What an Additional Work Order Is

An Additional Work Order is a written amendment to an existing contract or work order that documents changes in scope, schedule, quantity, materials, or price for a defined portion of a project. It clarifies responsibilities, records agreed adjustments to compensation or timelines, and becomes part of the contract once executed by authorized parties. Additional Work Orders are commonly used in construction, professional services, and facilities maintenance to formalize change requests and reduce disputes by providing a clear, dated record of what differs from the original agreement.

Why a Clear Additional Work Order Matters

A well-drafted Additional Work Order prevents misunderstandings, documents authorization for extra work or cost changes, supports invoicing and lien rights, and creates a traceable record for audits and dispute resolution.

Why a Clear Additional Work Order Matters

Who Typically Prepares and Signs This Document

The Additional Work Order is used by parties who must record and approve changes to an active contract.

  • General contractor or prime contractor responsible for coordinating and authorizing subcontractor scope changes.
  • Project manager or client representative who approves schedule and budget adjustments.
  • Subcontractors or vendors providing the additional labor, materials, or services being authorized.

Use signatures from authorized representatives to ensure enforceability and maintain proper project records.
