What the Application for Striping Is

The Application for Striping is a municipal or agency form used to request permission to install pavement markings, parking lot striping, bike lanes, crosswalks, or lane reconfigurations on public rights-of-way or regulated private property. It typically documents the applicant, project location, proposed layout, traffic control measures, materials, contractor information, insurance and liability coverage, and a site diagram. Agencies use the application to assess safety, maintenance, sightlines, and compliance with local standards before issuing a permit, license, or approval for installation and ongoing maintenance responsibilities.

Why Completing This Application Matters

A correctly completed Application for Striping establishes legal authorization to modify road or parking markings, reduces liability for the installer and property owner, and helps agencies review traffic safety impacts efficiently.

Why Completing This Application Matters

Who Typically Submits or Reviews This Application

Common parties involved in an Application for Striping include contractors, property owners, municipal traffic engineers, and public works staff.

  • Contractors and installers who perform striping work and need permits or municipal approvals for public or regulated private sites.
  • Property owners, property managers, and facility operations teams requesting changes to parking layouts or pedestrian routes.
  • Local government staff (traffic engineers, public works, permit clerks) who evaluate safety, visibility, and maintenance obligations.

Each stakeholder has distinct responsibilities: applicants provide accurate plans and insurance, while agencies verify compliance with design and safety standards.

Step-by-step: Filling Out the Application for Striping

Follow these ordered steps to prepare a complete application for agency review and to reduce processing delays.

  • 01
    1. Identify Project: Describe location, scope, and purpose clearly.
  • 02
    2. Provide Contacts: Enter applicant and contractor names, phone, and email.
  • 03
    3. Attach Plans: Upload a scaled site plan and layout diagram.
  • 04
    4. Include Insurance: Provide proof of insurance and indemnification terms.

How to set up an online application workflow

Configure a digital workflow to collect data, attachments, and approvals consistently and to create an audit trail for each submission.

Field Configuration
Template Create a reusable application template with required fields and attachments.
Conditional Fields Show contractor and insurance fields only when applicant selects 'Contractor-installed'.
Notifications Enable email alerts for reviewers and the applicant at each stage.
Attachments Require PDF site plan and proof of insurance as mandatory uploads.

Delivery options and technical format requirements

Agencies accept applications through online portals, email, in-person drop-off, or third-party eSubmission platforms depending on local procedures.

  • File Formats: PDF, DOCX, and high-resolution JPEG/PNG accepted
  • Integrations: Supports Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, NetSuite
  • Authentication: Email verification, SMS code, or account-based sign-in

Choose the method required by the authority having jurisdiction; when available, use secure eSubmission to preserve timestamps and audit trails.

Where to submit and how the routing works

Most applications follow a standard routing path from submission through technical review to final approval or permit issuance.

  • Online Portal: Submit via the municipality's permit portal when available.
  • Public Works: Routes to public works for traffic and safety review.
  • Traffic Engineering: Engineering reviews sightlines, material, and layout compliance.
  • Permit Issuance: Clerk issues permit with conditions and effective dates.

Essential elements to include with your application

Ensure the application contains these six elements so reviewers can evaluate constructability, safety, and ongoing maintenance obligations without follow-up requests.

Site Diagram

Scaled plan showing curb lines, lanes, parking stalls, and proposed striping locations with dimensions and orientation.

Work Description

Concise narrative of materials, paints, line widths, colors, and proposed installation sequence or phasing.

Traffic Control Plan

Temporary traffic control measures during installation and provisions to protect workers and road users.

Insurance Certificate

Proof of liability insurance listing the agency as additional insured where required.

Photos

Current site photos showing existing conditions, obstructions, and sightlines.

Material Specs

Manufacturer data sheets for paint, thermoplastic, or tapes proposed for use.

Common preparation mistakes that slow approvals

  • Submitting an unscaled or illegible site plan that prevents accurate measurements and review.
  • Omitting insurance or contractor license details required for indemnification and bonding checks.
  • Failing to include traffic control plans or pedestrian protection provisions for active roadways.
  • Using vague descriptions like 'stripe area' without quantities, dimensions, or material specifications.

Data and security details to provide and protect

Encryption: AES-256 at rest, TLS 1.2/1.3 in transit
Audit Trail: Include timestamps, IP addresses, and signer actions
HIPAA BAA: Required only if application contains protected health information

Liability Exposure: Insufficient insurance increases contractor and owner risk
Rework Costs: Non-compliant striping may require removal and reinstallation
Permit Revocation: Failure to follow permit conditions can lead to revocation

Typical timelines and agency processing expectations

Processing time varies by jurisdiction, workload, and whether the application is complete; submit early and account for inspection scheduling.

Application Review Time:

Varies widely; expect 7–30 business days depending on agency

Inspection Scheduling:

Inspections commonly booked 3–10 business days after request

Permit Effective Date:

Renewal or Extension:

Extensions may be requested before permit expiration per agency rules

Urgent Requests:

Expedited review may be available for an additional fee in some jurisdictions

Practical tips for a faster, error-free application

Apply these best practices to reduce review time and avoid requests for additional information.

Use Standard Templates
