An ADS isn’t needed for a provisional patent application. You should fill out for SB/16, a provisional cover sheet and submit it with your application. I moved to the UK from NYC in 1992, to marry my love. That same year, I turned 40.Now, first, I have to point out that my father was a very well respected doctor, who had a private practice for many years. He treated his staff well, and made house calls, and often saw people for free. When I got sick, I mostly asked his advice, or he treated me.However, I felt that, as an adult, I should find my own doctor in NYC. I had a small IT company, and an extremely good insurance agent, who got us inexpensive health insurance. I still had to pay the first $100, and there was an annual limit, but it was affordable.Unless — and here’s the catch — the insurance company disallowed certain procedures. I once had to pay $850 for treatment for severe pain in my ears, which ended up as earwax removal, because the tests imposed by the practice I went to were disallowed.My sister once cut her hand badly, and had to wait in the emergency room of the nearest hospital for six hours, bleeding and in pain. That was expensive.On holiday in the US, some years later, I broke my thumb skiing. Fortunately, I had very good travel insurance, because I would never have been able to pay the hospital bill, the anaesthetists bill and the surprise bill that turned up six weeks after the others, from some other doctor; I can’t remember the total, but I think it was over $10,000.Over here? I have a persistent eye problem, very painful, probably caused by getting measles when I was young (before the vaccine was developed). In the US, when I went to a doctor, he sneered at me and told me it was probably caused by a herpetic infection, and nothing could be done. Cost? After the deductible, about $250 in the late ‘80s. Here, after a number of examinations, I was referred to Moorfields Eye Hospital, one of the leading eye centres in the world, where they did a thorough exam, told me precisely what the underlying cause was (although they didn’t know about the measles; I only made the connection later) and gave me ointments. Cost? Nothing.I have never had to wait too long, and there is always a numbered queueing system. The staff are invariably friendly, professional and reassuring.In the city where my mother-in-law lives, she has had a number of tests, been picked up by paramedics after a collapse, seen by district health care professionals when she has had illnesses that are related to her dementia. Always professional, concerned and thorough. And free.So, yes. I find that the healthcare in the UK is better. It is in desperate need of proper funding, better organisation and better salaries and care for the dedicated people who work there, and who are losing their morale. That, however, is due to government stupidity, inability to manage, and the crazy desire to emulate the profit-driven US system.Sorry, I could go on for ages and pages about US healthcare, but I tell you: it’s not all that.

You need a lot of information besides just annual income to calculate approximate tax. Stuff like are you married or single? do you have dependents? do you pay interest on student loans or mortgage?But I can tell you that as a single female graduate student I paid approximately $1500 in federal income tax on a stipend of 32K per year. Since you are in CA you will also be charged state tax which you will have to calculate separately. But my best guess is that you will end up paying approximately 10-11% of your total stipend in taxes.

This is my story with TCS Kolkata.I cracked the national qualifier test of TCS and was called for the interview.With all the preparations I entered the interview room. My cv- subjects of interest- data structures using c and basic electronics. Hobbies- writing, listening to music. I am an ece student.There were two persons seated. They started with my hobbies and asked about what I write. I said that I write articles for a website. They asked more questions about my articles,the last article I wrote and to summarize that article maybe to validate stuffs. I answered everything pretty confidently and also summarized the article. Then they asked about my favorite singer followed by some questions on him . Questions like where does he stay and all. Since I knew everything I answered all their questions correctly.Then they started asking technical questions. They asked questions from Data structures, logic gates, other basic electronics and programming questions. There was not a single question that I failed to answer.I even wrote linked list codes and explained everything in detail. They seemed pretty happy and I was enjoying every moment of the interview as was clear with the subtle joy on our faces.Then they asked me to wait outside. Within 2 minutes of that I was called again and this time there were three of them . One man added,who probably was an HR.He asked me hr questions and I answered all of them correctly and smartly not making a single grammatical mistake. Then the hr asked questions about technical too. I could answer all of them.He asked about my projects too and I explained what is an Arduino,what is the difference between a microprocessor and a microcontroller.At the end, he asked for my documents including 10th, 12th marksheets and graduation marksheets. He asked me if I could work for long hours, weekends as there are times of heavy workload. He also asked me if I'm comfortable re-locating to which I affirmed.He packed up asking me if I'm aware of the TCS bond which makes me pay 50k INR if I leave the company within 1 year of joining.When I came out I was the happiest guy on the planet who just finished his dream interview.The results were supposed to be revealed within 2 days but it came after 8 days. Those 8 days have been a great deal of anxiety, stress but above all happy and full of expectations. I was so sure of the job that I planned my life abiding the company.When the result came out my name wasn't there. Some students of my college who can't speak proper English and can't write codes got selected.There's no one logic I could apply to support their basis of selection.Last few days since the rejection, have been the toughest days of my life. The same happened to few more friends like me. They too had awesome interviews but bore negative outcome. And why'd they ask me to present all marksheets at the end, by when they have decided what to do with me? Telling me about their bonds and all in the last was equally useless.If any of the TCS HR is reading this, don't try to answer, as the statistics of my college selection has made it known that the selection process is bizarre. You should not do this as the society thinks cracking a job interview has something to do with capabilities which should be the case. Also you lead students to depression.I'm not placed yet,just devastated, dissing life and it's rules. Hope to get placed with a better company or at least something who needs good employees. :)EDIT 1 : Okay so since a lot of people were eager to know where my fate ends with this placement season, I'd like to share one of the best news of my life. THINK & LEARN , popularly known as BYJU's came to our campus for recruitment on December 4th '18. They were offering 7lpa(fixed) + 3lpa(incentive) which makes it 10lpa for the post of BDA(Business Development Associate). Some 200 students appeared for the drive and 31 students cleared the GD followed by PI . 8 students were provided with the final job offer and with the blessings of almighty I was one of the 8. It had been a very tough phase of life I must say, getting rejected from so many companies. I started doubting on my abilities and that is the worst part of the story. For the BYJU's drive it was equally tough for me to pretend enthusiastic and excited self of mine while deep inside I'm shattered, depressed and lacking hope with almost everything. But prior to the drive,I did enough research about the company's product and gathered enough ideas why I think the product is awesome. I spoke about my ideas very confidently no matter what reaction the interviewer was retaliating and there was nothing extraordinary about my interview this time. I know I should not say this but since I've seen some very hard days of life I must admit that I'm very very happy that I ended up with a package which is thrice of that of TCS, the company I got rejected from. Also if I wouldn't have got rejected from TCS I wouldn't have been allowed to apply for the BYJU'S drive so that is also something I'd like to thank God and TCS for.

I'm a hacker who served 4.5 months of a 9 month sentence 5 years ago. I was in two jails in that time, spending the majority of the time in the second, lower security place. The experience totally changed me, but in a positive way.First of all, I actually had a lot of fun in jail. My education made certain aspects of the prison system very easy for me to navigate, such as legal documentation and debating with guards. My ability to mend broken electronics very quickly became known. These things made me feel very safe, since people were actively protecting me. It also made me feel quite important in the community.It started when someone came to me and asked what I knew about mending mobile phones. In UK jails, many people have mobiles, usually obtained by over-the-fence smuggling. Pay-as-you-go credit vouchers are a major form of currency. This guy was very important on the wing - he had a crew of other guys who walked around with him and people often came to pay him. I said I knew enough about phones, and what did he want? He explained that someone had owed him money but couldn't pay. He'd taken the guy's phone as payment, but the phone was pin-locked and he couldn't get in. The phone was an old Samsung, one which I knew (having previously owned one) didn't impose any limit on the number of pin attempts. So I told the guy: yeah, I know a few tricks. But I need to get my tools out so I'll do it overnight. (Note: I didn't have any tools). The guy left me with the phone overnight, and I sat up through the night to try all 10,000 possible 4-digit combinations. Thankfully, the correct code turned up in the mid 2000s. So the next day this guy turned up and was amazed that I had figured out the code. He went round telling everyone that I was some tech wizard and that people should always come to me with their problems. In return for the job he arranged for me to have a Playstation 2 in my cell for two weeks, and to get access to a phone whenever I wanted. For the rest of my time, people would bring me trivially broken electronics and I would retire for the evening to make it out like I was doing something difficult, then return the fixed item the next day. It massively increased my quality of life in there.Secondly, it opened my eyes to how people less fortunate than me live their lives, and how terrible the prison system is for most people. Many, many people in jail were severely mentally ill. There was no support for them. Some were killed in jail, either by inmates or staff, because they flipped out and people got scared. Another large group of people were hopelessly addicted to very harmful drugs. People who exploited this group were the most powerful - they would have drugs smuggled in, then build an army of addicts who would do their bidding to get the next fix. It was a really explosive situation. Almost every act of violence was drug debt related. Immigrants were completely screwed in jail, because there was no way for them to navigate the bureaucracy. I helped several people avoid deportation, including one cell-mate who had a hit contract out on him in Jamaica because he defended his business when yardies tried to extort him. He couldn't read or write, so he couldn't fill out the asylum application. His patois was so strong that his lawyer couldn't really understand what he said, and the border agency was going to send him back to Jamaica to be killed. I wrote letters to the border agency, the prison governor and the home secretary and he was granted asylum and an interpreter was arranged so that his legal visits would be more productive. Hundreds of others in similar situations go without that help every year.Thirdly, I saw some horrible things. For example: 'syruping' - when someone mixes sugar into a bucket of boiling water and dumps it on someone's face. The dissolved sugar makes the boiling water cling to the skin longer, and the skin peels off leaving the raw flesh exposed. I also saw someone held down by four guys, who performed anal surgery on him with a sharpened spoon to extract drugs he was hiding. He later maimed all four of his assailants, stabbing them in the neck with a pen (saw that too). Another was a guy who was clearly paranoid schizophrenic. His cell was opposite mine. He started screaming one night and barricaded himself in. He then stripped off and covered himself with baby oil, and started setting fire to his cell. The guards came in riot gear to tackle him, but he was so slippery it was like trying to catch an eel. He gave them the run around for quite a while before they eventually held him down and injected him* and he was carried away screaming. He died in hospital.Fourthly, I felt so ashamed of myself that I changed my life forever. I was a middle class white kid with a great education who got obsessed with hacking and document security as a teenager and went down for figuring out how to replicate the driving license, thus throwing away many of the advantages that luck, society and my parents had given me. Everyone else in there had no such advantages. Most of them were born to a life where poverty, drugs, violence and lack of education all being concentrated in their environment led to them being systematically channeled into prison. I was there essentially through misplaced intellectual curiosity, while others were there because their lives were so bad out of jail that crime was actually a rational survival choice. Society failed them, while it tried to hold me up with both hands. I was, and am, disgusted with myself. Upon leaving jail I learned programming, worked freelance to pay for my tuition while I got a degree, got a PhD position, and am now working towards spending my life using my skills as efficiently as I can to improve the lives of as many people as possible. If I ever have a lazy moment, I just have to cast my mind back to prison, and the disgust with myself rises up again, and I launch myself back into work with an energy I never knew I had before prison.Finally, I would say that my criminal record has not held me back. I no longer have to legally disclose it**, but when I did I always did so with a letter explaining some of the circumstances and how deeply it had affected my life. I had several positive comments about my disclosure, and I have never been turned down for a job I've applied for. It doesn't have to hold you back - your attitude has to convince a potential employer that your background makes you a great candidate, not a worse one.*This has been corrected: In my haste to write the post I previously wrote that a dart was used, when in fact it was a needle. Thanks to Marty Bee for pointing out that this was not likely.**For those who are curious, a conviction becomes 'spent' in the UK after a certain time. The times were recently reduced in a little publicised law (Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012), so my conviction was 'spent' after 48 months.

Trust me, I lived it, you are probably being scammed. You should aim for maximal functionality without having to sign up or login – and you don't have to take my word for it. Apple strongly suggests the same in one of the 2012 WWDC UI design videos.So if you want to be in their good graces for promotional opportunities, etc, think about how much of your product you can deliver without having the user logged in.Indulgence of Apple aside, this is just better app design for many products. Sign up, even when asking minimal information, just feels like a chore. No one launches an app eager to fill out forms. Instead of leading with friction, give 'em a treat for having launched your app. Give them a reason to stay awhile, make them want to do something worth signing up for.Some apps can safely ignore this advice – Facebook is an obvious example. It is 100% dependent on identity. Dating apps probably fall into similar categories. For everyone else, though, you want to maximize your chance of creating an enthusiastic user. It's a user's market – they can go across the street if they don't like what you're offering. But if they stay and love it so much they have to tell their friends, tweet about it? What I mean by this is that: when we talk to each other, passing in the halls or just living out our lives, those moments disappear. Snapchat emulates that behavior and psychology.Snapchat was started at a time when everybody and their mom thought they were an entrepreneur who could launch a successful social app. Facebook was where you went for updates on family and friends, Instagram was beautiful photo content, and Twitter was the conversation at a cocktail party. These three social giants dominated most of the conversation, but they all played off of each other in terms of functionality, and, most importantly, audience. However, Snapchat was able to counterbalance the strengths of all three players and create a new social pipeline.The norm of the internet age is to create platforms in which everything is saved—everything is stored and documented digitally. By August 2014, 40% of 18 year olds in the US were using Snapchat on a daily basis.The biggest update in recent Snapchat history, and the one that really changed the game for me to push it towards the mainstream, has to be Discover.SNAPCHAT BECOMES A MEDIA DESTINATIONIn early 2015, Snapchat launched Discover. It’s a feature that allows users to receive content provided by top media companies. Launch participants included National Geographic, Vice, ESPN, and more. Eleven participants in all started it off. It was, and still is, a serious play to be part of Snapchat Discover because it puts a company in a very aggressive place within the overall user interface of the app and delivers an unmatched form of attention from their youthful user base. It also completely changed the swipe navigation and how the app is used.It was very exciting step forward for Snapchat. It was obvious they were paying attention to current trends and were ready to act: the explosion of content and companies becoming media companies, putting out their own content, the importance of mobile being first.Using Discover as their platform, Snapchat went out and made deals that allowed them to curate some of the top content providers in the world in this one spot. This gives them more power in the micromanagement of what shows up on the Discover page.The brands that launched as partners, and the 18 brands now currently in the space, have an enormous relationship with Snapchat, and they are getting great equity for it. Why? 45% of Snapchat’s users are under 25.There are over 100 million users, nearing 200 million. Snapchat is basically handing these brands the 25-and-under demo. So it’s no surprise that these media companies have hired entire teams around the initiative. Departments of education and school districts always have to make decisions about what to include in their curriculum.  There are a lot of life skills that people need that aren't taught in school.  The question is should those skills be taught in schools?I teach high school, so I'll talk about that.  The typical high school curriculum is supposed to give students a broad-based education that prepares them to be citizens in a democracy and to be able to think critically.  For a democracy to work, we need educated, discerning citizens with the ability to make good decisions based on evidence and objective thought.  In theory, people who are well informed about history, culture, science, mathematics, etc., and are capable of critical, unbiased thinking, will have the tools to participate in a democracy and make good decisions for themselves and for society at large.  In addition to that, they should be learning how to be learners, how to do effective, basic research, and collaborate with other people.  If that happens, figuring out how to do procedural tasks in real life should not provide much of a challenge.  We can't possibly teach every necessary life skill people need, but we can help students become better at knowing how to acquire the skills they need.  Should we teach them how to change a tire when they can easily consult a book or search the internet to find step by step instructions for that?  Should we teach them how to balance a check book or teach them how to think mathematically and make sense of problems so that the simple task of balancing a check book (which requires simple arithmetic and the ability to enter numbers and words in columns and rows in obvious ways) is easy for them to figure out.  If we teach them to be good at critical thinking and have some problem solving skills they will be able to apply those overarching skills to all sorts of every day tasks that shouldn't be difficult for someone with decent cognitive ability  to figure out.  It's analogous to asking why a culinary school didn't teach its students the steps and ingredients to a specific recipe.  The school taught them about more general food preparation and food science skills so that they can figure out how to make a lot of specific recipes without much trouble.  They're also able to create their own recipes.So, do we want citizens with very specific skill sets that they need to get through day to day life or do we want citizens with critical thinking, problem solving, and other overarching cognitive skills that will allow them to easily acquire ANY simple, procedural skill they may come to need at any point in their lives?
