What a Business IDI Report Is and when it’s used

A Business IDI Report documents findings from one-on-one in-depth interviews (IDIs) conducted to explore customer needs, stakeholder perspectives, or market hypotheses. It summarizes objectives, methodology, participant profiles, verbatim highlights, thematic analysis, and recommended actions. Organizations use the report to inform product decisions, marketing strategies, sales messaging, or internal process improvements. The document should be structured for clarity so stakeholders can quickly review conclusions, supporting evidence, and applicable next steps without reading full transcripts.

Why a clear Business IDI Report matters

A well‑prepared IDI report converts qualitative interviews into actionable insights, preserves participant consent and confidentiality, and creates an auditable record that supports decision-making across teams. It also reduces rework by standardizing interview notes and deliverables.

Why a clear Business IDI Report matters

Who typically prepares and reviews this report

Teams and roles that create or rely on Business IDI Reports.

  • Product managers and UX researchers who run interviews and synthesize findings for product roadmaps.
  • Marketing and customer success teams using insights for messaging, segmentation, and retention tactics.
  • Legal, compliance, or HR reviewers confirming consent, redaction, and recordkeeping before distribution.

Align authorship and review responsibilities early to avoid delays and privacy oversights.

Common mistakes to avoid when preparing an IDI report

  • Failing to obtain explicit recorded or written consent before recording interviews, which can lead to legal or ethical issues and require deletion of data.
  • Using inconsistent participant identifiers or mixing identifiable and anonymized data without clear linkage, which risks accidental re-identification.
  • Neglecting to store consent forms and audit trails securely, preventing proof of permission for later use or publication.
  • Delivering raw transcripts without redaction for sensitive content, exposing the organization to privacy or reputational risk.

Legal and compliance risks to document

Privacy breach: Civil liability risk
Recording law: Two‑party consent exposure
HIPAA: Protected health information risk
FERPA: Student record restrictions
Contract disputes: Incomplete signatures jeopardize enforceability
Data retention: Failure to meet regulatory retention
