How can San Francisco solve its homelessness problem without simply kicking all of them out of the city? New York tried to and found a solution that works for the city, but at the expense of the welfare of the homeless.
Some people want to stay homeless. Give it any reason you like, they have no desire to be housed. I can't speak from the perspective of a person who lives in the park and panhandles to have income in this city (btw I'm in a neighborhood in SF). For them it provides them a lifestyle they are comfortable and I don't think that taking that away from them always facilitates their best interest or the community at large. They could figure out what they would rather do, but you'd have to ask them.Medical problems of all kinds lead to homelessness. So does insurmountable debt especially when it's the IRS' unavoidable payment of debt. I met a few in the homeless shelters that came from real middle class incomes and simply couldn't get out of the hole without a large income. Try earning $3K a month and having an IRS levy taking $2700 a month from you. You can't make a car payment, you lose your car, you can't get to work you lose your job. You sell every thing you own until you can't pay your rent, you're in a homeless shelter. There isn't a lot you can do on $300 a month. All of the sudden - You're receiving General Assistance and Food Stamps and if you find a new job you're going to have a window of about 2 months before the IRS finds your income and levy's it. Your boss isn't going to like you very much because he/she now has to do extra accounting and is basically getting punished for hiring you because you're a scab if he can fire you, he will. Never mind that it's nearly impossible to get that job when you're living out of a draw in your 90 day bed. So if you find a job it's going to be minimum wage and your debt is enormous. Maybe you were low income and you had no healthcare because you didn't know they even had Healthy San Francisco until after you were in so much pain that you couldn't work anymore. Now you have permanent nerve damage, you're in a wheel chair, you've become mentally ill because enough stress can make anyone crazy. You're panicked and you can't get a job because you're so desperate you freak out anyone who does respond to your mentally charged cover letter and resume in the interviews. You can't do a lot of basic jobs because you're handicapped and the processes involved in being trained for a new career are so bureaucratic it's crazier than you are. Quite a few of these people do drugs and have a tendency to abuse alcohol from the top to the bottom. I'd guesstimate that the number of people in the shelter system (the bottom two groups and the mentally challenged that live in shelters) who are redeemable is around 30%. Most would smoke mild enough drugs and drink within the limits of a normal person if they had peace of mind. All they need is a runway. A job isn't necessarily the end all fix it all solution for everyone. I want a "crate of discovery" of what is possible for homeless and unemployed people in San FranciscoWhen you want to know what inspires children, you put them in a room full of what is possible and you sit back and wait to see what they want to take out of the room and keep. We are all children, some of us just have older faces. When you want to find out what will grow in dead soil you throw in every kind of seed and see what grows.Like any initiative start with what can be accomplished and pare the problem down until it's more deeply understood. http://cozylap.wordpress.com for more about my domain expertise.

How did Bill Ayers of the Weather Underground not go to jail for his involvement in the New York City police department bombings?
Mr. Ayers was wanted by the F.B.I. in 1970. Federal riot and bombing conspiracy charges against him were dropped in 1974 because of illegal wiretaps and other prosecutorial misconduct. — Obama and ’60s Bomber: A Look Into Crossed PathsIn the mid-'70s, the federal charges against Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn were dismissed because of government misconduct. Yet, the couple stayed underground for several more years. "I hated the idea of turning ourselves in," Dohrn says. "Bill was ready to do it in '76, '77. But I resisted. He was sweet and patient, as he always is, to let me come to my senses on my own."They surrendered in 1980. Dohrn had to plea-bargain away the state charges. She was sentenced to three years' probation and paid a $1,500 fine. — Change of Subject: The calm after the storm -- School reform crusader Bill Ayers works within the system now, but don't ask the former Weatherman to apologize for his radical pastThere was no hard evidence against Ayers. All the charges were for various conspiracies. Today, the only proof of Ayers physical involvement is his memoir about his life on the run; “Fugitive Days.” In the book, when Ayers says “we did this,” he talking about the group, not his personal involvement. Generally reviewed by his Weather Underground peers as “a dubious memory.” Studs Terkel called the book "a deeply moving elegy to all those young dreamers who tried to live decently in an indecent world". [4]Ayers on the left. Kathy Boudin and Judith Clark in the center. Ayers’ future wife on the far right. Ayers and Dohrn adopted Boudin son, Chesa.Today, Chesa Boudin is an American lawyer and a candidate in the 2019 election for San Francisco District Attorney. How far out of New York City will I have to go for a refresher course in barrel riding with a decently trained quarter horse?
Why don’t you look up barrel racing trainers on google? I don’t think you will find a lot of barrel racing trainers in New York. And while some barrel racing trainers have a schooled horse you can ride, most expect you to buy a horse.

How do I get a good sample of people, only from specific cities like Los Angeles, New York, or San Diego, to vote on my online poll or fill out my short survey online?
What about posting in their local Craigslist?

I'm thinking of heading to New York city by myself for a weekend. I want to be safe but I don't want to do the touristy things. I want to experience the best things that the people living there appreciate the most. How do I find out what that is?
One Weekend is quite a short time to experience the life of locals anywhere. Anyway, I will share my experience with you. I visited NY last year for ten days. I stayed in New Jersey, near Journal Square, with a friend. The following are what I did1. Use the subway to commute. It is used by the locals on a daily basis. Don't take cabs unless absolutely necessary, which is almost never. 2. Spend time relaxing at New Port, near the docks. It's a long stretch and gives a spectacular view of the New York skyline. If you are a photographer, you would love the location and even if you are not, you would still be able to get some nice shots. There is a track that you can use for a run/jog or just sit back on a bench sipping coffee. 3. Spend a day on foot, randomly going through the streets of Little Italy and Chinatown. Lots of restaurants with good food. You can buy souvenirs for friends and family; don't forget to bargain, a lot. There is a park (Columbus Park), occupied by old folks mostly, engulfed in their favorite past times like playing cards, musical iinstruments, etc.. 4. Rent a bike and go into the Central Park. You can spend more than a couple of hours there. 5. Try out the street food, bakeries, steakhouses, etc. I used to eat mostly from street vendors; some had quite delicious lamb over rice. 6. Take a walk from Herald Square to Times Square. There was one cathedral in that area which you can visit. Not exactly sure but it was near Herald square. If you still get time, you could visit the beach, the Met and other touristy places. Enjoy!
