What a Business Communication Split Letter Is

A Business Communication Split Letter is a written notice that separates or allocates responsibility, information, or correspondence between two or more corporate parties or departments. It formally records which party handles specific duties, contacts, or contract components while preserving a single underlying agreement or transaction. Organizations use split letters to reduce ambiguity in multi-party deals, clarify billing or data-sharing responsibilities, and document handoff points without reissuing primary contracts. The format is adaptable to procurement, vendor management, finance, and regulatory reporting contexts where distinct obligations must be assigned and traceably communicated.

Why use a Split Letter in business communications

A split letter reduces ambiguity by allocating actions and contacts clearly between parties, supports auditability by documenting who does what, and limits disputes by creating written responsibility boundaries while leaving core contracts intact.
