What the Business iPad Usage Agreement Covers

The Business iPad Usage Agreement documents terms, responsibilities, and controls for company-issued iPad devices. It sets required device configurations, access and app installation rules, data handling and privacy expectations, and procedures for loss, theft, damage, and return. The agreement clarifies who may access corporate resources, whether personal use is permitted, and which signatures or approvals are required. It also explains how electronic acceptance and retention are handled consistent with ESIGN and state electronic-transaction rules.

Why a Written Agreement Matters for Company iPads

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Preparing the Agreement

  • Failing to define personal use boundaries leads to data commingling and disputes over responsibility for backups and privacy protections.
  • Omitting mandatory MDM enrollment clauses prevents remote wipe, device management, and secure provisioning when a device is lost or an employee leaves.
  • Using weak authentication or failing to document electronic-consent procedures can weaken enforceability under ESIGN and UETA.
  • Not specifying return condition or reimbursement for damage creates ambiguity and potential cost recovery disputes with departing employees.

HIPAA Violation: Potential penalties and breach-notification obligations
Contract Dispute: Counterclaims, damages, and litigation expenses
Operational Loss: Loss of access to corporate apps and data
