What an Artist Teaching Contract Covers

An Artist Teaching Contract is a written agreement that sets out the relationship between an artist or instructor and the hiring party for a teaching engagement. It defines the services to be provided, dates and schedule, compensation, expenses, materials, intellectual property and licensing of student work, confidentiality, cancellation and termination terms, liability and insurance expectations, and any venue or equipment responsibilities. The contract can be a standalone document or part of a broader engagement packet and serves to reduce misunderstandings and provide enforceable remedies if either party fails to perform.

Why a Clear Contract Matters for Teaching Engagements

A written Artist Teaching Contract clarifies expectations, protects payment and intellectual property rights, and reduces disputes. It also documents schedules and cancellation policies so both parties can plan and manage resources effectively.

Why a Clear Contract Matters for Teaching Engagements

Who Typically Uses an Artist Teaching Contract

Artists and organizations use this contract whenever instruction, workshops, or course series are arranged for compensation or exchange of value.

  • Freelance artists leading single workshops or multi-session classes at community centers or private studios.
  • Educational institutions, museums, and continuing-education programs hiring artists as adjunct instructors.
  • Galleries, arts organizations, or event producers contracting artists for on-site demonstrations or classes.

Use the contract to document roles and payment, and adapt it to whether the engagement is a one-off workshop, recurring class, residency, or institutional program.
