What the Business Models Template Is and When to Use It

A Business Models Template is a structured document that captures a company’s value proposition, target customers, revenue streams, cost structure, distribution channels, and key resources. It standardizes assumptions and outputs so founders, managers, and advisors can compare scenarios, test pricing, and present consistent plans to stakeholders such as investors, lenders, and partners. The template can be used for internal planning, fundraising materials, or as an attachment to commercial agreements; it is often saved as a PDF or DOCX and routed for review and signature using an eSignature platform such as signNow.

Why a Standardized Business Models Template Matters

A consistent template reduces ambiguity, speeds decision making, and makes financial assumptions auditable across teams. It helps ensure stakeholders see the same inputs and outputs, improving transparency and reducing negotiation time.

Why a Standardized Business Models Template Matters

Who Typically Uses This Template

The Business Models Template is used by a range of organizations and roles during planning, fundraising, contracting, or internal forecasting.

  • Startups and founders preparing investor decks, term sheets, and diligence packages for seed and Series A funding.
  • Small and medium businesses creating go-to-market plans, pricing models, and internal budget controls for leadership review.
  • Consultants, advisors, and corporate development teams producing standardized analyses and comparables for client engagements or M&A work.

Use it when you need repeatable, signable business assumptions that support approvals, contracts, or investor review.

Core Sections to Include in a Professional Template

A professional Business Models Template groups information into discrete sections so reviewers can find assumptions, math, and narrative quickly; it should be concise, logically ordered, and ready for eSignature and version control.

Executive Summary

One-page overview that states the business idea, primary customer segments, and the core value proposition; include headline metrics and funding ask if relevant.

Revenue Model

Detail revenue streams (subscriptions, licensing, transaction fees), pricing tiers, billing cadence, and key assumptions used to project income.

Cost Structure

List fixed and variable costs, COGS, employee-related expenses, and assumptions for growth to produce month-by-month cashflow projections.

Customer Segments

Define target segments, buying triggers, unit economics (CAC, LTV), and expected conversion rates used in financial modeling.

Channels & Partners

Identify sales and distribution channels, partner revenue splits, and any channel costs or performance KPIs tied to projections.

Financial Projections

Include a three- to five-year P&L, cash flow, balance sheet summary, and scenario assumptions for conservative, base, and aggressive cases.

How to Complete the Business Models Template — Step by Step
