What a Business Restart Letter Is and When It’s Used

A Business Restart Letter is a formal written notice that a company issues to announce the resumption of operations after a temporary closure, suspension, or interruption. It documents the restart date, scope of activities, safety or compliance measures, and any changes to hours, staffing, or service delivery. Organizations use this letter to notify employees, customers, vendors, regulators, and insurance carriers, and to create a dated record that can support operational, legal, or claims-related needs.

Why a Clear Restart Letter Matters

A concise Business Restart Letter reduces uncertainty, establishes the official resumption date, clarifies responsibilities, and preserves a contemporaneous record for regulatory, insurance, and contractual purposes.

Why a Clear Restart Letter Matters

Who typically prepares and receives a Business Restart Letter

Organizations across industries prepare restart letters to document resumption of operations and communicate required steps to stakeholders.

  • Company leadership and operations teams — issue formal restart notices and set effective dates.
  • Human resources and health & safety — communicate protocols and employee return-to-work requirements.
  • Vendors, customers, insurers, and regulatory bodies — receive notice so contracts, claims, and compliance obligations can be aligned.

Tailor recipients and content to your situation — internal teams, external partners, and any agency with regulatory oversight should be included as appropriate.
