What the Business Market Selection Document Is

A Business Market Selection Document is a structured decision record that identifies, evaluates, and ranks target markets for a product, service, or business unit. It combines market criteria, quantitative scoring, competitive context, customer segmentation, and risk factors into a single, auditable document used by strategy, product, sales, and legal teams to guide go-to-market choices and resource allocation.

Why a Formal Market Selection Record Matters

Using a formal Business Market Selection Document improves transparency, aligns stakeholders on selection criteria, and creates an auditable record for budget and compliance reviews. It reduces subjective decisions, documents assumptions, and preserves the rationale behind market prioritization for future reassessments or regulatory review.

Why a Formal Market Selection Record Matters

Who Typically Prepares and Uses This Document

Teams that rely on structured market decisions complete this document to coordinate strategy, budget, and legal review.

  • Strategy and Product leaders — set selection criteria, score opportunities, and propose target markets (G2 sample: Real Estate shows 15 entries).
  • Sales and Business Development — validate market fit, territory planning, and pipeline assumptions (G2 sample: Finance/Banking 9 entries).
  • Legal and Compliance — confirm regulatory constraints and required disclosures before market entry (G2 sample: Healthcare 11 entries).

The document is also distributed to finance and executive stakeholders for approval and to central recordkeeping for auditability.
