What a Business Opportunity Review Is and When It Applies

A Business Opportunity Review is a structured assessment used to document the terms, risks, and expected outcomes of a proposed commercial venture or partnership. It typically summarizes the parties involved, scope of the opportunity, financial assumptions, key milestones, compliance checkpoints, and recommended next steps. The document is used by internal decision makers, external partners, and legal or compliance teams to evaluate viability and to create a record that supports approvals, negotiations, and potential contract drafting. It can be completed as a standalone report or as an attachment to contracting or bidding workflows.

Why a Business Opportunity Review Matters for Governance and Risk

A Business Opportunity Review centralizes facts and assumptions, improves decision consistency, and creates an auditable record for compliance and financial planning purposes.

Why a Business Opportunity Review Matters for Governance and Risk

Typical Users and Stakeholders

Teams and roles that commonly prepare or review Business Opportunity Reviews include business development, finance, legal, and executive sponsors; the summary below outlines common participants.

  • Business Development managers who originate the opportunity and collect commercial inputs for evaluation.
  • Finance analysts who validate revenue, cost assumptions, and profitability metrics for approval.
  • Legal or compliance officers who check regulatory, IP, and contract boundary issues prior to negotiation.

Identifying the right reviewers early reduces rework and ensures the review addresses compliance, commercial, and operational concerns.

Core Sections to Include in a Professional Review

Stepwise Process to Complete and Approve the Review

Follow these steps to gather inputs, complete the review, and route it for approval in a controlled sequence.

  • 01
Gather Inputs: Collect commercial, financial, and legal inputs from stakeholders.
  • 02
Draft Review: Populate fields, attach supporting schedules and exhibits.
  • 03
Internal Validation: Ask finance and legal to verify assumptions and identify issues.
  • 04
Route for Approval: Send to approvers in defined order and capture signatory evidence.

Where to File, Send, and Store the Final Report

Decide the authoritative repository and routing path before finalizing the review to ensure consistent access and retention.

  • Primary Repository: Store final signed copies in the company document management system with metadata and version control.
  • Legal & Compliance: Send copies to legal and compliance teams for retention and audit purposes.
  • Finance Archive: Attach the review to financial forecasting and ERP records to support revenue recognition and audits.
  • External Share: Provide counterparty copies when required by negotiation or contract; track distribution list for transparency.
