What the Animal Welfare Non-Animal Testing Statement Is

The Animal Welfare Non-Animal Testing Statement documents an organization’s commitment to not using animals for testing, describing policies, scope, and verification steps. It is used by manufacturers, laboratories, retailers, and research groups to communicate product or program status to regulators, partners, procurement teams, and the public. The statement typically explains definitions, covered products or processes, exclusion criteria, monitoring or audit plans, and contact information for compliance questions. It supports transparency, supplier due diligence, and alignment with corporate animal welfare policies.

Why a Clear Statement Matters and Its Legal Context

A concise, accurate statement reduces regulatory risk, supports supplier and retail due diligence, and improves stakeholder trust. When distributed with contracts or product documentation, it clarifies commitments and helps avoid misrepresentation claims under consumer protection laws. Electronic versions executed under ESIGN or UETA are generally enforceable for interstate transactions; confirm any narrow statutory exceptions for specific document types before relying on electronic execution.

Practical Examples and Comparable Use Cases

Organizations use these statements as supplier attestations, product labels, and procurement attachments across sectors.

Optica Ventures LLC

A small manufacturer standardized a non-animal testing statement for all consumer lines to simplify vendor checks.

  • The change reduced review back-and-forth.
  • The company attached audit summaries and supplier attestations so retail buyers could complete compliance reviews without repeated inquiries, shortening procurement cycles.

Fertility Centers of Illinois

A clinical organization provided a non-animal testing attestation for certain diagnostic products used in clinics.

  • They combined it with technical validation reports.
  • By keeping a central record repository and dated attestations, the center supported internal audits and vendor contract negotiations more efficiently.

Practical Tips for Accurate and Efficient Completion

Follow these best practices to reduce review time and maintain defensible records.

Use Precise Language
Avoid ambiguous terms; be specific about which products and dates are covered to limit misinterpretation and liability.
Attach Evidence
Include summaries of test methods and third-party certificates to support the claim and speed vendor acceptance.
Maintain Audit Trails
Record reviewer names, dates, and version history to demonstrate governance and defensive due diligence.
Align with Contracts
Reference the statement in supplier agreements or purchase orders so obligations are clear and enforceable.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Overbroad claims such as 'never tested on animals' without documented supplier verification can lead to consumer protection complaints and contract disputes.
  • Failing to define the statement's scope—for example, omitting timeframes or product lines—creates ambiguity that hinders audits and procurement checks.
  • Relying on unsigned or undated attestations makes it difficult to prove when a claim was made or who authorized it during a dispute.
  • Using inconsistent formats and storage locations for supporting records increases review time and the risk of missing evidence during audits.

Penalties, Liabilities, and Risks of Inaccurate Statements

Regulatory Action: Civil enforcement
Consumer Claims: False advertising suits
Contract Liability: Breach damages
Reputational Harm: Loss of trust
Supply Chain Disruption: Vendor recalls
