What the Business Services Standard IO is and when it applies

A Business Services Standard IO (Insertion Order) is a standardized commercial agreement that records campaign or project instructions, pricing, deliverables, and billing terms between a buyer (advertiser or client) and a seller (publisher, agency, or vendor). It formalizes scope, start and end dates, creative specifications, targeting, reporting requirements, cancellation terms, and payment milestones. The IO functions as the operational contract that authorizes work and spend, and is often used alongside a master services agreement or statement of work to capture transactional details without redrafting core legal terms.

Why use a standardized IO for business services

A standard IO reduces ambiguity by centralizing key commercial terms in a predictable format, speeds review cycles with reusable fields, and creates a clear audit trail for approvals and billing while preserving any governing master agreement.

Why use a standardized IO for business services

Who typically prepares and signs a Business Services Standard IO

Final signature authority often rests with a delegated approver aligned to the contract value and the organization’s signature policy.

  • Media Buyers and Agencies: Prepare campaign specifications, targeting details, and delivery KPIs for vendor execution.
  • Vendors and Publishers: Confirm inventory, creative specs, placement schedules, and delivery guarantees before accepting.
  • Finance and Procurement: Validate PO numbers, billing terms, tax treatment, and approve the budget for invoicing.
