What the Business FDD Document Is and Why It Matters

A Business FDD Document (Franchise Disclosure Document) is a standardized legal disclosure prepared by a franchisor that summarizes the business relationship, fees, financial performance representations, and contractual obligations provided to prospective franchisees. It consolidates company background, franchise system descriptions, itemized initial and ongoing costs, required training, territory definitions, litigation history, and sample franchise agreements. The document supports regulatory compliance where state franchise registration applies and furnishes prospective buyers with the information they need to evaluate risks, costs, and operational requirements before signing a franchise agreement.

Why a Clear Business FDD Document Helps Stakeholders

A Business FDD Document gives prospective franchisees clear, consolidated disclosures of costs, legal obligations, and historical performance so they can make informed investment decisions and comply with state registration or disclosure requirements when applicable.

  • Prospective franchisees assessing financials, obligations, and territory rights before signing
