bachelor's degree or its equivalent. The issue with the singular degree requirement is that often the coursework of a related degree provides the specialized knowledge needed to perform job duties. For instance, to fill a computer programmer position an applicant does not necessarily require a computer science degree to carry out tasks. Instead, a person with a mathematics or information technology degree can adequately fulfill such job responsibilities. Under the new policy, if an employer determines that an applicant with a mathematics degree is most qualified for a computer programmer position, a technical evaluation must then be submitted with solid documentation demonstrating how the applicant’s coursework is directly connected to the job description, adding time and money to an already complex process.4. Right to controlAnother obstacle to the H-1B visa is the “right to control” in which USCIS scrutinizes the employer-employee relationship by weighing multiple factors such as who directly supervises the H-1B worker and whether supervision is performed on or off-site.If the work is performed off-site, then the method and frequency of supervision are analyzed. USCIS further evaluates the employer-employee relationship in a myriad of ways, most common are: who pays the H-1B worker, sets their hours, directs their daily tasks, is in charge of hiring and firing, provides benefits and claims the worker for tax purposes. The use of proprietary information and whether the end work product is directly linked to the H-1B employer's (petitioner's) business is closely examined. To combat such intrusive investigation by USCIS, project management software that indicates oversight and services provided by all constituents should be used. Furthermore, submitting an itinerary or any and all documentation demonstrating the employer-employee relationship with specific job duties that is signed by all parties can help increase the chances of success.

Have you ever had an elephant in the room moment?
It didn’t happen to me, but to my sister and mother. This happened in the early 70’s in California and things were very different back then. My mother had always been very prim and proper, but she looked at the world a bit differently when she became a divorced mother of eight. My 16 year old sister had fallen in love with the 18 year old neighbor’s boy. They would spend the night in sleeping bags on the living room floor on weekends. I was the “proper” one and would complain to my mother about how unseemly this was. But she referred me to the 18th and 19th century New England tradition of “bundling.”According to the stories, when a suitor visited a farm girl in the winter, it was often too dark and cold for him to return home on horseback or in a wagon. If they were going to be married, the girl’s parents would often let the two young people sleep in the main room with a “bundling board” put between them in the bed or pile of blankets. It was supposed to let them continue talking and getting to know one another, but without physical contact. Apparently, it didn’t really work all that well, as a very high percentage of these brides had “early babies,” meaning they were pregnant before marriage. But these were country people and not hung up on the strict Victorian, virgin until wedding-night expectations. My mother told me that she was sure nothing untoward was going on between my sister and the neighbor boy, that my sister was a good Catholic girl. I just rolled my eyes when she wasn’t looking. One morning, my mother woke up very early and went past the living room towards the kitchen. Unfortunately, she caught the young couple in flagrante delicto! My mother thought the best thing to do was to pretend she didn’t realize what was going on, which is all well and good. However, she did this by stepping into the room and going over her grocery list and the chores she wanted my sister to do later that day. The poor guy was completely freaked out and had backed himself into the furthest corner of the room, while frantically trying to cover himself with a sock. My sister just sat there with her mouth open, blanket pulled up to hide her breasts, while Mom explained exactly what kind of peas she wanted and how my sister should ask the butcher for this cut of meat. Mom completely ignored the boyfriend cowering in the corner the entire time.My sister told me the story, and I later asked my mom about it. “Didn’t you see Gary, naked in the corner?!” With a bit of acid in her voice, she replied that yes, she had and she disapproved. She thought this experience was just a bit of pay back and they would certainly think twice about acting that way in our home again!

How can I fill out Google's intern host matching form to optimize my chances of receiving a match?
I was selected for a summer internship 2016.I tried to be very open while filling the preference form: I choose many products as my favorite products and I said I'm open about the team I want to join.I even was very open in the location and start date to get host matching interviews (I negotiated the start date in the interview until both me and my host were happy.) You could ask your recruiter to review your form (there are very cool and could help you a lot since they have a bigger experience).Do a search on the potential team. Before the interviews, try to find smart question that you are going to ask for the potential host (do a search on the team to find nice and deep questions to impress your host). Prepare well your resume. You are very likely not going to get algorithm/data structure questions like in the first round. It's going to be just some friendly chat if you are lucky. If your potential team is working on something like machine learning, expect that they are going to ask you questions about machine learning, courses related to machine learning you have and relevant experience (projects, internship). Of course you have to study that before the interview. Take as long time as you need if you feel rusty. It takes some time to get ready for the host matching (it's less than the technical interview) but it's worth it of course.
