What a Business Findings Document Contains

A Business Findings Document summarizes investigation results, analysis, and recommendations about a specific project, transaction, or operational issue. It typically includes an executive summary, scope, methodology, key observations, data sources, quantified findings, and prioritized recommendations. The document is used to inform decision-makers, support contract negotiations, satisfy due diligence requirements, or create an audit trail for compliance reviews. Language should be factual and verifiable, with exhibits and source citations where relevant. Properly prepared, the document clarifies risks, outlines corrective steps, and preserves a record for future review or legal scrutiny.

Why this document matters for stakeholders

A concise Business Findings Document converts raw evidence into actionable recommendations and a defendable record. It reduces ambiguity during negotiations, supports compliance checks, and provides consistent information for internal approvals and external reviewers.

Common preparation mistakes to avoid

  • Omitting supporting exhibits or raw data, which undermines the credibility of conclusions and complicates verification.

  • Not confirming signer authority or consent, risking invalid signatures or disputes during implementation.

Inaccurate conclusions: Legal exposure or poor decisions
Missing signatures: Challenges to enforceability
Late delivery: Contractual penalties possible
HIPAA violations: Civil penalties and corrective action
